Harry S Truman was the 33rd president of the United States. He was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. He was born into the family of Martha Ellen Truman and John Anderson Truman; his father was a mule trader as well as a farmer. Harry was named after his uncle, Harrison Young. After his parents couldn’t decide on a middle name they settled with just the letter “S”. He grew up on his father’s farm in Independence, Missouri and attended Independence High School (now William Chrisman High School). Since he did not attend college, he had several jobs coming out of high school. Truman was known across the nation and world as a successful senator, vice president, and a war-loving president. Truman first worked as a railroad construction timekeeper. After that, he was a clerk for two separate banks each located in Kansas City. When he wasn’t thrilled with that lifestyle he returned home to help his family on the farm and eventually joined the National Guard. The passion for him to join the National Guard arose with World War I. However, he could have been exempt from the draft due to farming, but instead he began to organize his regiment. His regiment was called into service in the 129th Field Artillery. When he was in France, Truman was promoted to Captain and received the assignment to battery D that didn’t have a very good reputation.
