The city of New Orleans is one of the most populated cities in the United States of America Within the city communities face serious problems daily. Crime is major issue that haunts the mind of people within the community. Gun violence in New Orleans is a serious issue that needs to be solved. It seems like every day there is person that loses there life to gun violence. New Orleans murder rate is one of the highest in the United States today. Most of the gun violence is because of senseless people doing stupid things. I’m against gun violence because I feel that no one should lose their life for any reason. In this essay I will explain what I think could help stop gun violence, and what’s already being done to combat it.
First, I think that

In an interview with Officer Warren G. Haywood of the NOPD, he said that guns are obtained illegally through loopholes. Those who have these guns are fugitives from justice, illegal aliens, unlawful users of certain drugs. High crimes rates have resulted in this city be one of American most dangerous city according to the Travel and Leisure magazine that is located in New York, and is the most read magazine in New York. When this magazine analyzed the city of New Orleans critically, it learned that among many cities in the country New Orleans has one of the highest per capita murder rates in the United States. For the last decade, statistics have shown that the murder rate is four to six times higher than the national average. To solve this problem I think implementation of stiffer prison sentences for gun crimes, and gun buy-backs could be of some use to prevent firearm related …show more content…
The rivalry between individual has been found to be the largest cause of all this death. The most affected group is the youths whom they end up creating gangs and living together as groups. Due to competition and the will of one group feeling or wanting to be much superior to the other has resulted in the crimes. The most used guns are an AK47assult rifle and 9mm handguns according to inspector Warren (Evans 2008). Women have been seen to be the most concerned when it comes to this matter. For example, Elizabeth Oostburg tells how life has become so hard that she is struggling to feed her family. At the same time she fears they may not make it to tomorrow as the night life gets too dangerous. Also, the incident of victims who have been injured by the gun are also familiar with this place. Many people despite protesting have been freeing in this city due to fear for their life. One reason which has caused this is racism. Although there are different people from different parts of the world living here, there is a large group of the whites and the blacks. Sometimes the whites may disvalue the blacks and find them being less talented and kind of weak (McNaulty 2008). Shootings scandal is very prone especially at Algerians. In a documentary called Shell-shocked one young boy in an interview explains “It is easier to find a gun than a
The studies and research on gun control has opened up many ideas on how weak the current laws really are. Crime rates consist of high numbers. “Since 1982, there have been at least 62 mass shootings across the country, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii”
Every day 297 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides, unintentional shootings, and police intervention. Everyday 89 people die from gun violence, 31 of those people are murdered. Today I'm going to be talking about the social justice issue of gun violence. Gun violence, death and injury from firearms is a major issue in all parts of our world. Gun violence continues to affect young people, lower-income people, and communities of color. This social justice and public health issue occurs in places all over the world, however it has become such an epidemic in the United States that it will result in gun violence being one of the main topics in the 2016 presidential election. There are many causes for gun violence, for example, in this day and age pop culture influence is the greatest cause of gun violence. Guns have also became more accessible and easy to obtain. Poor identification and treatment of mentally ill people is another significant cause for gun violence.
According to the Toronto Police Service, in 2016 alone there has been an astonishing 190 incidents involving gun violence, with 39 of them resulting in death. This has been a 50% increase from the previous year. So how must we combat this incessant and utterly unnecessary bloodshed on the streets of Toronto? Well, first we must make a distinction that guns do not kill people, but rather, people kill people. This highlights that gun violence is not primarily due to the weapon itself, but the social conditions that instigate such altercations. Therefore, we must make an effort to increase the communal services available to those situated in areas with a history of gun violence. Particularly, these
During the past years gun violence has seen an enormous increase in various parts of the world and majority of the cases been reported in the United States. The case includes victims such as children, senior citizens and young adults engaging in violence or getting caught in the crossfires. The life of common people is being affected, people are concerned as to how they can live safe lives when guns are being used in increasing numbers. On an average, every day you hear about some sort of gun violence affecting people either in your hometown or in another part of the world. It is a shame for a country like United States to have such high
The Orlando nightclub shooting in Florida on June 12, 2016 was the single largest massacre in U.S history, taking the lives of 50 individuals, including the shooter himself, and injuring 53 others. This is one extreme example of the gun violence that has been occurring in this country, but mass shootings like this and the one at Newton in 2012 are only a small part of our gun violence issue. The everyday gun violence that takes place in cities all across the United States claims the lives of thousands every single year. According to The Guardian, 33,500 civilians die each year because of gun brutality- “that’s about 1 life every 15 minutes” (Beckett). Between the years of 1999 and 2013, there were 464,003 gun deaths in the U.S, about 58% of them were suicides 37% were homicides. (ProCon.org) Gun violence and the consequences of that violence, have become a real and dangerous problem in the U.S , why else would the CDC list the United States as having the highest rate of gun violence out of all developed countries today? (Gale Opposing Viewpoints) This issue is not just attributable to a single factor, there are several that play an important part in why gun violence is such an issue in the U.S, namely laws and poverty; and in these causes we can also find solutions.
