To begin with, understanding the terminology of group therapy an influential factor when forming any group setting. Next, the professional should understand the concept of an open or closed group setting, in a therapeutic setting. It’s important to assure and educate each client on how to reach and maintain recovery, prevent future relapse or instill tranquility into one's life.

Also, closed groups are short in length, however, members are expected to maintain the guidelines and procedures, within the group and remain the group up until their completion date. Equally important, new members are seldom interjected into a closed group due to the dynamics of the group setting. The guidelines of a closed group and the responsibility of the client is associate themselves with cohesion, attendance, self -disclosure, role preparation, skill building, most importantly, follow the rules and regulations of a closed group setting. However, the responsibility of the group facilitator is to maintain cohesion in a closed group setting and bring people together with the same common issues, however with different outcomes for treatment, based upon the individual diagnosis. Furthermore, embers in an open group setting may share other issues unfitting, to the group as the whole. Most importantly, individuals with comorbid disorders are eft untreated without directions or availability to be treated accordingly by a licensed professional. By the same token, closed groups are just as stated closed from the beginning to the end, so that the group functions cohesively with individuals, experiencing some the same trial and tribulations, unless priority is necessary to interject at that moment.
