Early 1990’s was a difficult time, especially for the south central. During 1991 and 19992 was the worst record for crime; the murder rate was the highest in LA in history. There were about 1077 murders many of which came from gang violence in south central. The match that set off the 1992 LA Riots. Was the videotape of Rodney King being brutally beaten by five police officers, as well as the murder of Latasha Harlins in 1991. The officers were found not guilty by a mostly white jury, so the African American grew angry and disappointed. White people were the main targets, but Koreans also experienced gun battles

Carrie Amelia Moore thought that drinking caused most of the problems in the world. She was against alcohol and she started trying to get it to be banned. Carrie is known for carrying a hatchet with her that helped her smashed public places. She kept thinking that god wanted her to travel around and get people to see the way she saw the problems of alcohol. She did speeches, used violence, and she was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union who was known most from all of the other people who were in there..

Mary Sorrells was born on December 23, 1963 at Kings Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Virginia. She was the middle child in a family of four brothers, and four sisters. At the age of eighteen, she graduated high school, and worked in a factory while obtaining a nursing license. On September 3, 1983, she married Gary Spangler in a Pentecostal church in Staunton, Virginia. Thirteen years later, on March 12, 1997, Mary gave birth to her first child (Jacob) at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where our journey begins. So, after fifty-one years of maturing into a wise adult, this is what this five foot tall woman is today.

In the small town of Dickinson in Texas, on August 9th 1990, 8-year-old Jennifer Schuett was abducted by Dennis Earl Bradford. After being taken straight from her bed through her bedroom window, Bradford attempted to calm Schuett by reassuring her he was an undercover officer. Bradford then strangled, raped and lacerated Shuett’s neck, leaving her to bleed out in a field. Shuett recalls him asking her “Am I scaring you little girl? Am I scaring you?” Schuett was left helpless and immobile until she was found by children playing a game of tag. Bradford was not identified or arrested for his actions until 19 years later. However, before he could be tried, Bradford committed suicide in his jail cell.

Laura S. Haviland risked her own life trying to make a difference for the lives of others. She was not very concerned about what would happen to her, she just wanted to make sure others were getting what she thought they deserved. She was an abolitionist and a writer. Throughout her life she was devoted to helping people in many different ways, spending much of her life doing different activities that involved helping people, most importantly slaves and their families. These were things she never had to do, but chose to do. She took it upon herself to spend her life doing this. One of the biggest things she devoted her life to was the underground railroad. She also helped to make big improvements for African Americans. This almost cost her, her life, but she kept going and helping. Without Laura Haviland's demanding work and dedication Michigan would not have made such drastic improvements as they did during this time. Hannah Senesh was born in Budapest, Hungary, on July 17, 1921. She had a younger brother and her parents were an author and a journalist. She was always very talented in writing. Throughout her life, she kept a diary and wrote many poems. She was Jewish, and in 1939, she moved to Israel with her brother because of anti-semitism in Hungary. In Israel, she attended an agricultural school, and later settled at the Kibbutz Sdot Yam. Hannah Senesh was brave, and stood her ground for what she thought was right. She did what she knew what good for other people, even if it hurt her.

When a child receives an emotional wound, it often creates an ‘infection’ that they must spend their lives overcoming and growing beyond. Mary Karr lived through a very difficult childhood and adolescence, and her reaction to it and attempts to escape from the pain caused a self-perpetuating cycle of pain and addiction in her life. Eventually, she realized that her dependency on alcohol was hurting her son and causing her to act like her mother, so she, reluctantly, turned to others and eventually the Lord for help. She learned to pray and submit instead of depend on herself and it radically changed her life. She never would have expected it when she was young, but over time praying became as necessary to her as breathing.
