To the Hannam Scholarship Selection Committee,
Currently, our world is transforming rapidly to be more accepting of differences and learning to celebrate what makes people unique. This occurred through small strategic wins around the globe when people fought for what they believed in. I have faith that everyone can positively impact the people around them in a meaningful manner. Combining my past experiences and my aspiration to better the world, my dream is to go into the medical field. I would like to do research and study the human nervous system, searching for and finding a way to cure neurological disorders. I have prepared myself through science classes, AP exams, attending health/medical conferences, and volunteering at the Eagle Ridge Hospital, always pushing myself to excel at everything I tried. I received high marks alongside 5s on every AP exam I took. This past December, I was even chosen to attend the Mini-Med Operations Conference which took place at the BC Children’s Hospital. There, I learned about the world of surgery and how surgeons can aid developing countries. It covered topics such as Global Surgery and mental health.

For many who don’t truly understand the disorders, it seems that the person is simply not trying hard enough to heal. However, many of these diseases – including Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, and depression – have no plausible treatments or permanent fixes. Having known someone who struggles with Tourette’s and ADHD, I truly believe that once these predisposed mindsets are changed and a form of treatment is found, our world will be a much happier
While growing up, there are innumerable decisions to be made and paths to take. As I am approaching the ending point of my high school career, I have finally found the correct one for me. I have known from a surprisingly young age that I wish to pursue a job in the medical field, and have taken a number of steps to help achieve this dream. I show tremendous passion for both my educational and career goals, and how to reach them. My future is incredibly important to me because through doing my job, I will also be achieving my biggest goal: saving lives.
I have had the opportunity while volunteering at M.E.N.D to be exposed to the various low-income patients with no health insurance and do not have the privilege of Medicare or Medical benefits. It came to my attention the lack of leaders within health care in underserved communities. There is a need of removal of barriers created by language and lack of knowledge of cultures and heritages that address the specific needs of the underserved. Since then, it has become my ultimate goal to become a leader in health care in underserved communities I plan to become an Orthopedic Surgeon and provide services to those who are unfortunate and cannot afford procedures. I plan to first earn a B.A. degree in Psychology at California State University of
During the year of 2014 there were an estimated 112,600 architects employed and approximately 20% were self-employed. Architects have a high competition for jobs and job positions are estimated to increase seven percent each year (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Degrees for this field of study can be found at many colleges including Kansas State University. Kansas State is a great college that is full of opportunities for scholarships and has a wide variety of clubs and degrees.
Last year, I was allowed the privilege to be apart of the REH program. I was able to learn a lot and focus on my future. Up to the point of REH, I’ve done many camps focused on veterinary medicine and human medicine. While in the program, I learned and grew in my knowledge about my future. After completing the REH program, that I found very interesting, I knew I wanted to pressure a career in pediatric surgery. I decided after this program that my passion wasn’t in animals, but I have so much fun dealing with children and surgery. I’ve had a love for science from a young age. I aspire to become a renown surgeon in the Untied States. For when you hear the name, Joshua Lewis, you can know that REH had an effect on my career. Ultimately, I hope
In fact, throughout the years, I have wanted to be nearly every kind of doctor that there is: family practitioner, pediatric surgeon, neurosurgeon, cardiac surgeon, oncologist, and so on. However, for the last three years, I have been intent on becoming a pediatric surgeon. The thought of saving children’s lives someday has motivated me to excel not only in my school work, but also in every extra-curricular activity I participate in. Over the past four years, I have overcome every obstacle and trial set before me and have accomplished many dreams that I never thought I would achieve. I ran a half marathon with some of my greatest friends, became one of the valedictorians of my graduating class, and achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout after six years of interminable work. Each of these accomplishments taught me one invaluable lesson; I can achieve anything that I set my mind too. Unfortunately, the road to achieve my goal of becoming a surgeon is long, arduous, and costly. With mounds of debt in the foreseeable future, my parents and I are diligently searching for scholarships to help me along the way. That is why it would be an honor to receive the American Legion Scholarship; so that I can once again overcome the odds and achieve my impossible
Have you ever closed your eyes and could still see a perfect picture? Well, believe it or not at that very moment a dream is created. My personal aspiration in life is not be the most popular or the best dressed, yet it is to be happy doing the thing I feel most passionate about. It is my personal belief that it will take skill, dedication, and passion for the world of health care to impact my community. The arena of study I wish to be knowledgably in is health care administrator. It is my goal to work for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, there I would like to use the experience and knowledge to aid in creating a better tomorrow. I do not want to claim that I will have knowledge on all subjects that cross my path, yet I will remain a humble
