Imagine sitting at home watching tv late at night and someone tries to break and enter. There is a self defence handgun in a bedroom close by. Once the criminal sees the gun they flee the scene and everyone is safe. That is why the second amendment needs to be preserved. The second amendment needs to be preserved because it will prevent crime, make people feel safer, and gun control does not prevent homicides or accidental gun deaths.
Gun control does not prevent homicide. A relatively small amount of people are killed by guns more killed by traffic accidents, heart disease, and even the flu. From 1980 to 2009 a ban on assault rifles did not affect the homicide rate at a state level in the United States. In fact Mexico, one of the strictest countries on gun control, has a rate of 9.97 gun related homicides per 100,000 people while the United States has a rate of 2.97(UNODC). Actually guns count for a mere 1.3% of all deaths internationally(Small Arms Survey). That includes all accidental deaths as well as homicides. The United States is ranked number 28 International for total number of homicides per 100,000 people. If you count only gun related homicides the United States was ranked number 59 In 2015(Small Arms Survey). In the United States guns are ranked as the only the 12 cause of death with a total of 533,879 deaths between 1990 and 2015(procon.org). The leading cause of death now is heart disease(cdc).
Crime cannot be prevented by gun control. Criminals can steal firearms, use a fake ID, or illegally manufacture firearms. A criminal can easily work around a background check if they don’t have a serious offense on their record. Also states with a higher gun ownership rate have a lower violent crime rate. On average when states makes stricter conceal and carry laws they see a spike of 10% in violent crimes(proton.org). Owning a gun is a deterrent for criminals, because when a criminal knows that many people in an area own firearms they are less likely to try to break entry in that area.
Made people think that mandatory safety laws need to be enforced but safety classes would be more beneficial. Safety classes are more beneficial because when someone is forced to do something they are less likely to embrace
While mass shootings cause a huge unnecessary loss of life, most killings in the United States come from murders and crimes. Guns should be banned to lower crime rates. Because “more than 70% of homicides are committed with a firearm” (Cannon n.p.) and 2.
In today’s society the majority of the crimes are still being committed by people who have possessed a firearm that has been obtained illegally or without proper permits. That being said there has been a strong push for gun control because of the rise of shootings involving a large group of people such as the Columbine massacre, Virginia Tech shooting and latest Aurora movie theater shooting involving people who have purchased firearms legally. Gun control laws in the United States have been established for many years but to maintain a civilized society with limited crime stronger control laws need to be enforced in which will help reduce crime in our country. Establishing stronger gun control laws will educate
If gun control is regulated, then we will have less crime. Access to firearms makes killing easy, efficient, and impersonal, which increases the lethality of crime. Josh Sugarmann, the Executive Director of the Violence Policy Center has once said, "We recoil in horror and search for explanations, but we never face up to the obvious preventive measure: a ban on the handy killing machines that make crimes so easy.”Allowing untrained people to carry guns puts others at risk and it can result in self-inflicting injuries both by suicide and unintentional incidents. Gun violence in America kills more than 30,000 and injures almost 70,000 each year. Guns can be misused and abused, which is why gun
Mass shootings are increasing in the United States, and gun control advocates are seizing the opportunity to push anti-gun legislation to deter gun violence in America. Guns and the Second Amendment have come to the forefront of political rhetoric, leading to conflicting views between lawmakers on the future of gun legislation. Republican lawmakers are encouraging law abiding citizens to acquire firearms and to defend themselves against acts of violence by criminals. On the contrary, Democratic lawmakers believe the only way to slow gun violence in the United States is to remove guns from society. While certain politicians believe strict gun laws would protect the American people, the proposed policies would make our nation more vulnerable
In the Second Amendment, it gives people the right to bear firearms. This means that most people can own a gun legally and use it how they want. Some can use them for hunting, target practice, defense, or for a collection. As of now most people can go to a gun store, maybe pass a background check, fill out some papers, and come back with a weapon. If you buy it elsewhere, you might not have to pass or sign anything.
