Although, many people think mental health tests would reduce deaths caused by gun shootings, I think they won’t do much of a difference in the country.
The reason I think a mental health test would not help reduce gun deaths is because any test can be easily passed by anyone. People could just act normal and pass the test. I also think it would just make it harder for people with no issues to purchase a gun. Another reason is because if people don’t pass the test, they would just buy guns illegally. These mental health tests laws would make the black market for firearms even stronger. It will also violate our freedom rights, and gun rights. I feel a lot of people in this country just don’t remember the sacrifices that were made by our ancestors
“GET DOWN!.... SHHH!!!!.... GET DOWN! GET INTO A ROOM AND LOCK IT!!!!” This is the first thing our opposite crew heard as they walked into the ER with a patient last month. Should this crew have recognized the signs of an active shooter? Is walking into a hospital with an active shooter even a real concern? From 2000-2012, there were 154 hospital related shootings in the United States with 235 injuries or deaths. That’s more than 1 shooting a month. As QIC I will implement parts of the “Active Shooter Preparedness” from United States Homeland Security. Knowing exactly what Emergency Action Plans our hospitals have in place will help us know how to recognize and react to possible active shooter situations. Scene safety is constant with EMS.
Do you know what to do if an active shooter situation presents itself? Do you know an active shooter does not always have to be carrying a gun? The Federal Bureau of Investigation website defines an active shooter as an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill in a populated area. In an event of an active shooter, there are three things you should do; run, hide and fight.
The question of how to make our communities safer has a list full of solutions which seem to never end. The great debate begins with have any of these solutions worked, or have the right solutions been put to play. Gun control is a very popular topic today, and rightfully so. The media has shined light on mass shootings that have claimed many lives and destroyed families. The question is on who, or what does the blame fall on. Are the gun owners the responsible, or are the weapons themselves to blame? A solution that has been set forth concludes that in order to become a firearm owner, mental stability should be proved. Should government enforce mental health evaluations for gun purchase?
One of the worst cases of failed reporting of mental health checks was the Virginia Tech Massacre, in April 2007, where a Virginia Tech student named Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and injured 17 others, then killed himself on the college campus in Blacksburg, Virginia (“Mental Health Reporting”). Cho bought a gun despite going through two background checks through licensed gun dealers and having a mental health history in the records that should have prevented him from receiving a gun. Although Virginia had some background check laws at the time, certain cases were masked from the system. But, this is not the only instance, in fact, there have been 102 mass shootings in 2017 alone, from January 1st-April 18 (“Mission.”). Though
How might stricter gun control laws help prevent future school shootings? The answer to this question begins with complete understanding of the epidemic of school shootings as a horrible and morbid act that takes place from a mentally unstable perpetrator. A perpetrator that should never be able to purchase a gun or have access to a gun. Funding needs to be supplied to the President’s proposals to help prevent future school shootings. Funding for more mental health awareness needs to be established in America’s homes and our school’s personnel since many of the mass school shooters showed signs of an unbalanced state of mind. Adding access to citizens medical records through NICS regarding mental illness would prevent the act of legal gun purchases made by a mentally ill perpetrator. Funding for more police officers to protect schools
The mental health system in The United States is flawed and needs serious reform. Many of the mentally ill are failing to seek the help that they need and deserve in a country like the U.S is baffling and must be reassessed. The system causes a rise in gun violence and more specifically, mass shootings. There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration when approaching mental disorders and their correlation with mass shootings. Things such as type of mental disorder, the widespread diagnosis in the US, masculinity in men, and gun laws themselves. This research was done through a series of articles, interviews, and books. Mental disorders need to be taken largely into consideration when trying to find a cause for a shooting, and
The main complication is that America’s corrupted mental health system is a liability to the safety of regular American citizens because mentally ill people do not get the proper help they need and are easily able to gain access to guns. A majority of people with mental illness show signs of having a mental illness and are often not given a proper diagnosis or any diagnosis at all. Only one-third of the people with mental illness who have committed mass shootings in the U.S. since 1900 had sought or received mental health care prior to their attacks. This information suggests that most shooters do not seek or receive care that they need (Duwe 1). If a person with a mental illness is left untreated they could end up hurting themselves or others. Sandy hook mass shooter Adam Lanza presented clear signs of schizophrenia but was not issued the proper care he needed. (Turndoff 5). Another instance where the mental health system has failed is in a case where an individual with mental illness may be diagnosed, but their case is not taken seriously and left untreated. For instance, the notorious Charleston Church shooter Dylann Roof was diagnosed with a host of multiple disorders by a
