On Sunday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit for completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which would have come a half a mile south of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota. HOWEVER, Instead, the Corps said it would begin to explore alternative routes. While members of the tribe and its allies celebrated the decision, some worry that the victory may only be temporary, given President-elect Donald Trump’s support for the almost 1,200 mile-long pipeline. However, North Dakota’s governor, the company and members of the state’s congressional delegation all denounced the decision. Therefore, members of the tribe have said for many months that the pipeline would destroy sacred lands and were worried an oil leak could
Since July of 2016, there has been an extensive amount of tension between protesters and law enforcement over an oil pipeline near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The Dakota access pipeline is a 3.7 billion investment project that would carry 470,000 barrels of oil a day from the oil fields of western North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. The Dakota access pipeline is a stirring issue and is causing thousands protesters to camp out in rural North Dakota to protest for what they believe. The Dakota access pipeline is to be built by Texas energy transfer partners to move a massive amount of crude oil a day. This pipeline is 1,172 miles long, thirty inches in diameter. It will connect the expanding Bakken and Three Folks Production areas in North Dakota to Illinois. The pipeline will allow domestically produced oil from North Dakota to reach larger markets in a more direct, safer, and cost-effective manner. The issue with the pipeline is it would have to cross under the
The Keystone XL pipeline is a pipeline that runs from Canada to the United States. It would travel from Alberta to the southeast part of Texas next to the Gulf of Mexico, so petroleum products can be transported around the world. This great project would supply petroleum demands and create many jobs. The only thing needed for this project to take off in 2015 is for President Obama to approve it.
“In a few decades, the relationship between the environment, resources, and conflict may seem almost as obvious as the connection we see today between human rights, democracy, and peace (Nobel Peace Prize Medalist Maathai 2004).” A Canadian oil company that goes by TransCanada hopes to build an oil pipeline that would extend an enormous 1,200 miles onto an already gargantuan 2,600 mile long pipeline. Keystone XL represents just under a third of the entire Keystone project, and every other piece of pipe has been built and laid out. In fact, TransCanada 's pipeline system is already shipping hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil from the Canadian oil sands across the U.S. border -- and into Illinois (Diamond). The current proposal would take the pipeline on a journey all the way through to Texas. Extracting crude oil from oil sands would be enormously problematic for the environment as it causes the pumping of about 17% more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than standard crude oil extraction. Tar sand oil has levels of carbon dioxide emissions that are three to four times higher than those of conventional oil, due to more energy-intensive removal and refining processes (Friends of the Earth). The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline would stimulate employment, the effects would be temporary and the whole scheme would produce a negative long term outcome. The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline has caused
The Atlantic Coast Pipeline is a proposed natural gas pipeline that is planned to go through three states along the east coast; West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. The pipeline is claimed to create 19,440 jobs and provide clean reliable power to the residents within the borders of the three states. The pipeline seems to be beneficial in improving the livelihood of the residents of these states, however, the pipeline is also taking from the communities it is planned to go through. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline has created some controversy, among individuals especially when it comes to the equity of specific communities. Equity is the quality of being fair when it comes to making decisions.
Along with benefits and concerns, some organizations were engaged in active campaigns to stop the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline. Some of these organizations include Douglas Channel Watch (Kitimat), Friends of Wild Salmon and Prince Rupert Environmental from Grassroots organizations in northern B.C., Dogwood Initiative and Greenpeace Canada Foundation from Provincial and National NGOs, Carrier-Sekani Tribal Council, Office of the Wet’suwet’en, Coastal First Nations and Yinka Dene Alliance from First Nations organizations and The PipeDreams Project which is a kayak expedition along proposed tanker route and On The Line which is a self-propelled journey along the length of the proposed pipeline route from Awareness-raising Expeditions.
Hello I am Michelle Diaz currently a freshman at Mount Rainier High School and in my contemporary global issues class we have been learning about the issue of the Dakota Access Pipeline. I am writing to inform you about the issue with the pipeline that has been going on. Since December 2014 there has been an ongoing disagreement between the Energy Transfer Partners and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe (also including other native tribes). This disagreement is due to the fact that the oil companies are pushing to build an oil pipeline from North Dakota to Illinois making the pipeline stretch 1,172 miles. According to the oil company this project would decrease U.S reliance on foreign oil and create thousands of jobs for americans. Though this may be true the pipeline would also be crossing sacred sites that are culturally important to the natives and
The pending Keystone XL pipeline (KXL) project and legalization of recreational and medical marijuana are both government policy issues currently at the forefront of public awareness. The policy decisions over the past 10 or so years have led to ongoing debate and progress in these areas.
The Keystone Pipeline already exists and runs from “oil sand fields in Alberta, Canada into the US, ending in Cushing, Oklahoma” (What is the Keystone XL Pipeline?). The current topic concerning this pipeline is the expansion of the pipeline to create the Keystone XL Pipeline, which will consist of “1,700 new miles of pipeline” (What is the Keystone XL Pipeline?). This project would offer expansion from Cushing, Oklahoma to the Gulf Coast of Texas, “where oil refineries abound”, and expansion from Alberta to Kansas, allowing for the pipeline to “pass through a region where oil extraction is …booming” (What is the Keystone XL Pipeline?).
“No matter how high up you get, never forget where you came from.” is a quote relating to The Wife of His Youth by Charles W. Chesnutt. This quote shows that no matter how rich or famous one becomes they should never forget where they started in life with the people who were always there for them. The Wife of His Youth is set within the early 1890’s in Groveland, Ohio. During the time period in which the story is set, slavery was beginning to come to a halt, leaving many African-Americans to travel up North in search of a better and easier life. The story depicts the tragedies of slavery and the many hardships that African-Americans had to overcome; in the case of the story, those hardships were being separated from loved ones, arduous labor, and brutal treatment. It was also the end of the Civil War, which meant that many slaves were being freed and were given more rights, even though those rights were
Have you ever wondered how well Napoleon in “Animal Farm,” a novel by George Orwell relates to the real Joseph Stalin that he is meant to portray? To understand fully the relationship between the two we need to know a little about the background of the Russian revolution itself.
In North Dakota, oil is a great source of revenue. Since the oil boom, transporting that oil has been done through pipelines as well as rail cars. Recently, the Dakota Access pipeline has attracted attention from celebrities and other civilians that are not even residents of the Dakotas, such as Shailene Woodley, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, and Mark Ruffalo. Pipelines can be both efficient and dangerous. The efficiency can be read in the ability to transport the oil to other states, while the danger can be read in the environmental damage of an oil spill in a river that people depend on for water--in the case the Dakota Access pipeline could damage the Missouri River. No matter all the perks of a pipeline such as Dakota Access, it can be
In this article, the plan of a pipeline that is attempting construction is being rejected by those of Native American descent who live on the affected land. Their claim is that, since the pipeline is intended to cross the Missouri River near the Standing Rock reservation, the drinking water has an extremely high risk of becoming contaminated. Since the people living there depend on the river for a majority of their basic needs―such as drinking, fishing, and irrigation―it is an argument that a vast number of lives could be greatly affected. In order to prove a crucial point, thousands have moved indefinitely to a main protest camp called Oceti Sakowin. A community has been established here, where common societal things such a school and security system have been founded.
