In J.K. Rowling 's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer 's Stone, the last four archetypes discussed in Christopher Vogler 's The Writer 's Journey are the shapeshifter, shadow, ally and trickster. These archetypes are represented by a number of characters but, primarily: Professor Snape, the shapeshifter; Voldemort and Professor Quirrell, the shadows; Hermione and Ron, the allies; Fred and George, the tricksters. Shapeshifter The role of the shapeshifter in this story is Professor Snape, of course, and Professor Quirrell. Christopher Vogler states that the function of the shapeshifter is “bringing doubt and suspense into a story. When heroes keep asking, 'Is he faithful to me? Is [he] going to betray me? ... Shadow Now Voldemort, although not the only, was the ultimate shadow of the hero’s story. He is the ever-present threat which continually drives the hero to improve, “[challenging] the hero and [giving him] a worthy opponent in the struggle” (Vogler 66). Though he is not physically present until the climax of the story, from the beginning Harry is warned about Voldemort, even about speaking his name, as he is referred by anyone who has heard of him as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” (Rowling 85). As mentioned above, the second, more present shadow is revealed to be Professor Quirrell who secretly and repeatedly makes attempts on Harry’s life in Voldemort’s name; first with the troll he set loose on the castle, then again with Harry’s cursed broom (Rowling 172, 189). Voldemort and Quirrell play the roles of Harry’s “external shadows [who] must be vanquished or destroyed by the hero” (Vogler 68). Although not yet officially designated the savior, Harry takes it upon himself to stop the most dangerous wizard in his world, and anyone else who threatens himself and his friends.
