There is an estimated 300 million registered gun owners in the United States. With that many Americans owning guns, its not a surprise nearly 68% of all homicides reported to the FBI involved firearms. It’s a good thing the forensics of firearms has advanced to a point that with just a single round recovered, ballistic experts can tell investigators, what caliber round was fired what type of weapon fired the round, and in some cases the distance at which the round was fired. Without such advancement, more murderers would be walking free.
When arriving to a crime scene where weapons are present, safety is always top priority. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. When deciding to unload a weapon you always want to do so with the utmost care, to preserve all types of evidence. This evidence includes fingerprints, blood, hair or fibers, cylinder “halos” and debris in the barrel and /or cylinder.(www.crime-scene-investigtor.net) Firearms should be unloaded and placed in a safe condition at the point of collection. If the collector is unsure of the proper procedure, assistance should be sought from a competent source such as a firearms instructor, departmental armorer, or an on-site firearm examiner. Always follow your department regulations. When unloaded revolvers prior to moving the cylinder it should be marked to indicate its position as found. This can be done by two pen or scribe marks on the top of the cylinder along each side of the top strap of the frame. The position
With the popular culture providing positive images of guns, the United States has a gun prevalence that is very rare in the modern world. While many people appreciate the “gun culture”, guns are heavily involved in violence in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Justice, since 1960, more than 750,000 Americans have died under firearms, including homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. The figure 1 provides a comprehensive survey of U.S. violent crimes for the period from 1993 to 2011.This figure illustrates that from 1993 to 2011, about 60% to 70% of homicides were associated with a firearm. Over the same period, between 6% and 9% of all nonfatal violence, with about 20% to 30% of robberies and 22% to 32% of aggravated assaults involving a firearm.
According to Jeffery Goldberg, guns are responsible for 30,000 deaths a year. This causes people who hear about crimes with guns involved to immediately think that the gun is the issue, but often guns are what saved the vi¬¬ctims life. Sharon Harris cited leading criminologist Gary
Researchers at the University of Alabama have conducted studies trying to find links between guns and mass shootings (Michaels). There are hundreds of millions of guns in circulation in America today. In fact, “the total number of guns in circulation is at least 240 million” (Ballaro and Finley). Adam Lankford, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Alabama, suggests that “America’s high rate of public mass shootings is connected with the number of guns circulating in the country” (Michaels). Implementing stricter gun laws would cause fewer people to want to purchase guns, resulting in fewer guns in circulation in the coming years. In the United States, “around 30,000 people die from gun fire each year. Around half of these are murders, a little less than half are suicides, and the rest are lethal accidents” (Ballaro and Finley). (2) Currently there are several million guns in circulation, and gun deaths in America are higher than any other developed country. (5) If the trend continues, the number of gun deaths will continue to increase. As stated in the article “10 Pro-Gun Myths, Shot Down.” author Dave Gilson states that “People with access to more guns tend to kill more people- with guns. States with higher gun ownership rates have higher gun murder rates- as much as 114% higher than states with lower gun ownership rates” (Gilson). (7) More
As the production of firearms has grown to become a multibillion dollar industry, the exposure the public has had to firearms has also increased accordingly. Because more and more individuals have chosen to own guns, the amount of innocents that have been killed has consequently climbed. In the United States, since 1.69 million kids age 18 and under are living in households
There is no reason why so many people, living in what is supposed to be a peaceful society, possess guns. About 16,272 murders were committed in the United States during 2014. Of these, about 10,886, or 67%, were committed with firearms. A nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 0.5% of households had members who had used a gun for defense during a
The debate over gun control laws is a very controversial issue in the United States and out of the many issues currently up for debate in American politics, there is no other topic that has a partisan divide quite as deep as the debate over gun control. Few people advocate for mass shootings or other forms of gun violence, except of course for the perpetrators of such actions. It may be easy to blame the recent uptick of gun violence in recent years on the sheer prevalence of guns in American society. After all, if there are no guns that means there should be no mass shootings, right? Many estimates put the number of guns owned by Americans at over 300 million and often more than the U.S. population itself. (112.6 guns per 100
Firearms that are left behind at a crime scene can be extremely helpful. This evidence includes not only the firearm itself but also the ammunition used in the firearm, componets that make up the firearms, and the residue that comes out when the
Handguns are not the only types of guns used in murders and robberies. There have also been cases where shot guns and rifles have been used in crimes and murder. Shotguns are becoming more popular in crime. When a person fires a shotgun, the B.B.’s inside the shell spread out, and since a shotgun is so powerful, the B.B.’s will travel a great distance. There is no need for accuracy with a shotgun, but with a pistol the person either has to be at very close range or he has to have good marksmanship. Rifles are even more dangerous, because they combine accuracy and distance. A person could hit small targets at long distances if the gun is sighted properly; therefore, he would not have to be close to the
There is a large pool of murders and not only by firearms. For example, the FBI has statistics that roughly 4,000-5,000 murders were committed from 2009-2013 in the United States with weapons excluding firearms. These other weapons include the following: knives, blunt objects, personal weapons, poison, explosives, fire, narcotics, drowning, strangulation, asphyxiation and much more that
In the event that any firearm is discovered at a crime scene there are certain steps that need to be done in order to properly collect any type of firearm evidence. If there is any kind of firearm found at the scene it should be rendered safe immediately. For safety is the first priority at any crime scene. Forensic technicians should assign an evidence number to the firearm, photograph orientation and close-up view’s, and take measurements of the firearm’s location prior to collecting it. In order to deem a semiautomatic pistol safe, the forensic technician should be wearing latex gloves an unload the weapon as follows; (Tina Young, 2011)
Approximately 70 percent of murder victims in the United States in 1989 were killed with firearms. According to estimates, guns are responsible for injuring 70,000 victims last year, some were left disabled. In the United States the cost of shootings ranged to more than 14 billion nationwide for medical care. Children are often the cause of murders today. When kids find weapons in the parents or friend’s house they are often tempted to play with them. Unfortunately a lot of times the guns are loaded
You have seen the articles, the top 20 firearms all Preppers need, or the five best self defense handguns, or here is a list of the best rifles or shotguns for home defense and the lists go on. Confusing, and you probably did not learn anything, and you may feel somewhat slighted, because you do not have any of the guns that the so-called expert was stating emphatically that you need.
Several peer reviewed studies on the subject of gun ownership and gun related homicides were identified and reviewed. During the research phase it was noted that there are opponents and proponents of gun control that present logical sounding arguments, but there have been several research studies conducted that suggest that there is a positive correlational relationship between gun ownership and gun related deaths, particularly gun related homicides. This paper will review many studies that have been conducted on the correlation between gun ownership and availability and the rate of gun related homicides. The majority of the studies focus on comparing the United States to other countries since it has been found that the United States has a disproportionate amount of gun related deaths when compared to other countries of comparable economic and political status.
Most U.S. citizens have probably heard of the Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook; they probably know immediately that these names are in reference to mass shootings and/or massacres where firearms were used. The fact of the matter is that innocent deaths by guns are becoming a common occurrence in the United States. Some say that guns kill people, others say that people kill people. Although murder pre dates guns, murder rates have skyrocketed since guns have become mass produced and readily available. Guns
The firearm will not always be on scene. There have also been times where there are no casings or firearms, the only evidence is gun residue and bullet holes. This can make solving the crime difficult. It is very important to process a crime scene correctly and with precaution to safety when dealing with firearm evidence (Young, 2011).