Mass shootings and acts of terrorism are starting to seem like an everyday occurrence. More and more we see on the news that people are killed by gun violence and there needs to be a change. “Every year more than 30,000 Americans have their lives cut short by guns. Suicides. Domestic violence. Gang shootouts. Accidents. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have lost brothers, sisters, or buried their own children.” (Obama, Para. 1). Gun violence is a big issue in the United States because of the amount of lives lost each year due to it. The problem of gun violence has been on the rise and United States has seen an increase of school shootings on the news. In order to save lives this problem needs to be fixed immediately. Fixing the gun violence
Hence, many would believe that gun purchases would plummet; however, the opposite has occurred. Gun manufacture has risen around 40% since then. These correlations show that the access to guns do not contribute to the violence. Another scenario many pro-Gun Control advocates dismiss is how the crime guns are obtained. In a study conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, data has shown around 79% of crime guns are obtained through friends/family or street/illegal sources; thus, if the criminals wanted to acquire firearms they will find a source. In the BJS’ survey only 8.3% of the offenders bought their guns from a retail store. The government can only prevent these delinquents from obtaining guns in registered sources like retail stores, pawn shops, flea markets, and Federal Firearm License (FFL) certified gun shows. The other option is to take away the 226 year old right to “bear arms” created by our Founding Fathers. Instead of taking away prerogatives of the United States civilians, the government should target illegal selling, purchasing, and trading of
As we all know gun violence has become an increasingly conflicted issue in the world and specifically in the United States. Gun violence is the leading cause of premature death in the United States as it kills almost 30,000 people and causes about 60,000 injuries annually. But guns are not the main cause of this problem. The problem is America's culture of violence. We need to understand that guns are not what’s killing people, people are what’s killing people. Although guns may enable killers to commit an act of violence more easily and effectively, stricter laws on guns would not necessarily dismantle the problem. Currently, guns are just a symptom to the real problem, which is our violent human nature. For decades, we have been dousing
In the United States, the average number of gun shot victims is through the roof. A good amount of these victims are even child. This cite shows statistics of gun violence broken down into days and years. These gun violence statistics include assault, murder, suicide, police investigations, and accidents. The amounts and reasons behind the gun violence are presented in the statistics.
Have you ever heard of gun violence? If you ask somebody that question you will probably hear a sarcastic laugh and regret the debate you just started. It is something that has widely taken over media. It doesn 't matter where are you are, the barber shop or on your couch watching TV. The talk of gun violence is in everything you do. Monica Davey writes this article to get Americans to realize the tragedies that are taking place in Chicago.
According to the Congressional Digest, in an article called Gun Violence Prevention, it states, “Firearms fatalities increased by 3.8 percent in 2005 to 30,694, by 0.7 percent in 2006 to 30,897, and by 1.1 percent in 2007 to 31,224” (Gun Violence Prevention 4). In today’s world, it is becoming a commonplace for us to flip on the news and hear about some tragic murder, mass shooting, etc. It has become extremely evident that we are sweeping these tragedies under the carpet, because, in fact, there is something we can do. What if the solution was a simple as a ban? What if we could decrease gun related violence drastically with one small change? Through my extended research of this topic, I have
One reason that America has a homicide rate seven times higher than other developed countries is because many citizens do not listen to and follow the rules and regulations regarding firearms set in place by the government (Seitz-Wald). For example, it is illegal to move firearms across borders, yet about one-third of the guns involved in crime have been moved interstate. It is also illegal to sell anyone under the age of 21 a gun, but the most common ages of those who commit crimes with guns is 19, 20, and 18 (Bennett). If people followed these rules more strictly, the homicide, suicide, and unintentional death rate in the United States would go down tremendously. On the other hand, underage people should not be allowed to acquire guns. It is against the law and it is the people who acquire the guns who are criminals and cause more disasters, not the law-abiding civilians (Goldberg). While gun control laws may not prevent criminals from obtaining guns because people who commit a crime once are more likely to commit more in the future, they would still lessen the amount of people who would potentially buy guns and use them as a weapon against other people. Gun control laws would also help reduce the societal costs that arise do to gun violence (Barrett). Cities such as Chicago and Oakland have been constantly named as some of the most unsafe cities in the world. This turns
Turning on the news and hearing about a shooting or a armed robbery has become normal. Everyone has a gun now a days, even young kids get their hands on guns. The media teaches these children that having a gun is what makes you “cool”. If a 8 year old boy stole his dads gun and showed all his friends he would be praised. Imagine getting a call from the school saying your son is dead because his friend brought a gun to school and it went off. This has become a sad reality of something that happens way to frequently today. According to the National Institute of Justice 467,321 crimes committed in 2011 involved a gun. Action needs to be taken to lower this number because gun are for protection not malicious killing. When applying
It is impossible not to open a newspaper, watch the television, or listen to the radio with out hearing about some type of gun violence. Perhaps the main reason for such high gun violence is that guns are so plentiful in the Unites States. In fact, there are sixty five million handguns in America ("The `facts' about Guns"). These guns contribute to an annual medical cost of fourteen billion dollars, which is spent solely on treating gun victims ("Handguns in America"). Not surprisingly, handguns are the cause of eighty percent of homicides, seventy percent of suicides, and almost every accidental shooting ("Youth and Violence"). Handgun violence is a problem that is easy for everyone to see. How to solve this predicament is another
Crime is a predicament all around the world that has been happening since laws were first created in Rome during years of the three digits. The U.S in particular has the largest prison population of more than 1.57 million inmates, as stated by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, and growing over time. As reported by thinkprogress.org, it is estimated that 1 in 31 citizens are under U.S. corrections custody either through parole, probation, or incarceration. With these statistics, you’d wonder why there is so much crime and what can be done about it. Whether people like it or not, it is the person that commits the crime, not the gun itself, or whatever could be blamed. Therefor the focus is on them alone. The question is what lead them to that point in time during their life, and how can it be prevented later on. The rehabilitation programs, such as drug recovery, education, and counselling relating to incarceration of a criminal are essential to preventing recidivism. Each individual offender needs to be reformed and recovered through specific programs catering to their mental
