Due to many of the recent violent acts in our country involving guns, the question has arouse; Should a system of universal background checks be required for all gun purchases? What some Americans do not realize is that guns are constantly falling in the wrong hands of criminals and more often, the mentally ill. There are too many Americans loosing their lives because of this. Most of the people that are ineligible to purchase guns are able to because of the flaws in the universal background system or through private party sales, which do not initiate background checks. Shootings actually occur very frequently. Since 1982, there have been 61 mass shootings, all involving gun use. The United States also holds the record of having 15 of the nastiest 25 shootings. It is proven that more guns result in more murders. States with harsher laws on gun control do not have as many deaths from violence correlated to the use of guns. According to a map provided by The Washington Post, “…states which have one of three gun control restrictions in place – assault weapons’ bans, trigger locks, or safe storage requirements. Firearm deaths are significantly lower in states with stricter gun control legislation (Klein).” Seattle’s Mayor, Ed Murray states “Gun violence kills 86 Americans every day. It happens everywhere: in big cities, small towns, on our streets, schools, shopping malls, and places of worship (Klein).” It is apparent that individuals who have criminal backgrounds or who have a
Mass shootings occur often around a country that is the land of the free and seems to be safe. Universal background checks is a necessity. Too many assault weapons get into the hands of wrong people and the consequences are irreversible. One incident that happened in Connecticut is the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This is a prime example of how assualt weapons got into the hands of the wrong person. Adam Lanza was not the owner of these guns but he had access to them. With universal background checks the lives of 20 kids and 6 adults could have been protected.
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people. As a country the United States has approximately 270,000,000 guns. Both categories top the world. 22% of gun owners own two or more firearms. This gun wave had very humble beginnings from westward expansion to the revolutionary war and to the Second Amendment. This controversial amendment states: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Gun Control in the United States has gone out of control. The United States should enforce laws to not allow any guns in a house hold in order to reduce violence and crime in the country. Reducing the rate of crime in the United States, controlling big weapons, taxing ammunition, and gun collection can help make this happen. Gun Control can make this country a safer environment to live in.
The death rate in America is extremely high and is rising rapidly as time goes on and the youth of the country get older. With this amount of guns in America, someone with the passion to kill someone or themselves, the most convenient way to commit suicide or kill someone would be to obtain one of the million guns across America. There needs to be laws and regulations put forth in order to stop all of this violence due to the easy access of firearms in the United States. Although background checks will not completely end gun related violence in the United States of America; it will reduce
Firearms are rarely used now for in justifiable reasons compared to the thousands of criminal homicides. In the rare event that a gun is legally purchased and registered, there is still a risk that the firearm could be stolen and used by those with the intent to do harm. However, homicides are more often committed through the use of legally owned guns used by the original owner. CNN reports that, “hospitalizations from gunshot wounds cost $700 million a year.” The rates of suicidal, unintentional, legal and homicidal gunshot wounds and fatalities may not be changing with or without implementation of more thorough and strict gun laws. However, there are still millions upon millions of dollars lost in the united states due to firearm injury or death. So, no one gets out of these firearm related events unscathed. The possibility of removing the ability for easy gun access could save so many lives. There should be a screening process put in place that is more thorough and difficult in order for an individual interested in purchasing the gun to be allowed to
“Ban guns and only criminals will have guns, we are told (Milligan, Susan).” Mrs. Milligan has a valid argument with the number of acts of violence committed with firearms by citizens with no prior violent criminal history, as well as children. There have been a number of seemingly avoidable murders committed with firearms in recent years and the count is steadily rising. I agree that there should be some precautions be in place in the process of buying and selling firearms, there should be a check on violent criminal history and unlawful tendencies. There are background checks in place and when you purchase a firearm it is registered to you and the serial number corresponds to your name in the governments system.
It is important to also face the reality that implementing the gun control policy will not do anything to make society safer. The truth is that it is not the guns that kill people. People are the ones killing one another. Thus, even if there is a gun control policy in place, people will still kill others with guns that they secured illegally if they are really desperate to do so. It can also be noticed that in most cases where guns are involved, the guns were purchased illegally and therefore unregistered (Spitzer 2009, p. 24). This only proves that guns can still be acquired by people with the ill intention to kill or hurt others even if there is a gun control policy in place.
In addition to more extensive mental health evaluations, general background checks should be implemented through every single purchase of a gun, rather than the one’s purchased through a Federal Firearms License. If the market for guns (including those purchased online or through a private seller) was mediated more effectively, the probability of somebody with malicious intentions getting caught prior to the act will be significantly increased. When somebody’s access to a gun is easier than their access to a vehicle, you know that there is a serious lack of security and concern for the welfare of this
Gun Control in America has been a major debate since 1995. The debate is never ending because there are so many situations that have surfaced, requiring different policies and exceptions. Guns in America have not only provided protection for some citizens but they have also wounded and killed many citizens. Our laws allow for possession of registered guns with a gun license but it is easy to purchase a gun without showing a legal license. We must remember that although guns are used to kill, they are not the root of the problem. Guns are sometimes used as a result of being mentally unstable. We cannot necessarily say if there were tighter gun control laws there would be less gun related fatalities but we can say that it will result in a better understanding of why firearms other problems that are considered dangerous.
Governments across the globe approach it differently, many are strongly for it, and just as many are against it. In America, gun control has continued to surface to the forefront of debate following any mass shooting event. However, little is ever actually accomplished in the quest to reform gun control in the United States. It could be said that guns are apart of the moral fabric that shaped this country, making it not only free, but great. Unfortunately, guns continuously find their way into the hands of the wrong people. Current state laws require background checks to be done every time you purchase a gun. Conveniently for criminals, the only form of identification you need to purchase a gun is a state driver’s license, so anyone
Most recently, the main proposal to enact gun control is through the use of universal background checks. This paper will present arguments both for and against background checks and gun control in general, but will ultimately advocate for overall stricter gun control laws in the United
According to the U.S Department of Justice “In 1994, 44 million Americans owned 192 million firearms” (p. 1), during the same year, 1,374 people were killed and 14,951 people were injured because of an unintentional firearm situation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1999). Here’s the issue: the amount of people being victims of accidental gun deaths and injuries “has remained relatively constant since” wrote the University of Utah on its document Gun Control Issues, Public Health, and Safety.
In a considerable amount of societies, gun ownership is considered to be a fundamental citizen right while in the majority of others it's a highly restricted one. As I see it, gun ownership should and must be highly restricted and regulated.
The first reason gun control should be in existence is because without law saying otherwise, a gun can be in anyone’s hands. If stricter gun laws were made, more lives would be saved. Not only should there be a standard background check, but I am also a strong supporter of medical background checks. The Council on Foreign Relations states that, “A so-called "gun show loophole," codified in the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, effectively allows anyone, including convicted felons, to purchase firearms without a background check.” ("U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). If there are no boundaries to who can have a gun, anyone and everyone is put at risk. Once it is legal for anyone to have a gun, nothing can be done about it.
The Gun laws today make it incredibly easy to purchase a gun. At a licensed gun store, all someone has to do is walk in and fill out some paperwork, then wait for a background check to be ran on themselves.(4). Accorrding to Money.cnn.com this backround check denies less than 1% of people who take it. This means that out of one hundred million gun buyers only seven hundred thousand people are denied(4). Another way to purchase a gun is through a gun show. Gun shows occur almost weekly around the U.S. At a gun show, no background check is required to purchase a gun(4). This takes away the one true element of protection we have from criminals buying guns. Pbs.org says that “almost all guns used in criminal acts enter circulation
