The case of Hae Min Lee was originally only prominent within Baltimore County of Maryland. It has the trappings of a typical high school murder; a teen is angry at their ex-boyfriend/girlfriend for breaking up with them and as a result, would murder them. However, the case has gained international attention largely due to the investigations from ‘Serial’, which revealed an abnormal number of inconsistencies within the case against Adnan Syed. Eventually, this attention culminated into the granting of a new trial for Adnan. Adnan is most likely guilty because of circumstantial evidence and testimony from other witnesses that demonstrate probable cause for Adnan to murder Hae. Circumstantial evidence is good enough to convict someone if it can …show more content…
Although, some may argue that Adnan is innocent because Jay’s story is inconsistent.
First, according to Adnan, his romantic relationship with Hae was akin to a stereotypical high school romance. And when they broke up, he understood her decision and respected it. However, according to Hae’s diary, which was presented in Adnan’s second trial, Hae was exasperated by Adnan’s possessiveness and his childish attempts to make her jealous. This suggests that the relationship between Adnan and Hae was abnormal, as Adnan was possessive of Hae and wanted to make her jealous to force her to keep clinging on to him, demonstrating that Adnan was untruthful about his relationship with Hae so as to prevent suspicion that he was slightly abusing her. Furthermore, in an additional note to Adnan from Hae, she expresses disbelief that Adnan refuses to respect her decision to break up with him. This challenges the idea that Adnan always respected Hae’s decision to break up with him. Although this is note is from

This single request has multiple implications. For starters, this corroborates with Jay’s story because according to him, Adnan’s plan was to board Hae’s car in order to be close enough to strangle her to death. Furthermore, this request makes absolutely no sense in the context in Adnan’s other various statements. Adnan’s car was already in his possession during the time he made this request because of the fact he, according to him, loaned his car to Jay during the free period at his school, so clearly, Adnan did not need a ride from Hae during this time. This only leaves a couple of options, all of which are unfavorable to Adnan. He either wanted to murder her, or wanted to have a private talk with her, which doesn’t not remotely make any sense, considering he could have talked to her later in private, like somewhere in the school that is secluded, give her a written note, or talked to her on the phone. Moreover, according to Adnan he lent his car and phone to Jay so he could pick him up after track practice, so it would make no sense for Adnan Thus, his request to Hae for a ride is a sign that Adnan did indeed wanted to kill
He wasn 't. I was like he 's a p...I 'm trying to conv-- explain I’m seventeen, like “He 's a player! He has a lot of girls!”” (Episode 2: The Breakup p. 37). Undoubtedly, Koenig asserts an exceptional point, Adnan is popular among the females in his school and he most likely isn’t completely devastated by their breakup. Although he was a bit emotional, he moved on. Others also advocated a similar statement, “But nearly everyone I’ve spoke with, Adnan’s friends and teachers say he took the breakup like anyone would. Adnan’s friend Mac Francis said Adnan initially was devastated and jealous about the new boyfriend. Said he grumbled about it in a typical guy way, nothing strange. Everyone I talked to said some version of this, that he wasn’t rage filled or vindictive. He was just sad” (Episode 2: The Breakup p. 36). Sarah Koenig asked many people and none of them announced anything extreme between Adnan and Hae after their breakup. After analyzing these pieces of evidence, one can infer the claim of being upset over Hae isn’t verified through anyone. Another component to Adnan’s innocence would be Asia McClain and the library.
Given Adnan's prior calls to Hae, this lack of communication had added suspicions about his potential involvement in her murder, as he avoids and distances himself from her after the crime. This is quite a notable change in behavior, aligning with the timeline of the murder and disappearance. It is recognizable that Jay could be an unreliable source being that “Jay has told his story six
There has been a lot of speculation and internal conflict as to who committed Hae’s murder. At some points, I thought that surely Adnan had done it. However at other points, there was no way that he had killed her. Based on the lack of physical evidence against him, I do not believe that Adnan committed the murder.
Firstly, the Nisha call placed Adnan with Jay after the murder. This call could have been a butt-dial that rang for 2 minutes. The call could have been from Adnan, who wanted to make Jay talk with Nisha. The Nisha call does not prove Adnan killed Hae, as it simply just puts him with Jay at the time. Also, the prosecution stated that Adnan was constantly doing bad things. Everyone does bad things, but it does not make them murderers. Finally, Jay knew the location of Hae’s car. The fact that Jay knew the location of Hae’s car should arouse suspicion on him. The evidence utilized by the prosecution is circumstantial and can be disproved, and the lack of strong evidence proves Adnan’s
What does it take to solve a mystery? The case involves the tragic death of Hae Min Lee and her boyfriend, Adnan Syed, who was accused of her murder, but i believe that Adnan Syed is innocent for the murder of Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed is innocent of the murder of Hae Min Lee says he doesn’t remember that day really well. Adnan Syed does answer some questions, and Jay Wilds is a criminal. Adnan Syed is innocent for the murder of Hae Min Lee for these reasons.
