Afterwards, Hurston earned her associate’s degree in 1920 and in 1924, she received her Bachelor’s degree in anthropology at Howard University (Flynn, Deasy, and Ruah). Similarly, while at Howard University, Hurston became “one of the earliest initiates of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and co-founded The Hilltop, the University's student newspaper” (“Zora Neale Hurston”). Consequently, a professor at Howard University, named Alain Locke, and poet Georgia Douglas Johnson introduced Hurston to many of the leading literary figures in what would become known as the Harlem Renaissance (“Best known for”). Hurston’s mission in the Renaissance was to glorify and preserve a form of black expression that she felt was being diluted by urbanization. Eventually, Hurston, the first African American female moved to New York to enroll at Barnard College, since she was awarded a Zeta Phi Beta Sorority National Education Foundation scholarship during the late 1920’s (“Woman have done”). Hurston became cultivated and an educated woman on the subject of anthropology with the aid of Franz Boas, who was associated with the anthropological historicism (Boyd). After Hurston graduated from Barnard College in 1928, she spent two years as a graduate student in anthropology at Columbia University (Boyd).
