Besides the behavioral approach, the most common approach I have performed is group counseling. Group counseling is when one counselor is working with multiple client’s with similar or different issues (Meier & Davis, 2011, p. 68). During group counseling, the clients are approached with how they are doing in their recovery process and what is helping. After the floor has been open to discussion, the clients talk amongst themselves about the changes they are making to assist with recovery or where they need improvement. When I see an opportunity to step in, I step in and ask a questions, however, during this time, I usually use my attentive listening skills and paraphrase. More importantly, throughout the group, the professionals and clients
There are various assessment tools obtainable for assessing the needs for patients or clients. The addiction professional uses assessment instruments as one component of the counseling/treatment process taking into account the client’s personal and cultural background. The assessment process promotes the well-being of individual clients or groups (NAADAC, 2015). This process helps determine how much and what kind of treatment your client needs. It is important to be aware of different types of assessments as well as being familiar with how they work in each situation. As we assess George we will use two different assessment tools to give as an example of how to assesss the needs of this client.
I learned two significant things about group counseling in this course. The first thing that I learned is the importance of setting up a treatment plan. The intention is to follow the client from their entrance into the program until the client is discharged. In this process the clients’ problems are identified through various assessments and as each problem is addressed, it is checked off of the list. Once all of the problems are checked off of the list, the client is considered as having completed the plan. This plan is especially important because it evokes thoughtful conversation between the client and the counselor and is the best method to gain information from the client regarding the help they want to receive. The second most significant thing that I learned about group counseling is how to design a group from start to finish. From pre group design, planning the goals of the group and determining the members to setting up the environment and structuring the sessions, each step adds its own important components to designing group counseling.

It is important for substance use disorders counselor to know what happens in support group because a member from the group might need additional support and the counselor can referral the member to individual therapy. According to SAMHSA “Counseling can be provided at the individual or group level. Individual counseling often focuses on reducing or stopping substance use, skill building, adherence to a recovery plan, and social, family, and professional/educational outcomes. Group counseling is often used in addition to individual counseling to provide social reinforcement for pursuit of recovery.” Therefore it is important to know what happens in support group to see if the client fits well in group or individual therapy. I chose the Key Simmeth Counseling Group because it uses a new psychotherapeutic method called EMDR therapy. The Key Simmeth Counseling Group provides therapy for anxiety, depression, anger management, counseling for teenagers, peak performance, and marriage and family. First, I tried to figure out what is the EMDR-therapy and what I found made me believe that this therapy may be beneficial for patients who suffer from PSTS. In 1987, the creator of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, psychologist Francine Shapiro discovered that the rhythmic movements of the eyes with the focusing on the target of traumatic memory lowers intensity of disturbing thoughts. One type of counseling group that would be one of my strengths, is psychoeducational group counseling. At the start of the session, the members are presented with an educational topic that portrays to drug and alcohol with the combination of counseling. An example would be an addiction facility exploring the information and research on relapse prevention. Usually, these types of meetings are conducted at inpatient drug and alcohol interventions and typically have an educational component to their meetings that help the clients learn more about their addiction and ways to stop (Brooks & McHenry, 2015). Why I believe this intervention is one of my strengths is due to enjoying teaching and talking amongst others about the education on abuse and
As I began the Group Process and Dynamics course, I was excited to become educated and experienced with group counseling. Group counseling is a topic I have enjoyed in the past and have continued to be fascinated by. I have learned the elements of a group process through observation and research. The group process consists of several elements that come together when the group begins and ends when the group is terminated. I have observed group norms, group cohesion, the generation of trust, the manifestation of resistance, the emergence of conflict and resolution, healing forces, the reactions of group members, and the various stages a group develops through (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2010). Throughout this course, I was able to derive a conceptualization of groups. From this course I will take with me the understanding of how effective group counseling can be for individuals. Groups have been known to be as effective as individual therapy and a great source of treatment. Group counseling is designed as a part of a treatment plan that helps individuals and guide them through change. Group counseling is a versatile practice, which can be used in several settings and with different populations (Corey et al., 2010). This course has given me the opportunity to reflect on my own personal leadership style, the challenges that may arise, and an action plan to continue my group leadership knowledge and skills.

Group counseling may be adverted to as a course of counseling, which takes a group of people coming together under one or more trained therapists, who simultaneously facilitate them and promote them to help one another to overcome their challenges. The group members are usually peers who may not necessarily face the same problem, but their problems may be linked. According to Jacobs, Masson, Harvill and Schimmel (2012), all members in a counseling group wish and desire personal growth. This kind of therapy has been employed over the years and it has produced excellent results in the lives of the group members.
Being a student within the counseling program is a major push forward when expressing my feeling. With that fear, comes the idea(s) of being open with other individuals, which may or may not criticize my views, opinion, choices, lifestyle, and perspective of a situation.
