In the wake of all the school shootings in the past fifteen years gun control has become a more serious issue than before. Gun control has always been a concern in the United States, but not until the first major school shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado did this topic become a reality to the American public. In 1999, this massacre left fifteen people dead including the assassins. And just recently on March 5, 2001 did the tradition continue, when Charles Andrew Williams killed two classmates, leaving many injured in Santee California.
School shootings has become a very popular topic in the arguments for gun control. Gun control laws focus on making guns more difficult to obtain, as

The NRA supported the election of out current president, George W. Bush who according to the NRA follows the standard gun owner’s line. Which are harsher penalties against “gun-toting” criminals, but no more regulations for worthy citizens who take guns seriously (NRA). The Republicans feel that law-abiding citizens should have the right to their protection against criminals. This is the Republican’s point of view, make the consequences harsh and the number of violations will go down.
The Democratic Party has pledged their faith in the concept of gun control. The Democratic Party has support from law enforcement and such organizations as the Million Mom March for gun control. They feel that more laws restrict people from using their weapons in a harmful manner. They feel that tighter laws are needed and an increase in penalties (Phinney). They feel that gun companies should not be spared from liability lawsuits, and feel that guns should not be apparent in society (Smith 7). After the shooting of six year old Kayla Rolland, by her classmate, Bill Clinton called for a “summit meeting”, of Congressional leaders to discuss tighter gun control laws (Naghton, Evan, and Flint). This is the Democrat’s point of view, fix it before it is a problem.
I am personally against gun control, I think that I should have the right to own a gun for my protection. I will always be afraid
Gun control is a vital necessity to the welfare of our nation. Many people out there are supporting the “anti- gun control cause” with the excuse of “self-defense”. I believe that not everyone will handle a gun for self-defense. The possession of a gun is a sign of power. One of the bigger ambitions that one has is to have power and the easier it is to obtain a gun; the faster a criminal will gain power over an innocent person. When one is in possession of a gun, that person has complete control of their actions and may act upon the weapon however the person may please even if they know that their action will cause harm to defense-less people. There are many deaths caused by guns out there that could
The Republican Party is extremely supportive of all the laws for less gun control while the Democrats want more gun control. The Republicans have always been advocates of less gun control because of their belief in the Second Amendment. I believe the following quote from “Republican Views on Gun Control” (2013) sums up their ideology on the subject: “The GOP (“Grand Old Party”) is keen to point out that the Republican position on gun rights does not flow from a fondness for weapons, but from a fundamental principle that calls for upholding certain rights that the nation was built upon. Republicans believe that governmental regulation of firearms is largely unconstitutional and therefore, most gun laws are an infringement on the individual’s rights to bear arms. The dominant point made by Republicans in this regard is that the Second Amendment gives the right to the individual to protect himself, his family, and his property.” While I agree with the right to protect oneself and his or her family, I would have to side with the Democrats’ stance on gun control. I think people should be able to bear arms but not every single weapon needs to be in reach. For example, according to Republican Views (2013), in 1993, Bill Clinton passed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which banned the manufacture of semi-automatic firearms that were defined as assault weapons for civilian use. I completely agree with this law because there is simply no need for an average civilian to own an assault rifle especially now days. Assault rifles over the last two decades have gotten lighter and more powerful, and there is simply no need to them to be in the hands of inexperienced people. People worrying about protecting themselves and their property can still purchase sniper rifles, shotguns, and pistols, which do the job perfectly well. Along with protection, people also like to use guns for hunting, and a
Sandy Hook Elementary. Aurora, Colorado. San Bernardino, California. Las Vegas, Nevada. Orlando, Florida. (Words with Negative Connotation) These are just some of the biggest mass shootings that have swept America in the past few years. Hundreds of lives are lost each year to gun related violence in the United States alone. Gun control has been a topic in our country since our founding fathers adopted the second amendment to the US constitution. Although recently controversy has sparked to an all-new extent in America due to the recent spike in mass shootings and gun related homicides. So many families and loves ones are affected each year in the United States because of gun related violence and other mass killing events, because of these events gun control laws need to be revamped and strengthened in American in order to protect the citizens.
