The lines between good and evil are clearly opposite concepts, yet the two sides can easily be blurred or even converted. This idea is explored in the first episode of Hannibal between the film’s main protagonist and antagonist, Will Graham and Hannibal Lector. Will Graham is first introduced as a criminal profiler that is gifted with “pure empathy” and that allows him to fully embody the mind and perspective of anyone, including killers. He is known to be the best of the best at catching the worst psychopaths and this ability of his impresses many of those around him. He is represented as the good in this film. On the other side, the evil is represented by Hannibal Lector. When his character was first introduced, he is doing his job as a psychiatrist …show more content…
Will and Hannibal are on the same team that were enlisted to aid in the capture of murderers. This act places the two of them as good. The two are very similar in that they can both psychoanalyze others and think in ways that normal people do not. Their attention to detail is what allows the two of them to understand what others can not, including themselves. Since this shows that Hannibal can easily blur the line into good, Will also blurs the line into evil. At the start of the episode, he has never killed anybody but by the end, he does kill someone. Even though it was justified, he is traumatized by it because he sees killing as killing. It’s during this that he may start to see himself going toward the dark side. This is further established during the scene where Hannibal offers food to Will, which was implied to the audience that it contained human meat. Just like that, it implies that Hannibal is slowly trying to convert Will onto his evil side. It also can be said that it’s impossible for someone like Will to not have have even a little bit of evil in him, given his gift. He is able to see the perspective of every kind of person, even the murder kind that he does not want to. This shows that he may have every bit of good and evil within
It is a very arguable subject on whether or not people are born with good intentions, and therefore taught by others the ‘evil’ side of their personality. Whether it is the absence of ethical conduct in human nature, or just the way one perceives a situation, evil seems to be prominent in our everyday lives. Humans seem to have a moral code that follows them with every decision they make, yet despite the laws of morality and society, people of this world still seem to behave inhumanely because of the act of self-preservation, human interest, and who exactly the authority figure is at the time.
Good versus Evil is an important concept. Evil sometimes overcomes our good but never exceeds good. The difference between evil and good is that good is an ability to have empathy and compassion towards other people. Evil is people who are selfish, self-absorbed and don’t have empathy towards others. Literature plays a vital role in developing concepts of good and evil and effectively portrays the morals of its time period. In the novels Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the authors explore the human nature of good and evil in men from different perspectives of Dracula, Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll.
The purpose of the paper is to address ethical concerns in the book Concussion, written by Jeanne Marie Laskas. The paper will present a summary of the work, statement of an ethical question, enumeration of ethical concerns, discussion of the data used in the decision making, evaluation of the options, discussion of what legal, moral, and ethical actions can be taken to address the ethical question raised in the book, and a conclusion of a summary on what is ethically desirable.
Overall, Will has had a troubling life, never feeling like he actually belonged. He was afraid to be smart and at the same time afraid to not be. The physical and mental abuse he suffered at the hands of those who are supposed to protect him, definitely scared him
Will uses anger, denial, and sarcasm as defense mechanisms to push people away from him. He told people that he did not have a problem and that they were the ones with the problem. He used
Will is defensive towards everyone he comes in contact with. He experiences incongruence with his cockiness of being smarter than most but he doesn't feel he deserves better than living as a nobody.
Stevenson is trying to tell us that everybody has evil inside of them and has a curiosity about their darker side.
In the film, Good Will Hunting, the main character, Will Hunting, is a gifted mathematician who struggles to find a productive and fruitful life. Throughout the film, Will displays outstanding and one-of-a-kind abilities in the field of mathematics. However, his emotional and social intelligence falls far behind his intellectual intelligence. With a rap sheet stocked full with assault and aggression, Will must navigate himself through life by learning to trust, love, and learn.
These being: family, schools, peer relationships, mass media, and work. Throughout the film, we see the growth of character in Will. He begins in the movie as the mishap trouble maker with a brilliant mind that’s being wasted because his inner demons are holding him hostage. Through the progression of his time in therapy, we can tell that will did not have the best home life. We discover that he was a victim of child abuse, both physical and mental. Because of this, he grows up believing that he is not worth much and will not amount to anything. Family is a big part of the way we grow up to perceive ourselves and present ourselves to others. Wills family did not show him that he was good enough so he believed he wasn’t and found solace in his school work. With the help of his peer relations and school, Will was “re-socialized” and succeeded beyond what he could have ever imagined. With the help of this therapist and time, Will resolved the resentment and attachment issues he has had since he was a child and begin to form new relationships while allowing others into his mind a bit more. This change in his life was all brought on by the professor teaching him. If he hadn’t intervened with the court and suggest that in place of jail time, Will could study under him and see a therapist, will would have never gotten better and advance much further in life. With the help of peer relations and school, will became a new and improved
Will Hunting also uses the defense mechanism of being extremely smart and by reading people and exploiting their weaknesses to shift their focus away from him. This would be a characteristic of the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder avoidance state, where he is dealing with it throughout the movie, which causes him to stay withdrawn from people and society (NCBI). Will uses manipulation to change the subjects and focus’ of others from himself. He is also sarcastic when he talks. Such examples include the several psychologists who he visited before he found Sean. He would read their books before he met with them to decipher the way they worked. Then, when he worked with the psychologists, he would exploit their weakness and what they were uncomfortable with and push it right into their faces. He would also use sarcasm to make a point that he thought all of these psychologist meetings were useless to him and pointless.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s Novella “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, good vs. evil is the biggest theme. This story is seen as a metaphor about the good and evil in everyone, and the struggle of the two sides in everyone’s personality. Since Hyde starts to take over, I could argue that evil is stronger than good. But, Mr. Hyde ends up dying in the end of the story, so I could claim that the good of someone can overcome the evil in you. Overall, Stevenson is trying to communicate with the reader about the balance of good and evil in humans, also that your balance of good and evil has different results/effects in your life.

Good Will Hunting explains story of a young man who goes by the name of Will Hunting. He is a very intelligent man who has had a troubled life and lets it control him day to day. He doesn’t want anybody to know about his talents because he thinks they’ll think differently about him and he doesn’t want to get hurt. Like Will, almost all of us in college and even in life go through blocks of trouble, big or small, in our life and can relate to him. I myself can relate to Will in many aspects of his life.
Graham presents a chance for a romantic connection, as well as a chance for Lecter to find someone who understands him. Lecter’s fascination with Graham may originate from him discovering a younger mirror image of himself, and the opportunity to toy with this younger version and get inside his head. Fuller states, “Hannibal sees something in Will Graham that he also sees in himself. They're both unique and they're crazy" (Fuller). Over the show, Graham slowly starts losing grip on his reality but FBI Special Agent, Jack Crawford, sees Graham’s empathy disorder as something he can use to help others so he keeps Graham on the team.
To understand evil we must first understand the concept that good and evil are term or words referring to what one given individuals believes to be the right and wrong thing to do. Good, many times
