We already know that there has been a precipitous decline in the study of liberal arts because many people do not value it anymore. English and history are now being pushed aside for math or science. Fareed Zakaria, an American journalist and author, in his article, “What's the Use of a Liberal Education?” writes, “Even President Obama recently urged students to keep in mind that a technical training could be more valuable than a degree in art history. Majors like English, once very popular and highly respected, are in steep decline.” This mindset is causing many people to turn away from liberal arts-based subjects, so they can pursue something that would “be more valuable”.

Even though they have been important and still are today, many people think that they should not be a part of college curricula. In 1976, Congress passed the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) in response to a growing national concern about public exposure to toxic chemicals. Since then, it has largely been hailed as a failure for two reasons. First, TSCA has been unable to effectively compel producers to test and disclose adequate information on chemical toxicity. Second, it has been ineffective at designating sufficient resources to the EPA to identify and reduce the possible health and environmental risks associated with new chemicals. Nonetheless, it has been devoid of major revisions since its implementation. In the nearly 40 years of congressional inaction on this issue, many states have intervened by enacting stricter chemical laws that fill in TSCA’s gaps.

The question that many might ask: Why is dance not classified as a sport? Dancers that compete in competitive situations do not get off as easily as people may think. These dancers require countless hours of exercising, training, and stretching, just as much, if not more, than other sports. To perfect the art of dancing comes with years of training and dedication. On the 8th of August at the Pavilion 2 of Rio centro, 2016 Olympics, the woman's weightlifting competition was held. Marie García earned herself second place after lifting 242 kg, under Jackie Robinson, lifting an outstanding 261 kg. Maria García, being the previous gold medalist for 3 years, was not happy with the results. On August 9th, García demands for Robinson to be disqualified from the competition, which funnily enough, will boost her up to first place. Her anger is aimed towards the fact that Jackie Robinson is a transgender male who competed in the women's weightlifting. Boxing - a violent cage fight, or a crowd pleasing sport? Boxing is a high intensified sport that can be seen as helping the fighter in life or permanently damaging the fighters future. Many say that boxing is one of the safest sports; however, boxing can leave permanent brain damage from constant punches to the skull. The sport boxing is for managers to earn money while their fighter is in the ring fighting against another human until one gives up, or gets knocked out. A fight could be the end of one’s career, or even one’s life. Boxing should be banned because the money earned does not trump the risk of death, the mixed messages from fighters in the ring confuse the laws regarding assault, and the constant punches to and athletes head leaves permanent damage.

Comment: To avoid any more drastic cuts and burning through the cash reserves, we will need to bring in a higher sales tax immediately. The difficulty of placing a higher sale tax is getting Legislature to approve this. My colleagues and I have been consistent with attending conferences in Sacramento and Washington D.C. seeking for advocates to help with funding VTA. VTA faces a projected $6 billion deficit over the next two decades if we don’t get an approval for high sales tax. If this doesn’t work out, we will continue to cut more services in order to keep VTA doors open.