One argument in favor of the claim more gun control laws being put into play, is so that more incidents like Sandy Hook will be less likely to occur. More specifically, it will lower the chances of a criminal or someone who is not in their right state of mind to get their hands on a gun. For example, let’s say an individual who is diagnosed with a mental
Many people think that gun control laws pushed by the Democratic Party will help reduce the amount of guns bought, this a very big misconception. The gun laws that are in effect now require a background check and age requirement, but according to Junior Scholastic there are,”major holes in it. Perhaps the biggest is that many small-scale sellers, who claim to be "hobbyists," aren't required to conduct background checks” this example shows that nearly anyone can buy a gun and do not have to have a background check. Another reason why gun control does not work is that,”A criminal could also resort to a method other than a firearm”(NRA). Before this great country was created men used swords, axes, daggers, bows and many other types of weapons to inflict terror, murder, and other horrid acts. The guns and other weapons are not what kill
For example, in 1999 thirteen people, including a teacher, were murdered at Columbine High School. Nine years later tragedy struck again at Virginia Tech University where 32 people were gunned down including five staff members. Most recently, a gunman killed 20 innocent elementary students along with six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut (Rostron 439-440). LSUA cannot be the next school to be added to this list. Schools are supposed to be a safe place for everyone and not a high risk danger zone. These school shootings have sparked debates whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry guns in schools to protect themselves, as well as students (Rostron 440). Although guns can do bad things, they can do good things like saving lives. National Rifle Association Vice President Wayne LaPierrce says “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Rostron 441-442). Politicians and the media want us to believe that more harm is done with guns than good and make us believe it’s the gun’s fault it killed someone, not the person who shot then gun (Rostron 454). My solution to fix LSUA’s small amount of security around campus and the
There also have been many debates whether the laws to regulate gun control should be enhanced or not. There is no right or wrong answer to this open-ended question because of the fact that people could use the second amendment to their advantage, or they could use the fact that many people have died because of these shootings. There also have been multiple court cases on whether gun control should be enhanced. The case on Nikolas Cruz is an example because there are two logical sides to argue on. The first side shows that the 2nd amendment protects his right to have a gun, and the reason he created a school shooting is that he has a mental
Throughout the election Hillary Clinton has stressed that guns are the reason people are being killed and that they need to be taken away. Many people are upset about this because when our country was founded our founding fathers wanted to make sure that we had the right to bear arms. In order to make that happen they created the second amendment. Taking away citizens guns would be an infringement on their constitutional right and could have severe consequences. The National Rifle Association has been creating advertisements to show why taking away citizens guns can result in people being harmed simply because they didn't have the means to protect themselves. In their ad “Don’t Let Hillary Leave you Defenseless.” the National Rifle Association
Democrats believe citizens are already being protected by law enforcement (police officers, local military bases, national guard) and don’t believe that people should have the rights to carry a firearm. The reasoning of why there is a disagreement is because in the Constitution, the second amendment states that “each person shall have the right to keep and bear arms” (excerpt from US Constitution) and the general Democratic point of view of guns violates that amendment (there may be a Democrat that disagrees in that belief). Democrats also believe that gun shows are “loopholes” or an escape clause for using guns. According to a Gun Violence Archive, 36 Americans each day are killing unintentionally with guns. 50% of law enforcement officers are killed with guns that are not their own, which is intentional by another person in the years of 1980-2014 according to FBI Leoka and many Press clips. Some Republican or Green Party members agree to this when it comes to owning a Pistol, M16, or anything in that family of
The article I choose first explains/summarizes the Las Vegas shooting committed by Stephen Paddock to show that there is gun violence. As well as saying that starting in 1934 some rules have been set for gun control by congress, but by 1994 the want for gun control has lowered. The author talks about a bill that Republicans actually support that would ban bump stock, but this wouldn’t bring down gun violence at all. Another big problem with gun control is background checks and the mentally ill being able to easily get guns because of the flawed checks. A problem gun advocates and those against would support is having stronger background checks, 84% of Americans support this. 138 new gun laws have been put into place in 42 states ever since
In recent years, there has been an emphasis on how we, as a nation, should handle gun violence. Republicans tend to support “limited gun control” (us-political-parties.insidegov.com). In addition, they offer “strong support of the Second Amendment” (us-political-parties.insidegov.com). However, Democrats believe in “strict gun control” (us-political-parties.insidegov.com). It is also common for Democrats to oppose conceal and carry
Over time politicians are always looking for new things to make laws about and regulate. This is no different with guns. Overall the democratic party tends to be in favor of stricter gun laws, with wanting more regulations placed on legal ownership of firearms rather than criminals. The Republican party has tended to be less focused on restricting gun ownership. The first politician that comes to mind when I think of gun regulations is Kevin de Leon from the California Senate. He is very left wing and very uninformed when it comes to guns. Just last June, Mr. Leon wanted to pass 11 more restrictions or laws on legal gun owners. “Large ammunition clips: Bans possession of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 bullets. Bullet buttons:
On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado (Zirming). The incident drew worldwide attention. It led to widespread discussion over gun control and the prevention of school violence. With unstable characters like this jumping through the ineffective background checks, none are safe. You may think our little village is far from any of this. That’s what the families of victims in Sandy Hook said. Gun control is the effort to fight violent crime by strengthening laws on the ownership of firearms. The use of a gun in a crime is more likely to result in a person 's death than the use of most other kinds of weapons, including knives. Gun control laws aim to reduce the criminal use of guns as much as possible and, at the same time, to interfere as little as possible with other gun use. Without it, the world would spiral into chaos.
Following “immediately after the Columbine High School shooting of 1999, even the NRA believed in “absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools.”” as confirmed by Matt Valentine from Politico (Valentine, 2015, p.1). Once an understanding political machine, it has now become an organization dedicated to only the propulsion of its ideas despite devastating consequences. Even some Republicans including Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, a state senator in Florida, declared that “I don’t think any of these bills have anything to do with gun rights. They have to do with public safety, and I don’t think any of these bills make us any safer. In fact, quite the opposite,” and by blocking it from a committee meeting was able to stop the campus carry law from going into effect (Dart, 2016, p.3). In fact, the United States of America is the only first world country that does not have stricter gun control laws. As asserted by Dan Diamond in Forbes who found that “more young people die by guns than cars” unlike the past few decades in which the automobile has been the number one killer (Diamond, 2015, p.1). Nonetheless, shootings have not increased since the 1980’s but rather there is more awareness to each of the mass shootings. Since the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012, a year in which
Gun control is probably one of the most debatable concerns in the constitution. There are many scenarios in which you can see the good in pro-gun control and also other scenarios where con-gun control is good. Gun control should not be a plan the U.S government should take because there are many cases in which a firearm will determine you from death or life. And the right to carry a firearm is like the right to protect our freedom, and to self defend ourselves. Firearms are used defensively roughly 2.5 million times per year, more than four times as many as criminal uses. This amounts to 2,575 lives protected for every life lost to a gun. (SAF) The people that are most concerned by this issue are those that have lost someone close to them
