Some people give up. Some people don't. From radio interviews, to newspaper articles, to U.S. Department of Education documents, one learns that people who do not give up might have a quality called grit. Grit is important to a student's success in life, but maybe grit is something teachers can leave out of the curriculum. A person can use the results of the Grit Scale and the results of an IQ test and try to predict how successful someone will be in school, for example. Typically, one might think that the person with a high IQ will do better in school. After some study of this seemingly obvious notion, experts discovered that students who score high on the Grit Scale actually do better. The students at Riverdale Country School were from wealthy families. Many of them probably had high IQs. The students at David Levin's school that did not have money or advantages that come with wealth did learn about honesty, fairness, and bravery, yet they still failed in college. It does not matter if you have money or a high IQ. If you do not have grit, your chances for success are greatly diminished. Should grit be taught in school? While some people will naturally think that grit, being such a fantastic predictor of student success, should be taught in school, it should really just be promoted.
