Halo Effect of Attractiveness on Altruistic Behaviors
1. Introduction/Overview
a. The current study of research seeks to identify the effects of an individual’s physical appearance on the altruistic behaviors of strangers.
b. Those who are considered physically attractive by societal norms are often stereotyped as highly intelligent individuals who have positive characteristics. However, those who are considered unattractive are often stereotyped as unintelligent disagreeable individuals.
c. How much of an effect does an individual’s physical appearance relates to their ability to receive assistance from strangers?
d. This research will be utilized to inform the public if physical attractiveness is still a pervasive issue within society.
2. Literature Review

A study conducted by Rohner and Rasmussen (2012) sought to identify if stereotypes such as intelligence is attributed to an individual’s physical attractiveness. Specifically, if by analyzing an individual’s facial features, whom they are deemed as attractive, if the thought was previously implanted in their mind by previous encounters. This was accomplished by associating words with faces of individuals who were identified then categorized as attractive, moderately attractive or unattractive. Researchers for this study also included reminders under one of the conditions in order to control prejudice. Results of the study indicate that physical attractiveness is a difficult stereotype to influence.
