Author Thomas Sowell makes a case for the opposition of gun control throughout his article entitled “The Great Gun Control Fallacy.” In the face of the countless shootings that seem to dominate the news constantly, Sowell argues that there is no greater threat to the safety of the masses than the removal of guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens. The piece delves into many different aspects and ideas on the argument, but perhaps most importantly, it discusses statistics and data about high crime rates in areas with a large amount of gun control, addresses and rebukes a counterargument that the opposing side might use, and closes with a thought provoking statement on whether or not guns or people are the real problem in today’s

For many years, people have been pushing the American government to implement new laws that deal with gun control. Supporters of the argument claim that increased gun control will drastically reduce the crime rate in America. Nevertheless, a majority of gun control arguments are formed from strict control of data and emotional appeal. The mainstream media picks up these stories and broadcasts them to viewers without providing any context to them. While gun control activists assert that gun control is necessary, the American government should not ban guns because of the following reasons: potential vulnerability of innocent people being shot at by criminals and the inability for people to defend themselves against their own government.

Throughout this paper I will be challenging the arguments of Jeff McMahan’s paper Why Gun ‘Control Is Not Enough where he concludes that the only effective form of gun ‘control’ would be for The United States to make it illegal to shoot a gun of any type. Gun control laws should regulate production, distribution, ownership and use of firearms by civilians. Gun control laws are not intended to dispossess law abiding citizens of licensed firearms but to intervene on reckless use of firearms that cause harm to the public. Gun control should also make it difficult for criminals to access firearms. Armed civilians have in many instances deterred acts of crime from being instigated by scaring away criminals. Nonetheless, gun laws can only be described as immensely lax. This essay seeks to argue for the enactment of strict gun control laws by highlighting the dangers posed by guns in the hands of members of the public.

The debate of whether or not the government should ban the sell of guns, and attempt to remove all guns in existence has been debated for a long period of time; I believe that banning guns is not only implausible, it will do more harm than good. In this essay, I’ll be discussing the history of this debate, as well as discuss some misinformation that’s been proposed by those wishing to ban guns. I’ll also discuss how guns do not turn ordinary, law abiding citizens into killers, and how owning guns can effectively help protect yourself, your family, and your home while decreasing casualties and crime.

Former Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer once said "Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror". Spitzer’s words makes one think: should we fear the person behind the gun or the gun itself? The majority of violent crimes that happen in America are not only caused by a criminal, but also the weapon in which the criminal is holding. America’s gun violence problem stems from the increasing accessibility of firearms. Many of the mass shootings in America could have been prevented if access to semi-automatic and automatic weapons were completely banned. Gun violence is an arising issue, and a change needs to be made concerning the gun laws in the U.S. Stricter gun control laws is necessary to prevent high accessibility to firearms and mass shootings, also research shows that Australia’s strict gun control laws are proven to be more efficient in preventing gun violence.

The fight over gun control in America has been an open-ended, heavily argued and very controversial issue in U.S. government for years. Although the pro-gun argument is reasonable, it treads a fine line of violating American individuals second amendment right to bear arms. Pro-gun government believes that stricter gun control laws will decrease the number of violent crimes committed in America, as well as prevent the access of guns to criminals and those who intend to do harm with them (Kleck, G., 2009). There is no solid proof that has been presented that offers substantial evidence that stricter gun control laws will have any significant impact or decrease on crime in America.