Everything about this case has my head just as muddled as the facts, or perhaps the “so-called” facts. Where do we decide that the blurred line of coincidence between the lie and the truth has been crossed? And which side does the case rest? Did the community, the family, the jury, the judge, and Hae Min Lee get justice? Or lock up an innocent man? I have always been the on-the-fence type of person, choosing sides is a game I normally don’t take part in, but this case has me wishing I could just choose a side. That it could be as simple as proven guilty (or innocent) beyond reasonable doubt. There seems to be no such thing as reasonable doubt in this case, the facts are muddled, and some things just don’t seem to add up on both sides of the matter.
My verdict is Adnan Syed is innocent of the murder of Hae Min Lee. I reached this verdict after analyzing the evidence and determining that there was a reasonable doubt that he committed the murder. The following pieces of evidence showed he was not linked to the crime: The first piece of evidence talks about the lack of physical proof.
We believe that Jay is guilty. In the next five minutes we will prove to you that Adnan is in fact innocent and why Jay should be in jail. Adnan was close friends with Jay’s girlfriend Stephanie which is what we believe Jay’s motive was to murder Hae. The court convicted Adnan of the murder with the motive of being jealous of Hae’s new relationship. We argue that the motive of jealousy was what made Jay kill Hae Min Lee.
What would you do if a convicted criminal’s guilt was being questioned? Would you have the urge to let your inner detective shine? If you are one of those people, the perplexity of this murder would be right up your alley. On January 13, 1999, in Baltimore, Maryland, 18-year old high school senior Hae Min Lee mysteriously disappeared after school, leaving her family and friends worried. Weeks later, on February 9, 1999, the innocent young woman’s body was found buried in Leakin Park. Many people, including the whole state of Maryland, pointed fingers at Adnan Syed. Syed comes from a traditional Muslim family, yet he did “American teen-like” things, such as dating and going to
Physical evidence was extremely lacking, and all DNA tests conducted were clear of Syed’s DNA. Therefore, it is more than likely that Syed is innocent. The evidence, or lack thereof, presented in the case of Adnan Syed v. State of Maryland proves that Adnan Syed is not guilty of the murder of Hae Min Lee.

Jay was a “drug dealer who worked in a porn video store” (Alvim 15). He ran an “operation out of [his] grandmother’s house...had a lot more on the line than just a few bags of weed”(Vargas-Cooper). Indisputably, Jay was a delinquent unlike Adnan, an esteemed Muslim teen referred to as the “community’s golden child”(Zaman 3). The law enforcement’s trust in Jay’s words is inconceivable; Jay is pathological liar and hooligan that has incessantly broken the law. Jay is dishonest even towards his own friend, Jenn. “When [Jenn] asked [Jay] if he was involved in the crime in any way he denie[d] it stating that even though Adnan asked for his help to bury Hae’s body, he did not help him, he only took Adnan somewhere in the city and dropped him off”(Alvim 15). Indeed, Jay seems to be minimizing his participation in the crime in order to protect himself. An innocent man would not have massive inconsistencies in his story. The discrepancies in Jay’s testimony have concealed the truth, causing for the State to have a clouded judgement on the Adnan’s
From the advertisement and information given by the sellers, we find that there are several factors when it comes to the question of whether or not the representation was made recklessly without the knowledge of its truth and as a positive assertion. The sellers disclosed the information that the home had been previously divided and rented into a two family dwelling which would lead one to think that it was in fact a duplex. Despite the layout of the home and reliance of fact from the previous ownership, now the sellers were also under the
With the State’s defense crumbling without Jay’s testimony, what is the evidence against Adnan? There is physical evidence linking him to the murder, that is undisputable. So what does the state have? A palm print of Adnan’s on the back of an Atlas but not on the most incriminating page is about it for the State. If we stripped this case of Jay and all the “maybe” evidence you’re left with motive. It’s simple because Adnan didn’t have one. He was friends with Hae, Adnan was civil towards her and her new boyfriend, and he himself had already moved on as well. If we put this case back together and include all the so-called evidence then we need an alibi for
