As two new co-advisors step up to lead HOSA, Health Occupations Students of America, Lisa Cardillo and Sarah Brink do their best to assist the club. The goal of HOSA is to introduce health careers to students, for the hope to enhance future health care. Students who are interested in the health related fields can benefit from joining the club since HOSA allows them to have an opportunity to shadow health professionals. Being dedicated towards the club and having motivation to lead, Cardillo and Brink use their experiences to help guide students to find their passion. Familiarizing themselves on how HOSA runs is a challenge for the new co-advisors; however, other obstacles that they have to face are planning field trips, and helping students
This summer, I will be attending Prefreshman Health Careers Academics and Enrichment Program at Howard University in Washington, DC. I plan to build on my knowledge of
I joined HOSA freshmen year, looking for opportunities to explore new things and develop new friendships. I was hoping to expand my knowledge about health care careers in a fun and interactive setting, HOSA provided me with just that. HOSA gave me with the platform, which I was looking for to improve my knowledge about the health science field. I was able to compete at the state level in Greensboro, and at the national level in Nashville. For me, attending these competitions provided me with an experience that greatly increased my interest and knowledge of the medical field. Becoming a HOSA district officer would enable me to further enrich my experiences by becoming a better leader and communicator, by sharing my experiences with younger students who are interested in joining the health care field, and grants me to have a bigger impact in HOSA and in my community. Becoming a HOSA district officer will allow me to improve myself as well as bettering the lives of others.
Most six-year-olds have dreams of becoming a ballerina or an astronaut, not me, I have known since I was in kindergarten that I want to be a doctor and help the people around me. I joined HOSA-Future Health Professionals my freshman year to gain insight and knowledge towards a potential career in the healthcare industry although I was unaware of the opportunities that I would now be able to experience and growth that would now be possible for myself. Looking back on the years since joining HOSA, I have watched myself grow as a leader who continues to learn more every day about better ways to serve those around me. By the end of my first State conference freshman year, I knew I wanted to become more involved in HOSA-Future Health Professionals and someday run for State Office. When I joined HOSA, I viewed the state officers as role models for their love for HOSA and desire to serve the members. Here I am three years later, going after a goal I set for myself as a timid freshman, hopeful that each of these qualities I saw in these state officers are a few of the qualities that people will see in me every day.
HOSA, Health Occupations Students of America, diversified by culture but united in a single goal, to care for the people of it in the best way possible. HOSA is best explained by the commitment of its members to not settle for adequacy, but strive to formulate new ideals and push for new heights. During this time I would like to explain to you how as a student in HOSA you can innovate- inspire- and ignite to make the impact in the world that you want to be.
Such a goal is priceless for an aspiring healthcare professional such as myself. In the increasingly globalized and complex world of healthcare, an education based in the philosophies of community and an inquiry-based approach to the liberal arts is an excellent foundation
Intro to Health Occupations opened my eyes to the many, many amazing healthcare career choices that there are. After completing a two week long career project, I was certain that my answer to the question was, “I want to be a physician’s assistant!” I have seen how much healthcare workers have positively impacted people, and that also really helped me to figure out “what I want to be when I grow up.”
Life is full of wonderful and unique opportunities that each individual experiences. Many people said that academic success is one of the best ways to achieve a great future, but I also agree that taking the chance to learn from a different perspective other than the classroom can enhance the intelligent of a person. Since I was little, learning was something I was always passionate about. On the other hand, meeting new friends was never an act I enjoyed because I was too scared that others wouldn’t like me. When I became a member of HOSA: Future Health Professional, my life changed dramatically as I got the chance to explore who I am as a person, a friend, a future health professional, and most importantly, a leader.
Client A had her four month old baby removed from her care despite our best efforts at a 1027 hearing. It was alleged the baby had fractured ribs, and it was either the father or mother so charges were filed against both parents. The trial stretched out over several months and after cross examining the doctor who testified and putting the primary physician on the stand, the Court came back with a finding that our client did not abuse her daughter. Her daughter was immediately returned to her care. Client B is an immigrant who has been a client of HLAS for many years. At one stage, client B had all of her children removed from her care. She worked very hard to get all of her children back, and her two youngest were the last. The father of
David sought to volunteer and/or job shadow at several medical facilities and was told by the HR departments that because of HIPAA laws and insurance regulations he had to be 18 years old. David thought if he had a name behind him to give him credibility in the medical world he could break down those barriers the HR departments had set before him as a teenager. Using skills from his 4-H background he formulated a plan and executed it. He started a 4-H Club, which is a 4-H club that has a specific interest, David chose medical careers. To get the program off the ground, David used his networking skills to enlist the help of the medical school at Southern Illinois University, where he is a student in the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program (P4). Because of David’s position in the P4, he has been able to secure many speakers and offer up engaging hands-on medical experiences for the 4-H Club members. The club moved beyond David’s wildest dreams when he was interviewed for a newspaper article and a Physician Assistant read the article. The PA who was intrigued by the idea of teens getting a taste of medicine before spending a lot of money on education and realizing that medicine was not for them decided to give the group a try. Through that article 4-H members are now experiencing the practice of medicine first hand
At Thursday’s HSAA board meeting, Frank and I had the opportunity to hear an update from Governor Ducey’s health policy advisor, Christina Corieri, on what Ducey is hearing about the Senate’s ACA Repeal and Replace bill. Details are below, but please do not share beyond this group.
My partner and I decided it was the perfect time to come up with a plan for our health career display for the HOSA(Health Occupations Students of America) club in school. We both found the cardiovascular system fascinating and were intrigued of the work surgeons do. It was a clear choice that we would do ours about cardiovascular surgeons. A few weeks passed from that day and I remember getting discouraged about being able to make a good enough display. I heard from a few students who tried and never made it passed the first round of competition because of all the other amazing displays. My partner and I tried to withdraw from the competition but our teacher wouldn’t let us and told us that we had to at least try. Looking back on that day, one of the best decisions I’ve made was not giving up when I felt completely
The health info fair is a annual event which is organized by members of the Davis Health Careers Academy. Students together with the teachers start preparing for this event from the beginning of the school year. The students are divided into groups of 4-5 and each group is given a specific topic to research about. Each grade level has a different topic. During my sophomore year our grade level discussed about the different careers in the health field. My group was given the opportunity to research about careers in the rehabilitation sector. This year we were given the chance to research about the different systems of human body and my group researched about the circulatory system. The health info fair is also a time for students to have fun and socially interact with others. Students get a chance to look at other students work. This short essay discusses about the two groups which I found interesting and they are registered nurse and surgeons.
The largest US law enforcement presence aboard is staffed by ICE under the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Homeland Security Investigations International Affairs Office (HSI-IA). DHS has 69 offices situated in 47 countries to include staff situated at seven US military combatant commands. The Alternative to the HCAHPS issue can be viewed in various points. Today these scores are used to determine whether or not a hospital will be reimbursed through Medicare, as well as serving as a patient review of the hospital. This is the equivalent of consumer reviews on hotels, products and services. The survey was created to provide insight into patient centered medicine and evaluate quality based on recently discharged patients on their hospital experience with hospital staff. The overall performance holds a lot of power for these hospitals. The question, however, that should be asked is whether or not this process is opposing or supporting health care in the area of cost containment.
“Without a new type of policy discussion that questions rules of exclusion and raises unpopular racial criticism, we have little hope of generating the power, intensity, or deep interracial solidarity needed to produce fundamental health reform” (Geronimus & Thompson, 2004, p. 264)
