Now we get into what is known as the reckless driver. A picture comes to mind of a frazzled man or woman driving a beat up Oldsmobile; cigarette dangling from the lip of their mouth, swerving in and out of traffic while others beep their horns in disapproval. This type of driver can occur when a competent driver has had a bad day and is encountering the overly cautious driver. Stereotypically this driver is younger in age and male, but I feel that the reckless driver has no set age or sex. They get so angry for the smallest of reasons that they don’t really care what they do as a result, so long as they go out in a blaze of glory. They tend to disregard most driving signs and have no qualms about risking their life or the lives of others. These are the drivers who barely apply the brake when coming to a stop, more like “tap tap and go”. My uncle Jim is a prime example of a reckless driver. At the age of 82, he drives a boat of a Cadillac, commanding the streets with his led foot and somewhat latent reactions to those around him. Try telling him to ease up or look out, and he’s bound to increase the gas flow to his V8 engine.
While the rules are easy to break, and the motorist is often the one held responsible, it is still important that all who use the road are aware of the laws and the consequences for breaking them.
When you trying to get from one place to next you may only think about getting from point A to point B. Unfortunately, not all drivers get there the same way. Also, not all drivers drive the same. You have to be caution when driving because there are some harmful and dangerous drivers coasting on the roads. You also have good driver coasting on the road as well. You may get to your next destination depending on which category you fall into. These types are reckless, distracted and slow drivers.
Dangerous driving habits result in the death of thousands of people each year; however, by taking steps to educate young drivers on dangerous habits behind the wheel; countless lives could be saved.
If you’ve had any driving experience then you know that on the road you will come across many different characters behind the wheel. For better or for worse you try not to judge these people while driving, but sometimes their foolish or horrid driving skills can’t be overlooked. Having to share the road with other people not only gives you an idea on what kind of person they are based by how they drive, but it also gives you a reason whether to be kind or a middle-finger waving driver. The most common personalities you will encounter on the road are the overly cautious “grandma” drivers, the angry drivers with “road rage”, and the clueless distracted drivers.
(Distraction) ADD or ADHD is a common disorder having the inability to pay attention. It is likely to be caused by a relative who was diagnosed, therefore having hereditary appearances. (Martin) Having a very little attention span can cause problems while in traffic. The statistics show 66% of traffic fatalities are caused by aggressive driving. The most likely group to exhibit aggressive driving are males under the age of nineteen. Out of the male side of the survey, 14.7% are distracted by eating or drinking something. 10.9% are from checking out other drivers. Only 9.5% are from conversations with a passenger. The women’s group had different distractions. The top distraction of 26.3% were kids. 16.6% was caused by putting on makeup. Combining both groups the biggest distraction was due to texting on the phone. Tailgating was the second most popular distraction with 60%. Multitasking was deemed to be a distraction by 54% of drivers. The lowest distraction was navigational issues with 9.5%. (Distracted Drivers) Stress is another factor believed to cause road rage.
Drivers come in many different types of forms, and each has their own characteristics, both positive and negative. When driving on the road, one can encounter several different kinds of drivers, which can be divided into three major categories. Those are diligent drivers, neutral drivers, and aggressive and dangerous drivers.
As more incidents of fatal motor accidents flood in and the death road toll of young people slowly increases, media moguls, concerned youths and the general community alike have expressed discontent to such reckless behaviour. In an imploring opinion piece, titled “Driving the Highway from Destruction!” (Place of publication: Ednews, Date: unknown), an astute student, Elly heart denounces such misconceptions imposed upon young people and vehemently argues for the change in public perceptions and values. In addition to this, with the two large images embedded in her article, the opinion piece suggests a clear contention: that all drivers, both young and experienced, should take greater care in ensuring our safety on the roads.
Paula Alexandra, an American actress, once said, “The cars we drive say a lot about us.” People often choose their automobiles for many different reasons. An affordable car might be the attraction. Many people spend as much money on a car as they might a home because style and statement means much to them. Others might select a car based on the comfort of the ride. This often is the case with more mature drivers. The way we choose to get from one place to the next shows our priorities and what is important to us. But along with the type of car we drive, there is something else that clearly says a lot about a person-the way they drive their vehicle. Over a period, habits are developed by drivers and these patterns set in like cement. Drivers come in a various assortment. Most automobile drivers can be classified into one of the following categories: the high-speedster driver, the cautious-defensive driver, and the reckless-distracted driver, who petrifies me the most.
In a world where there are so many vehicles driving around the streets it is very important for people to abide by traffic laws and to take precautions to ensure the safety and lives of everyone in the world. There are many different laws regarding traffic that can change depending on what country or state you are driving or even on the year, because new laws are always being created. As long as drivers remain aware of their surroundings and the law: accidents shouldn’t occur as much or as often as they do right now.
Arizona law makers took notice of the dangers that are created by aggressive drivers. The lawmakers amended the “Reckless Driving Section and amended the name of the statute 28-695 to Reckless and Aggressive Driving. Arizona statute defines aggressive driving as a situation in which a person commits a violation of speeding and at least two other traffic violations (i.e., failure to obey traffic control devices, improper passing, driving off the pavement or traveled portion of the highway, following too close, failure to yield right-of-way, or driving in a way that is an immediate hazard to another person or vehicle).” (ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY , para. 2). This was an important step allow law enforcement a tool to make the roads safer. The serious problem is we should be trying to be safer on our own.
Apart from the private sector, driver behavior is also a main cause of accidents. Director Prof Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi comment that most accidents occurred due to selfish and inconsiderate attitude, the reckless driving, indiscriminate lane switching, inability to overtake in time and dangerous overtaking (Chua, 2006). Driver nowadays seems to have very inconsiderate attitude compared with last time. Some drivers will impaired driving such as racing in the road, and due to their inconsiderate attitude, they do not care as long as they reach their destination in the shortest time. More than that, some drivers also tend to take chances to make unsafe lane changes frequently. They do not care where they are, how their action will effected other drivers, they just change their lane dangerously and unexpectedly without considerate the consequence. Moreover, there are even a small group of drivers that have deliberate obstruction, which prevent other drivers to move their vehicles. They parked in places that blocked other vehicles to move. The common places are double line, yellow box and
Driver’s behavior is crucial for road safety and traffic management. Following road rules, courtesy and patience to other road users and to the passengers, strictly observing speed limits, and keeping away from aggressive and offensive behavior are some of the ideal behavior of a responsible driver, especially to the public utility vehicles. But often times these behaviors were disregarded by the majority of the jeepney drivers earning them a non-reputable image in today’s time.
Foreign Drivers. A stereotype used daily by kiwis to discriminate against tourists, travelers and other visitors to our country who are seen driving on our roads. This stereotype even applies to people who live in New Zealand who we can identify are from a different culture or ethnicity. Obviously, the negative repercussions of foreign drivers only applies to a very small portion of that population in our country and in fact most, foreign drivers are very safe, experienced and take extra care since they are driving in an unknown environment. However, we have all heard seen and even first-hand experienced some instances of foreign driving which makes us question whether the driver actually knows how to drive a car. Sometimes a foreign driver could be so clueless and unsafe, that we question “How did they get a license in the first place”.
Driver behavior is also cited as having a negative influence on participants’ cycling experience, as it is reported that some motorists are particularly violent towards cyclists and others are unaware of them and so did not leave the necessary space. For some participants, these experiences presented a barrier to on-road cycling. Due to the volume of traffic and the driver habits, cyclists are rushing, pushing on crowed roads. One interviewee told that “I don’t think it is just specific to this Jaffna area, it is nationwide. It is the totally different way of mind-set that they have in Jaffna.
