Growth of the Two Protagonists in Hornby's Novel, About A Boy

Nick Hornbys’ novel ‘About a boy’ is a tale of two people growing up in two very different ways. Throughout the novel both the protagonists lead a change of self, which is a direct result of the actions of each other. Essentially both the protagonists allow each other to take a look at the world from a different perspective. The journey that the two characters experience in growing up is alike that of our own growing up, in that we have experiences that allow us to mature and become someone who is accepted by society. Although at this point Will still has his shallow values, he has finally let someone into his ‘private island’ and into his life. Such a change from a secluded life is hard for anyone. Moving out of your comfort zone and into a new environment such as changing schools or moving house is something that we all experience within our lives. By making a change and moving out of comfort zones we become better people and as Will did we open up a new world of potential development.

Marcus’ development throughout the novel is quite extreme. His initial lifestyle is bland, he is a social misfit and he lives under the influence of his mother. From the opening pages we get an indication of the type of child Marcus is, he likes Joni Mitchell and is a vegetarian, features not commonly attributed to someone of his age. Marcus’s interactions with Will in the book help develop Marcus into someone who is socially cohesive with people his own age. As Marcus’ relationship with Will is established a new side of Marcus comes to light. The usually quiet and reserved Marcus that Hornby brings us to know becomes intrusive and attacking in the way that he interacts with Will.