Next time there 's a mass shooting, don 't jump to blame the people with a mental illness and the people responsible for them. Look first at the NRA services that gave them the guns that caused the chaos and death, and the laws in the state where the shooting took place. People are so angry at the fact that criminals with an mental illness kill people and blame them. When really the gun is the reason why people die. Sure they pulled the trigger, but considering that
People need to realize that people with mental health can be dangerous if we don't get them the help that they need. If we keep on selling people with mental health issues guns then there will be a lot more school shooting but we can decease that. If we make it so if we see a person with an intent of but a gun and they have a history of having mental health issues, then why are we selling them guns I know the its our second amendment witch is the right to bare arms but would you rather loose 17 children or take away that right for persons with a record of mental issues, I don't know, you pick
The debate over gun control is not a new argument, neither is the existence of mental illness. There have been those who support and those who oppose gun control for many years. What has recently re-ignited the debate is an increase in mass shootings over the past few decades; one in particular is the Newtown, Connecticut, massacre. Incidents, such as this, fuel anger and fear, driving many to question the need for firearms in modern society, while others cite these incidents as a reason for remaining armed. The purpose of gun control is to limit the amount of violence in today’s
The issues of gun violence and crimes has been a major concern in the life of every American citizen. While these issues affect everyone, however black people especially black men and youths are more likely to be victims. With each passing day, the chances of living a normal life without fear of being killed or injured is becoming very difficult and impossible for black people in America. Gun violence and crimes seems to have become a public health crisis and epidermis that won't easily go away unless effective action are taken. Most black people are beginning to learn how to adjust to this new norms. The major concern of most black families at this point is the safety of
Those with mental health issues need to be helped, but we also need better gun control just the same. One of the main claims I hear often in rebuttal to the call for stricter gun laws is that “gun control won’t work”. “What about Chicago?” many often ask as if that alone will prove their point. Even our President has cited Chicago as “proof” that stricter gun laws won’t work with the false claim that Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the nation. Research by both National Public Radio and the website FactCheck.org has shown that while the state of Illinois does have stricter laws than many states, Chicago does not have the restrictions that many have been led to believe. In fact, multiple of these tough gun laws that were passed over the years have been removed since 2013 or earlier, leaving Chicago no more tough than the state’s requirement of being a license holder. However, it is true that even when they did have stricter gun laws that the city still saw heavy gun violence, but this is easily explained. In one 2015 study at Northwestern University of Law, it was concluded that 60% of all new guns recovered by law enforcement were purchased out of state. To answer the question that so many people pose about Chicago’s gun violence:
This should help lower the amount of shootings committed by unstable people. The majority of people who commit mass shootings are diagnosed as mentally ill. If people had to take a psychological test to receive a gun permit, a lot less people would carry guns. The problem is getting psychological help is expensive, not accepted by society and hard to find. If these illness programs were more affordable more people would go to them. When was the last time a commercial was played about a psychology program? Commercials play everyday about depression medication and a million other medications but no help programs. This is because if a place such as the “Bradley Center” is brought up in a conversation people automatically make a face and assume they are “crazy”. These programs and hospitals need to spread awareness and advertise the symptoms of possibly being unstable. With more awareness, lower prices, and acceptance from peers more people will seek help and there will be less issues such as mass shootings from these individuals. Mental illness is one of the many test that should be performed when receiving a gun permit to help prevent a
If US citizens do not have guns than many of these citizens will be in harm's way. Gun control will not prevent suicides. If gun laws are enacted there will still be suicides. Suicide is one of the main causes of death. Many countries that have low gun rates have high suicide rates. Also taking away guns is not going to cure mental illnesses. The US should not take away from stable people but instead take these guns away from mentally unstable people. Many school shootings and or mass shootings happen from mentally unstable humans. The United States should send more money to mental facilities or psychiatric hospitals instead of taking the money and putting it towards gun control. Not only should the US put more funding towards mental and psychiatric
In today's world there is a big debate on what we should do with guns. Some think we should ban guns, or limit gun possession. Others think we should keep our guns, after all, we have the Second Amendment, which protects the right for civilians to bear arms. But i believe there is another option, I think there is a link between the mass shootings and mental disabilities and diseases, and if that’s true, we should worry about that. According
