At the base of McCalla Hill, hidden among one of the newly rediscovered Morale, Welfare & Recreation’s Wi-Fi spots, resides one of U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba’s best kept secrets: the MWR Ceramics Shop.
Here is a place where Joint Task Force Guantanamo Troopers can relax, unwind and explore their creative side as an outlet for the stress and anxiety from a long week at work. On this Friday night, (need actual date.. can’t say day of week) a small class of five students gathered to learn ceramic molding, many of them starting projects intended for use as one of a kind Christmas gifts or personal souvenirs.
“It’s incredibly important to afford Troopers opportunities to blow off steam,” said a Trooper assigned to the Joint Detention Group. “Considering the

“The Navy is very generous in providing us with a lot of activities and everyone should take advantage of the opportunities.” Putting things into perspective, the Trooper pointed out that only a small portion of the military will ever be deployed to Guantanamo, making the deployment here not just special but potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“You don’t really know when you are going to be here,” said the Trooper. “Especially considering the current political climate in the U.S., so the opportunity to make something and take it home with you and have it for a long time, it’s a pretty nice opportunity.”
The ability to make personal souvenirs on deployment is uncommon and an option Troopers should take advantage of.
“If you can make the time to visit the pottery shop two or three times a month, it is well worth the investment,” said a Trooper. “If you can make some time for yourself in a 24/7 operation, it’s important to get out and explore new
Ceramics is one of my true passions. It began when I was very young and continued through a 5-week summer program at Choate in 2016, and now at Fay as my favored art class. At Choate, I advanced significantly in ceramics, learning and developing new clay and glazing techniques. One of the methods I created was a marbling technique which impressed my fellow students and was used by upper classmates for the rest of the summer. In my present ceramics class at Fay, I have worked hard on hand building pieces, whistles, and using slabs to create boxes, vases, and tea sets. I am hoping to get onto the Varsity Art team next year. Varsity Art is a ninth grade art class where advanced art students are placed together to work and learn new techniques. The class focuses on sketching, painting, sculpting and painting.
Guantanamo Bay in Cuba houses some of the most dangerous people. The people being held have ranged in committing various crimes. What makes Guantanamo Bay well known is how the time period a detainee has spent in prison without a trial. While in prison for an extensive period of time, a detainee is bound to receive discipline for not following the guards. There are often a variety of different methods that the guards use to teach discipline to the detainees. All who follow Guantanamo Bay as institution often criticizes the measures taken. What makes Guantanamo Bay an ironic place to start this journey is because Guantanamo Bay is at the center of attention to a very important, controversial law passed in 2006. The controversial law was
Kohlberg’s morality theory defines various levels and stages where a person’s morality can be tested on a scale. Reviewing the Stanford prison experiment and the Abu Ghraib prison was interesting. The guards in the Stanford prison experiment reacted differently than each other and showed different levels of morality. In the Abu Ghraib prison, the guards were put in a real life situation where the morals were tested. It was fascinating to see how the two different scenarios had similar behaviors.
“The day I was wounded, I certainly didn’t start out thinking I should kick in a door and engage practically hand-to-hand with the enemy. However as I was with my Marines going street by street and house by house, upon learning that wounded Marines were trapped inside a building with terrorists, I knew every second counted.”

The US Navy has founded its self with being an organization that will train and activate skilled combat naval personnel. The official mission statement taken off their web site states, “The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.” (http://www.navy.com) The Navy also prides itself on the adventurous spirit it takes to embark on a career in the navy. The slogan used in getting new recruits is “Accelerate your life“. These statements suggest that the Navy is not only clear in its purpose and design, but also dedicated to its end. The clarity of its mission is seen in the
Guantanamo Bay is a U.S. Military maximum security prison that is considered a detainee camp for unlawful enemy combatants. Guantanamo has become a worldwide focal point because of the reports of abuse, torture and the prolonged trials for detainees and its closure and release of its detainees has been called for by many. World leaders, media outlets and humanitarian organizations have requested the closure and release of these detention facilities and their detainees, but it remains vital that these detainees are tried and receive fair punishment for their acts of terrorism.
As Nelson Mandela once said, “To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.” Guantánamo bay, Cuba is the home of the oldest U.S naval station base out of the continental U.S. The United States invaded Guantánamo bay and established a base during the Spanish-American war (“Guantanamo...” 2008, par. 2). After the attack on the twin towers on September 11, 2001, the base’s mission expanded to include the Detainee Mission of the War of Terror (“Guantanamo…” 2008, par. 5). Many issues have risen because of this detention facility. The detainees held at the facility have to and had to face many challenges. The government took away their human rights and treats these detainees very harshly. Currently, there are still detainees held at Guantánamo bay. However, some actions have occurred to stop these inhumane actions, but there have not been enough to close the facility down.
Imagine a prisoner waking up one night. The guards shout and yell for them to get up and form rank with the other prisoners. Then, the guards simply tell the prisoners to march in the cold and unforgiving snow. They do this having no idea of where the journey will take them or how long it will be. This is was the reality for many of the prisoners that remained in the concentration camps.
hijackings significantly reduced the use of this method. The change in the use of aircraft as a bargaining tool to an actual weapon was marked with the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Imagine a solitary island, where sharks swarm the bay and prisoners loathe the fact they are stuck at “The Rock.” The prison, Alcatraz, is located a mile of the San Fransisco bay. Built in the 1860’s, and then taken over in 1934, Alcatraz was used as the most dreaded and feared prison in America. “The Rock” was used for hardened criminals, the ones who committed the greatest crimes. On the night of June 11, 1962, Frank Morris, John, and Clarence Anglin have been chipping away at the walls of their prison cells, hoping to escape their dreaded home. After they escaped, they were never seen or heard from again. Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers died trying to escape Alcatraz.
The Guantanamo Bay Plant Nursery is a facility on the island that works to save and grow native plants. Located along the main road, it is easily accessible by foot, bike, car or city bus. Before you enter the nursery, the first thing you see if a compost bin where locals can donate their food scraps to be turned into compost and later returned to the community for gardening. Upon entering the garden, your eyes are met with a wide variety of bright and blooming plants, bushes and flowers. In between each plant bed, are connected PVC pipes that transport water to each section on a timer, as needed for watering. Near the back of the property is a small building and toolshed, from which the rain gutters are directed into many large buckets; this
As a transfer student to this University I had the pleasure of prior experience with ceramics, the medium I hold dear and near to my heart. Yet, it wasn’t until I came to Southern that I realized the true potential of this craft, for I had only ever thought of ceramics in its application of functional wares. Over the course of my studies here at the University of Southern Mississippi I have branched out and away from potting and into the world of Fine Art. It is here that I have been developing my skills in both the ceramics and sculpture areas. Within each I created bodies of work disassociated from one another in an attempt to separate my courses. However, it was through pushy professors from both courses of study that I have been able to reach the level of craftsmanship and concept found in my senior show.
After reading about Early Asian Art and the Art of the Americas, I chose to write about the Terracotta Army and the Colossal Heads. The Terracotta Army is an underground army with 8,000 soldiers and 100 horses made out of clay. The warriors was very appealing to me, because there are thousands of life size warriors and it is amazing how each warrior face and expression differ from one another. The soldiers are utilitarian because they were made to protect Shi Huangdi throughout eternity. The process of making the soldiers involved 1,000 skillful potters, who molded and carved the clay. The legs, torsos, fingers, arms and heads of the soldiers were molded and then carved into the figures. After the clay was fired, the warriors were painted
