GROUP COLLABORATION THESIS Most everyone knows how to work in a team but, not everyone comes from the same background or holds the same set of moral and ethical standards. Each person in a group has his or her own ideas about everything. When working in a group it seems that it is easy for a person to get lost in his or hers own task and forget about the group aspect of the project at hand. The article "Help Your Team Agree on how they'll Collaborate" gives the reader a solution to the group issue. The tool or advice that she gives is let the group agree on what the rules of conduct should be to help blend the group, thus making a smoother operating group with less conflict. The rules of conduct help the group know …show more content…
Whether that norm is something positive or negative within that group. Rules can be enforced by nonverbal actions like positive and negative attention from the leader of the group or other superiors. Integration seems to not be the only reason a group should adopt a universal set of rules, basically any time a group of people is brought together is a good reason. Coming up with this set of rules for the group to follow can be a long and exhausting process but there is a technique that can help this along. A method of using the nominal method of decision making would work best. Each individual person comes up with his or her set of rules, then as a group they review and pick the best top ten. After selecting the rules and the group becomes self-reliant after some time, or if the group backslides some, the group should come together and review the rules. At that point, they may adjust the rules to better fit the group as things and dynamics may have changed in the group. If there is a new team member he or she should be clued into the rules and allowed to give feedback. Theses suggestions can help a group work more efficiently together and become more …show more content…
The biggest thing that was emphasized was the group working together to come up with a set of rules that governs that group. When a team collectively comes up with its own rules and regulation there is less likely of a chance for conflict. If there is conflict the group potentially will be able to resolve it on its own. A method that is used is the nominal method of decision making. This means that each member comes to the meeting with his or her own set of rules and guidelines for the group. Each person reads the set of rules aloud, then as a group they vote on the top ten rules. Those top ten then are adopted by the group. It is important to periodically evaluate the rules, especially when and if the group back slides. This will help the group regain structure and focus on the task. I do not think that this approach will fit every group setting. I think that the process of setting ruled and guidelines for a group can be a lengthy process whether you do a pre-questionnaire or not. I think that the place where this can and will be the most effective is in a workplace where the employees are with the company for a long period of time. A place like Mc Donald's, where there
1.4 Explain why it is important to be clear about the purpose and desired outcomes for the group
Team norms are a set of rules or guidelines that a team establishes to shape the interaction of team members with each other and with employees who are external to the team. Team norms can be developed during an early team meeting. More norms can be added as the team sees the need for additional guidelines.
I like how you had stated that you had a negative understanding collaboration back when you were in school. I can agree, that I had similar negative experiences with collaboration and force collaborations felt like the group was paddling Upstream; although, the tasks were completed the effort that was needed it was exhausting. I found collaboration that is not forced and with individuals passionate about an end goals, seem to run smoothly, are fun and flow.
