The play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, is set in an anti-feminist era. Women traditionally have been seen inferior to men. This was an intellectual as well as a physical issue. Women were to raise a family, cook, clean, be pretty and not be smarter than any man. The main characters Ophelia and Gertrude are both depicted with these characteristics as powerless and frail people. This illustration of helpless women affects one's understanding of what their true selves could be.

What if there is more depth to these two? Ophelia and Gertrude do seem to portray these poor characteristics so it may confuse readers. Maybe they are just restrained from their potential. It really is not their fault that they are so helpless because they are put down by men, and have been trying to conform to this type of society their whole life. It shows the history of a male dominated world where women were at a complete disadvantage just because of their sex. If the two characters lived in a more present time, they most likely would be stronger independent women. Ophelia and Gertrude would not have been seen as so miniscule.

Ophelia was in a bad situation throughout the play, leaving her without much control of her life. She was not able to fix things between her and Hamlet because Polonius, her father, prohibited her from seeing him. She was subject to the rule of her father above all else.
