Grief In The Odyssey

The Odyssey by Homer is an epic from Ancient Greece telling the tale of the great warrior Odysseus. It tells of Odysseus going to war and going through many trials to get back to his homeland, Ithaca. On Ithaca are his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus. Throughout the epic, Odysseus faces many challenges and trials in order to get home to his family, and even after he finally does arrive. Through all of the trials, each being extremely difficult, he pushes on to reach his family. This shows there are definitely bonds in the families. Of these, one that is apparent upon multiple occasions is the bond between father and son. Of course, the only father and son relationship isn’t just between Odysseus and Telemachus. There are many other examples of this family relationship, such as Poseidon and Polyphemus. But not only does the father and son relationship play a large role in the Odyssey. All family relations in general play a surprisingly large part in the Odyssey. Throughout the entirety of the story, family appears to be a great stimulus to persevere through the problem, no matter how challenging or fearful. One extreme example is of course is Odysseus. He traveled for 20 years fighting to return to his family, through unimaginable danger and the loss of roughly three crews. Family also appears to cause extreme retaliation and revenge. A superb example is how Poseidon reacts after Odysseus and his crew blind his son, Polyphemus. Another grand example is when Odysseus

John and I have trait similarities such as being sinners, hard-working human beings, and being proud of the things we do.

Many years after the end of the Trojan War, Odysseus still hasn’t returned home to Ithaka. Many believe that he is dead, but the author lets us know that he is being held as a sex captive on the goddess Kalypso’s island. Kalypso has no plans of letting him go to return home either.

Empathy is something that everyone feels or is in the need to say and show feelings towards someone, in homers odyssey some characters show empathy and sympathy in book 9.

In "The Odyssey" by homer and "An Ancient Gesture" by Edna St.Vincent Millay,the dipiction of grief is developed as a universal theme ,according to both of these texts,the characters experience feeling grief. They both use the same theme which is grief. Grief,survival,and hope are all themes the characters in both texts experience. In the odyssey,book eight,the character Odysseus is sad and determined to get home to his wife and Athena is also determined to help out.(from my notes)."Athena tells the princess in her dream to wash the clothes".

Many forms of popular culture today are inspired by themes, characters, and other references in various types of classical literature. John Denver's song 'Calypso'; is about the relationship between men and women, and he bases this comparison on the relationship between Kalypso and Odysseus in Homer's the Odyssey. In 'Calypso'; Denver portrays women in general as being superior to men by using the beautiful and enchanting goddess, Kalypso, from Homer's epic. John Denver encompasses all women in his song by providing Kalypso as a universal symbol. Along with the relationship between Odysseus and Kalypso and men and women, there are other interpreted allusions from the Odyssey to Kalypso's song.

Yes I do believe that Chaucer's intent was to capture life in all it's teeming glory. Chaucer's stories all describe times in the world when things were good. There was never a negative ending to any of the tales that he wrote. Inside his tales he makes it seem likes things are always going to end bad in some sort of way for reason, but chaucer usually makes every story have a happy ending for everyone.

A feeling of sorrow for someone else’s misfortune is considered sympathy. Sympathy makes writing more relatable and more intriguing to read. When you feel sympathetic towards a character, you are making an important connection with that character so that you will want to keep reading. This is one of the many ways that authors engross their readers when they are writing a story. In the Odyssey, we as readers feel sympathetic towards the Cyclops because of his countless misfortunes. Many of his misfortunes are caused by Odysseus but, due to the connection that we made in the beginning of the epic poem to Odysseus, readers still villainize the Cyclops a little bit. Archetypes of the Odyssey Ancient Greece was full of mystery. They told of mystical, almost supernatural, heroes and monsters. One such story told of a warrior named Odysseus. A king who ruled over the kingdom of Ithaca, but sadly left for war, leaving his family. Fighting for almost a decade, Odysseus set off on a long journey towards home. Through thick and thin, and through all of the bloodshed and fighting, he finally has a happy ending at home. What will he lose as a result? Odysseus is in the category of a hero, one of the many archetypes modern readers use to identify main characters and all other concepts in literature. Therefore, all heroes experience the fright and thrill of adventure in most of their tales.

The Odyssey is a a beautiful Epic about a man who has hope through his entire journey.When we see him on Calypso he has been to sea for a while, while he wants to go home he continues to go to her bed each night,however regrets it in the morning.One part about this journey that sticks out is why its taking so long.It wouldn't have taken this long is he didn't poke out Poseidon's son (Polyphemus) eye,which let to the Polyphemus praying that Odysseus does return home he just happens to return home alone through treacherous journey.This led to the twenty year journey.