Throughout my co-op work terms, I was able to gain valuable skills that will be of use to your team. At Island Health Telehealth, I was able to calculate and report the Self Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) statistics with no previous knowledge on how this data was calculated and then presented my findings to my co-workers. Being able to quickly adapt to changing conditions was vital in all of my previous positions. At Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, things were always changing as the Clinical and Systems Transformation (CST) project went through various phases. The ability to prioritize tasks and complete them in a timely manner was a well-received trait. Throughout my schooling career I learned about various testing methods including,
Whether groups are formed for social or task oriented purposes, the ability to produce and maintain a sense of affiliation, peer support and collaboration is important for overall group functioning. The cohesion of a social group is produced through the establishment of a set of group norms, which are later defined as a guide for conduct accepted within a group of individuals. However, in order for a group to perform and produce results, the team leader should guide his/her team through the proper stages of group development, which includes the following steps: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. Although teams should follow all these stages of group development, the forming and the norming stages are the most important,
The group the facilitator will be observing is an anger management group that is held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Assurance of Hope Institute, Inc. The group consist of twelve men between the ages of twenty-five to forty-five. The group contains ten African American men and two Caucasian men. The group has been meeting three times a week for four months. The group is an open group that is available to all young adult men particularly those suffering from mental health illness. The clients whom attend the group have been either court mandated because of a violent encounter. The group discusses triggers that make one anger, ways to manage your anger, decrease overall intensity and frequency of angry feelings, increase ability to recognize and appropriately express feelings as they occur, identify situations, thoughts, feelings, that trigger anger, angry verbal and/ or behavioral actions and the targets of those actions. The facilitators of the group have explored family background and history to
Great post Jen! I like how you define inter professional collaboration. It made it easy to understand the discussion question better. As the definition from the World Health Organization implies, Health care workers come together to ensure the best possible outcome for patients and family members. The changing process requires an all-hands on deck approach as we learned some weeks ago. This is part of the reason why one of the important quality of the future nurse is teamwork and collaboration: Nurse of the Future competency (QSEN,
One of the group norms that had already been established through cohesiveness was the group’s respect for each other. When a member is speaking, they let the member finish without being interrupted. This showed respect for each other’s opinions. Each time a member spoke, they were brief and to the point. In return, members of the group would agree, agree to disagree, and in some cases built on each other’s ideas. Weatherhead
When developing a group the norms of the group can ultimately determine the therapeutic outcome for the group (Yalom, 2005). Norms are formed by the leader’s behavior and the group’s expectations (Yalom, 2005). The norms are the standard social behavior for the group. This would include acceptable behavior and typical conduct of the group members.
When the project was first introduced, I was not happy and thought that it was just going to be another boring project, but as we continued to work and I began to understand the project better, it became much more interesting and I ended up really enjoying the process. I was in the social sciences group and at first, my group and I thought it was going to be easy, but the more we worked and talked to other groups, the more complicated it started to become. We realized that there are lots and lots of pieces that must fit together to form a perfect society. We really struggled with the other groups because they all disagreed with us including mentally ill and none of the groups were very understanding about our needs. They all asked “why do we
For the teamwork activity, my group decide to stay together so that we can decide on the best order for the activity. My group started the activity by going from most to least important. In the beginning we decided to each voice what we thought was the most important material on the list. If we did not agree on the same thing, we went around the group and voiced why we believed that specific material is the most important. Then, we would vote and come to an agreement on the final choice. This method allowed us to stay organized and move on in a timely manner so that we could complete the activity in the limited amount of time we had.
Norms serve important purposes for the team by reducing the risk of conflict between team members, and preserving their values. A good strategy would be to bring in team members with appropriate values.
What rating would you give the team out of 10 (10 being the highest level of success)? What factors do you think contributed to the level of success your team achieved when success is defined as the creation of a resource that has authority and is user-friendly and the degree to which you worked effectively as a team. Provide specific examples from your experience to illustrate these factors.
Similar to Tuckman’s five stages of group development is Corey and Corey, they claim that the first stage; Pregroup is “setting expectations, establishing group rules and procedures, role preparation and skills building” (Corey, Corey, Corey 2010 p123). The group did well in this stage, as the group was given a very clear aim, we discussed each members skill sets and while preparing a group contract with our aims objectives and rules. A group contract is a very useful facilitation tool as it sets out very clear guidelines for the group and defines what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour for the group members (Tuckman 1965). The group members were able to gain clarity from the group contract, allowing them to identify the norms and boundaries of the group. For example our group decided that if a member were for any reason not be able to attend a meeting they would have to let the team know in advance, if this did happen the rest of the team would relay the information via email to the missing group member.
The type of group that I belong to is in charge of marketing ideas for my employer. As an active member of this particular group, we can be classified as a project team, which can be described as “work groups established for the duration of a specific assignment” (Shockley-Zalabak, 2015, pg. 190). The purpose of our meetings is to prepare marketing ideas and also come up with plans to help promote the company as a whole.