There are two things that I am passionate about: science and helping others. My dream is to get an MD-PhD. The dual degree will allow me to do research and helping people at the same time. I had the opportunity to visit Vietnam in the past, and I got to see what my country looks like. During the trip, I learned that the healthcare system in Vietnam is corrupted. If you have money, then the hospitals will take a good care of you, but if you are poor, you will be ignored and forgotten. This is situation my people face every day, and this motivated me to become a doctor. In the near future, I want to go back to my country from time to time to provide medical care for the poor who can’t afford proper treatments. I also want to participate in Doctors
I took my goal of being a doctor and harnessed it into one increasingly filled with passion. Classes like AP Biology and Anatomy became indescribably engrossing and progressively applicable to my future career. Today, I still aim to be able to care for patients the way I was cared for during my illness. Along with this, I am not restricting myself to only this pathway. I did not have to look too far to see the multitude of calamities affecting our world today--terrorism, shootings, epidemics, corruption, poverty. The list seemed never-ending, but I decided that I had to do something. If I waited for the “perfect moment”, it would never
I have always been a goal oriented and reaching-for-the-stars individual. Medicine not only excites and thrills me but has become a part of me that I am dedicated to and passionate about. Everyday changes in medicine are improving the healthcare of patients and I want to become a part of your surgical family to be intrinsically involved in these changes. I look forward to starting a residency program that will help mold and provide me with the skills necessary to become a great surgeon. I am committed and conscientious to everything I set my mind on and education plays a major and continuing role in my lifestyle. In addition to my daily commitment to my patients, I am interested in performing research to help develop new techniques and treatments. Surgery has become a high tech medicine, and the best surgeons are the ones that reach out a hand of encouragement to their patients to gain their confidence
As I reached high school, reality hit me. I was destined to be in the medical world, but I wanted to participate as soon as possible. I wanted to start caring for patients within the next few years, but that would not be possible until
Since childhood, I’ve aspired to become a physician to alleviate the pain of others by helping them through medicine. Currently, I’m not sure which specialty I want to pursue, but in 10 years I want to have completed medical school and residency and started working to give back to society through medicine.
I wish to pursue a career as a Surgeon, a professional who operates on a patient to treat the injuries or illness they have, for the adrenaline rush, extraordinary reward, and great benefits. I’ve been interested in this career since I was very little, I would always play doctor with my siblings. Another important reason why I want to be in the medical field as a surgeon is when my brother was very young he had open heart surgery. My mom is in the medical field, she’s an Echo Tech and I look up to her and want to be like her. The thing that interested me the most about this career is that I would be saving lives, helping people in need, and making the world a healthier place. Being in the medical field would give me a
My proposed project to promote the Gilman Scholarship and International education would be to create a scripted journal. This journal would be filled with practicing of my experiences of what I will learn in a different country. I hope to present scripted journal with friends, staff, and others at my home school as well to others to the international program center as a way to promote my studying and career choice in a different region. My artistic careers are an easy way to catch people’s attention, so the goal will be for students to be interested in the arts and course be interested in studying abroad. The target population would be the students in the other country. Most students would focus on more pictures, demonstrations, and
Born into a family of engineers and accountants, a career in medicine did not immediately strike me as the obvious choice until high school. Being a recreational gymnast for most of my life, I have always been fascinated with human anatomy. However, I discovered my interest in science after taking an advanced biology class with a dissection component which made me awestruck, appreciate the anatomy and made me want to study the physiology of the body at the molecular scale. Dissections demanded a precision which enticed the artist in me. While still in high school in India, I discovered that I exceptionally enjoyed being with people and making them feel better in any capacity whether it was volunteering with blood drives or a school for deaf and speech impaired children. It struck me that there was a vast need for people to be in every corner of the earth helped whether they were ill, homeless, or depressed and lonely.
Words are not enough for me to express my gratitude for having the opportunity to apply for this scholarship. For so long in my life, I never knew what I wanted to do or who I wanted to become. I would constantly worry about the future and beat myself up for not being clear in my dreams. One thing for sure, is that I wanted to make a big difference in my own small way.