Using this definition, a 2016 study published in the journal Violence and Victims reported that 292 mass shooting incidents took place worldwide between 1966 and 2012; nearly one-third of these were in the United States.”(DiLascio, 2017). The statistics are the answer to whether or not limiting firearms in The United States will help in the overall goal of limiting firearm violence. Other Countries such as England and Japan have more regulations on firearms and it limits the firearm related murders in those Countries. “Have some of the tightest gun control measures in the world, also feature some of the world’s lowest gun homicide rates (per 100,000 people, 0.04 killings and 0.03, respectively). The United States, by contrast, has a rate of 3.42 gun murders per 100,000 people-100 times greater than England or Japan” (Ballaro, 2016). Over the years gun crime has decreased a lot. “ Although gun crime declined steadily throughout the 1990s and early 2000s-thanks in part, perhaps, to the assault weapons ban still in force at the time-it increased sharply in 2005 and has been on a steady rise since. In 2008, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan group of 300 US mayors, found that homicides from handguns were highest in states with the most lenient gun laws” (Ballaro,
The majority of anti-gun advocates voice their opinion that more guns would produce more crimes unfortunately for them there is little to no truth in that claim. In reality, when gun ownership increased the amount of murders diminished as well. When states passed concealed weapons laws there was significant drops in the number of multiple victim shootings occurring, the number of deaths, and the number of injuries at these shootings. In 1997 both Wales and England banned handguns and the instantaneous effect was a 50% increase according to crime research. They never saw a day lower than after the year they decided to ban handguns. It has been proven by many surveys that the banning of guns increases crime rate which in turn proves that gun control is not the answer.
The United States of America is one of the very few countries in the world that allows their citizens to bear arms. The right to bear arms traces back all the way to the times of the 13 colonies. The Second Amendment has been up for many debates, especially in the recent light of mass shootings in the US. But does the entire removal and ban of firearms really work? Gun control and the second amendment has been a never ending conflict between politicians. As we look further into gun control there are more draw backs for the citizens than benefits.
The United States Constitution was constructed from a set of rules, also known as amendments. These were written with the intention of securing the basic rights of all United States citizens. It usually serves as an outline for the laws of the land by dictating the powers of the people and what is acceptable under the watch of the United States government. The history behind these amendments began in 1789 when it was proposed and drafted by James Madison. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as part of the first ten amendments contained in the Bill of Rights. (History.com Staff 2009)
President Barack Obama says we have an “obligation” to try anything that could save one child, but many people find this statement to be ridiculous. Gun control is thought of as a government policy or regulations to control or limit the sale and use of firearms. In the U.S. constitution, the 2nd Amendment states that a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. Inside America today, gun control is a major issue, especially in the political arena. People debate on the daily that not all things in society make it a safer place to live. The best intentions of America’s lawmakers often do not achieve the desired outcome; therefore, the nation
Guns have been around for a very long time. People love being able to have the freedom to do what they want, especially when they can possess something that make them feel superior. The introduction of the Second Amendment opens up the controversial, yet well anticipated opportunity for United State citizens to be able to own guns. Americans enjoy the benefit of being able to own guns for decades over people in other countries. People can buy guns and carry them around in public. They own guns for many reasons such as to hunt, to protect themselves, and simply to satisfy their desire of owning a gun, but in recent years, the issue of people carry guns has become a problem. There are so many people get killed by guns in different parts of
The second amendment has always been deeply rooted in the American culture and constitution. The amendment states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Being able to protect ourselves, gives us Americans a peace of mind, but now-a-days people are thinking otherwise. Being able to access a firearm so easily without a thorough deep background/mental health check is un-nerving. In the last two decades there has been roughly 200 mass shootings. All it takes to buy a firearm, like a shotgun simply requires your driver 's license and a couple pages of paperwork from the 4473 form. I am here to discuss Gun control in America through our 3 levels of representation, Federal, State, and City.
Most countries in the world allow civilians to purchase firearms subject to certain restrictions. Under second amendment united states also give permit to every civilian that they can keep and bear arms for their self defense. The intention behind second amendment was self defense but in past couple of year it works totally opposite than intention. One report indicate that more number of people killed in mass shooting than number of people killed in terrorist attack. These numbers are enough to warning us that how all of us are moving toward big threat. However many people think that ban on firearm is not permanent solution for decrease crime rate. Criminals who doesn’t care about laws and rules regulation can easily get gun illegally and at that time person who don’t have gun be a easy target for them.
Gun control does not help prevent homicides. A relatively small amount of people are killed by guns more are killed by traffic accidents, heart disease, and even influenza (CDC). From 1980 to 2009 a ban on assault rifles did not affect the homicide rate at a state level in the United States. "States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes... The effect on 'shall-issue' [concealed gun] laws on these crimes [where two or more people were killed] has been dramatic. When states passed these laws, the number of multiple-victim shootings declined by 84 percent. Deaths from these shootings plummeted on average by 90 percent and injuries by 82 percent," was commented by Phd author, John R. Lott, Jr., in his book More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws. In fact, Mexico, one of the strictest countries on gun control, has a rate of 9.97 gun related homicides per 100,000 people
Tragedy struck a small town in south-east Texas on Sunday, November 5, 2017. The shooter, Devin Patrick Kelley was a former member of the United States Air Force from 2009 until 2014. It is reported that the motive behind this disgusting act was a quarrel with his ex-mother-in-law. Kelley took the lives of 26 people that Sunday morning: ten women, seven men, seven girls, one boy, and an unborn child.
