During the narrative writing unit I wrote a story on my experience with trying to perform at community meeting. The purpose of this unit was to teach our readers a lesson through our own experiences, and my overall score was a 78. The lesson I wanted to teach was that not everything in the world is going to go your way and that's completely natural, and something we all go through that we should learn to accept. The Habits of Heart and Mind that connects to my story is perseverance. (show para. 5)This habit connects because instead of simply giving up and backing away like a coward, I decided to at the most audition because I had a chance of performing either way. During this assignment I learned to use sensory details which is in depth explaining …show more content…
Another learning target I did well on was internal thoughts, which I as well, had a 4 on.In my piece, I show a understanding of internal thoughts on paragraph 5, where I wrote, “ I decided not to let it bother me, and just ask tomorrow, not that I had much choice. I did as I decided but my sleep problems, seemed to have been worse that night. I tossed, turned almost fell of my bed, and stuffed my head into my pillow.” Two learning targets i still need to work on are sensory details and conventions. Now, although this is based on my narrative,I will say that I finished on the very last day we had to finish, and so I rushed a lot of my work and did not take the time to look over it very thoroughly for mistakes, which may be why I have such a low score on these two learning targets for the rubric. The writing process helped me to get a full understanding of my writing before beginning to draft aso I can have a narrative that flows, and reads correctly. Accountability also helped me to make the deadline because I kept myself accountable to my deadlines, even though it resulted in me having mistakes in my
What chapter did you like best in Eight Habits of the Heart? Explain in great detail why it was your favorite chapter. I like best chapter eight hope, because Clifton Taulbert had obstacle in his life but he was hoping someday would come his hope to reality. So, everyone live by hope, we do not know what going to happen but we hope to come up great things in our life.
Habit as defined in Webster’s as a: a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance b : an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary (Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online, 2011). Behavior is the manner of conducting oneself or anything that an organism does involving action and response to stimulation. In everyday life habits are formed and intertwined with ones behavior. People are often associated with the way they behave
Habits of The Heart create a vision of the middle class American life with all its good, bad, strengths and weaknesses. Its examines the conflict that exists between individuality and community in this country, as well as how these conflicts effect our ability to form relationships with others, whether it is in a public arena or our own intimate relationships with family and friends. The very word individualism means to look out for number one, it implies a me society that has lost it’s way from the way it use to be. The title “Habits Of The Heart” creates images of love, faith, hope and commitment to others, a sense of belonging to something larger than yourself. Does individualism really exist, or is it that people tend to forget where
The Eight Habits of Mind are traits supposedly needed in order to be successful in school and life - eight characteristics that are essential in order to achieve your goals. The first trait is curiosity – a characteristic that I definitely have. Part of being a teenager is struggling with your identity and pondering your purpose. Questions that I find thinking about often is what is the meaning of life? Does a God really exist? How can humans have the potential to be so evil and yet be peaceful and kind? Are we trapped by a predestined fate, or are we solely responsible for what happens in our lives? Does everything happen for a reason? How can there be so much wealth and yet so much poverty in the world? I wish I knew the answers to these questions. (Humans have a tendency to want to be able to know everything so that they can feel in
In my life there have been many times where I have been taught important lessons or supported by others, but my most prominent memory is from sixth grade choir. In this moment in time, Mrs. Symans taught me a very important life lesson about attitude and hard work. I initially did not appreciate this because it upset me, but as I continue to progress through school and life, I’ve realized how much this particular memory, along with the help from others, has helped me over the years.
The habits of mind might better be termed the habits of a perfected mind since most have not acquired all of these habits. The two selected for this paper are persistence and precision. Both are difficult to embed because they require disciple and mental toughness. This paper discusses the connection between the two and how they can be defeated if a student is distracted from them.
The Mindfulness Exercise used in the role play was the Imagery Relaxation. I found the technique to come natural to me because I have been practicing Buddhism for fourteen years, lived in a Buddhist Center for one year, and studied at the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the Mayo Clinic where I took the eight week Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Course designed by John Kabat-Zinn. My past experiences enabled me to feel comfortable integrating this technique into the session with the client more naturally. The practice wisdom acquired from my past, provided a strong platform to implement the exercise in a more fluid way, first by guiding the client through visual scene and then asking him to guide himself through a relaxing scene of his choice. By the time he guided himself, he
Habits of the Heart, a book written by Robert N. Bellah, Richard Madsen, William M. Sullivan, Ann Swidler, and Steven M. Tipton, introduce four traditions that contribute to making up a culture. The first tradition is the biblical tradition followed by the republican tradition , the utilitarian individualism and expressive individualism. All four of these traditions combine to make up the culture in which everyone in the world lives. My ideal culture would consist of 40% of the republican tradition, 30% of utilitarian individualism, 25% of expressive individualism, and 5% of the biblical tradition. I believe that if each of these traditions is given the proportions I listed above, the society will be able to grow and prosper
My excitement towards the results was so contagious that my behavior of “attempting” permanently spread out to all areas of my academic and personal life. I soon found myself making a “goals journal” for every little objective I wanted to achieve. I turned this book into a dart-board full of targets I wanted to hit, like: "Learn 50 Shakespearean words by the end of Romeo and Juliet" and "Run a mile under 7 minutes by end of
I really need to get back my energy and be a healthy person. I have to change my bad eating habit, and I know I can change this habit while I believe it. In “The Golden Rule of Habit” Charles Duhigg talked about the habit loop and how to change a habit; he said the habit can be changed, but people must believe that the change is possible and find an alternative routine (92). For example, he said if you want to quit smoking, figure out a different routine that will satisfy the cravings filled by cigarettes, and find group of people or someone was a former smoker who can help you to stay away of nicotine by giving you ideas like what to do instead of smoking to have the same reward (92). For me, eating sweets and unhealthy for every day make me feel happy, but in the same time thy make me get fat, and don’t have energy. So, I agree with Duhigg that I can create a healthy pattern of behavior by changing my routine which is my
If a bad habit really affects your daily routines, why don’t you change it ? Having able to know and read all time New York Times bestseller is extremely essential. In The Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg’s masterpiece, I could distinguish my bad habits and flip it over to a good one. The only habit that I want to change is procrastination. Lack of support and effort on how to vanish that habit is really describing my current situation.
One habit of mind Mark has is "Taking Responsible Risks". This habit of mind helps him being stranded on Mars, without any help and surely thinking he won't make it till Ares 4. Even though there are many other habits of mind he could have but this one fits for me during this reading.
My works meets curiosity of “Habits of Mind” from the CWPA “Framework” document”. In both of my works, I demonstrated curiosity by conducting research and discovering more about my surrounding and myself. In “Discourse Community”, I conducted a research on programming group and discovered that my computer design group is not simply a group but a community that work toward common goals with many aspects of a discourse community described by Swales. In “Analysis of Study Habits”, I researched my study habit and its correlation with grade and I discovered different study habits and how they affect grade. This information allows me to change my study habit and get a better grade in my class. This meets the curiosity requirement because
Three habits of mind I have used effectively in my first year of college are being open to new ideas, being flexible, and being persistent. These habits of mind have helped me with various assignments this past year. I hope to further develop additional habits of mind, such as being more engaged, to help me reach my full academic potential.
I walked into the school. My parents were right behind me, and I tried to keep my breathing at a normal pace. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. I can do this. I told myself. It was the day of the audition — my audition — for the Regional Arts Program, more specifically the visual arts section. I didn’t think I’d even make it to the front door of the school, and yet here I was.
