During the Heineken Cup the rugby team, Harlequins, used a fake blood capsule to make it look like a mouth injury was sustained by Tom Williams. The previous director of the Harlequins, Dean Richards, “in order to facilitate a tactical substitution for Nick Evans to re-enter the field, having gone off earlier injured” (Bloodgate), Richards decided to go through with what is now known as the Bloodgate Scandal. The action committed resulted in “a twelve-month ban for Williams (reduced to 4 months on appeal), a three-year ban for former director of rugby Dean Richards and a two-year ban for physiotherapist Steph Brennan as well as a £260,000 fine for the club”(Bloodgate). The Harlequins broke the substitution rule of only allowing substitutions
