Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay officials in the U.S in 1977 who was unjustly assassinated because of jealousy and his lifestyle;however, others that disagree with his choices think he deserved to die. Harvey Milk was murdered do to political reasons and differences in opinion. Some people argue that he was murdered instead of assassinated. Harvey Milk and his assassinator, Dan White both served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors alongside each other. In the beginning, Milk and White were friends and got along well. This changed when Milk was against a zoning bill pushed by White. White then became the only supervisor to vote against Harvey Milk’s gay-rights ordinance. While Milk became a national icon due to his gay rights movement, White became forgotten about. His career hit a down fall and he became depressed. This depression led him down a path of jealousy. This led White to resign from his seat because his salary of 9,600 wasnt enough to support his family. In 1955 Emmett louis Till and his brother Wheeler were living in their uncle Moses’s house for the summer. Emmett allegedly wolf whistled at a white woman one evening, and later that night was taken from his uncles home. His mother Mamie Till was then notified that her son had been kidnapped. Emmett was brutally beaten, killed and then thrown into a river left to be found later by children fishing in the river. After they found Emmetts body the sheriff arrested Roy Bryant and his half brother J.W milam for murder. On Agust 24,1955 Emmet Till a fourteen year old boy way on his way to visit his relatives in Money, Mississippi. He was charged of whistling at Carolyn Bryant who was a clerk at a grocery store. A few days later, some white men, Brayant's husband Roy and his half brother Milam took Emmet, beat him and shot him in the head. They went to court, but they lost because of an all white male jury. Emmet's open casket funeral influenced a Civil Rights Movement.

Milkman is careless when it comes to the perception of racism. He feels it doesn’t affect him in any way because of who he is, but he doesn’t even know who he is as a man or as a black man.
On November 27, 1978, former San Francisco City Supervisor Dan White assassinated newly elected supervisor Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. White's legal team claimed he was very depressed when he committed the murder. His depression began after he had given up his supervisory position because he felt the system was corrupt. Wells worked to end lynching due to a close friend of hers being lynched. As a journalist, wells went ahead and travelled the south to learn about more of these lynchings. Next she published an article on lynching that was to outrageous given the time period, this caused her to receive death threats from white males. At the time wells was traveling and had decided to stay in New York where she was recently visiting.
