There are not too many things that I know about American Literature as a whole; however, I might even surprise myself with what I do know. What American Literature encompasses, in my opinion, is any piece of literature that has sentimental, spiritual, or historical value to modern readers. I have been unable to study many examples of American Literature so far as I have never had a class that was completely dedicated to the subject. Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway, and Theodore Roethke are the main American authors I was able to study in my high school English classes.

It is explained that Anderson was “the son of a poor cobbler and a washerwoman,” and was “embarrassed by his proletarian background.” Andersen’s goal was to be accepted be by the upper-class, and he “regarded royalty with awe and admiration and found a special pleasure in being accepted by and associating with kings, dukes and princes, and the nobility at home and abroad” (82). It is ironic that the Collins family, who adopted him, thought that he would never achieve fame as an author (85).
Poe’s childhood was one of a kind. He was adopted at a young age and

I’m writing to you today to express my concerns regarding immigration reform. Recently, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made insulting remarks regarding Mexican immigrants stating “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” When he speaks about Mexicans he is referring to the worst stereotypes of Mexicans. The love that the two share is free from societal norms or influence. The joy of just being together and sharing themselves with one another is so great that even angels were envious of them.
Edgar Allen Poe: a name that is immediately recognizable with the literary form of poetry. Poe’s air of mystery within his works is often the focal point, with their morbid nature enchanting his readers. And yet, it is with his ponderous 1850 work, “A Dream Within A Dream”, that he blends an exposé of man’s very being with his usual cryptic touch to form a poem with ideas and feelings that twist the readers perception of reality. With “A Dream Within a Dream”, Edgar Allen Poe created metaphysical study of the human existence, utilizing evocative images and unique poetic choices to explore not only the nature of objective reality, but the emotional effects of this uncertainty on the speaker’s fragile being.
