HP: Potentials and Limitations Name School Hewlett- Packard has long been regarded as one of the companies at the forefront of the campaign for sustainable industry and responsible waste management. With the ICT sector (information and communication technologies) contributing to about 2% of the world's carbon footprints, Hewlett-Packard fully transformed its organizational structure to integrate concepts of sustainability. However, HP still recognizes some limitations in their innovations, particularly in replacing key parts. The emergence of thermoplastic rubber/elastomer (TPR/TPE) and polyethylene-derived hybrids, whose popularity has been embraced by some companies, is still yet to be adopted by HP. The company is still conducting researches to test the long-term and short-term benefits of these materials. Moreover, because HP is rigorous in its research and quality control, rapid developments in technologies which are adopted by rival companies have decreased HP's ability to adapt to the ever-changing markets. Another limitation set up by HP's focus on 'green' materials is its focus on the laptop/ personal systems market, a niche which has shown steady decline in the past years. Despite having acquired the EnergyStar seal and developing solid and 'green' products, it still is hesitant to enter the more proditable tablet market whose resources are less 'green.' Tablet products, being very popular in the recent years, is still a fierce and competititve market, and it seems that being eco-friendly is regarded as a lesser criteria than the overall quality and performance of these products.
