Ten men were arrested for their participation; although one fraternity member was far more aggressive than the others, none of the ten men intervened to stop the hazing.
Use the concepts from the list below and use them to craft an in-depth explanation of possible reasons that the fraternity members would conduct and allow this abuse. For full credit, your explanation must apply the concepts, not simply define them.
Deindividuation- The college students are completely immerged in the hazing fraternity ritual and lost all sense of personal morals or character for the duration of the ritual. Foot in the door- The student trying to get in the fraternity club already engaged in this method because he already initially complied to participate
The chapter “ Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why are some fraternities more dangerous places for women?” by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade helps to shed light on why some fraternities are associated with high number of sexual assaults on women. I was surprised to learn that “frat brothers rape 300% more and 1 in 5 women are raped on campus” (Valenti, 2014) and despite these horrendous statistics fraternities are still around. So why aren’t there more stringent actions set into motion to stop sexual assaults on women on campus or better yet ban fraternities. A lot has to do with how society as a whole sets double standards with regard to gender sexuality. Men who sleep around are viewed as “studs” or a “player” and women who sleep
2- The article by Martin and Hummer , explain the practices of fraternities groups in the country and in what kind of activities their members engage in . The article illustrate how fraternities encourage different activities , such as sexual activities with women , drinking , and partying . The article argues that fraternities lack of monitoring , use of alcohol and their constant idea of competition and masculinity within the members make rape of women more probable in college campuses .The scholars argue five possible factors that could promote violent events or rape among fraternity members . The scholars argue that fraternities are extremely selected with their members , since they have a define idea of masculinity they value males
The movie, Burning Sands, is an exploration of the seriousness of hazing on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In connection to class discussion, Burning Sands is an analysis of the complexity of social influence within fraternities on a HBCU’s campus. Burning Sands follows the journey of five pledges (possible future members of the fraternity) in their final week of pledging for the fraternity, Lambda Phi (fraternity created for the movie). The “Big Brothers” (members already a part of the fraternity) complicate the final week of pledging with severe and cruel mistreatment. The pledges must decide if inclusion into Lambda Phi is worth the risk of losing dignity and pride. In the movie, Lambda Phi exert social influence on
The first main sociological question in the "Fraternities and Rape on Campus" study performed by Patricia Yancey Martin and Robert A. Hummer was, "What characteristics do fraternities have that make them prone to objectification of women and more likely to commit gang rape on college campuses and why fraternities encourage the sexual coercion of women.
In Greek fraternities, a culture that supports and encourages sexual violence thrives. My paper will focus on the relationship between the fraternity culture and lack of response that creates this life-ruining problem. The topic is important to all college students because of the lifelong consequences to both victims and perpetrators of sexual violence.
The binge drinking and partying of fraternities and sororities is now under the concern of the chapter locally and nationally. Every year there is a national hazing awareness week that every fraternity and sorority on every campus in America participates in. The only way to fix the problem is the educate people about the problem. To outweigh the heavy expense on a member’s pocket is the ability to apply for scholarships within a fraternity or sorority nationally. A Greek organization offers aid when needed and if cannot solely help look for other outlets for financial aid for a member. Organizations focus on education and give endless resources to members within the house and on campus. Members of Greek organizations have so much potential to become well-rounded individuals and being in these organizations helps them shape these potentials to achieve the most success as
When you are a part of Greek life you are popular. In professional sports, with men sports the National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major Baseball League etc., there is a history of hazing to accept new rookies into the league. Even though, the organization have dangerous activities, but ignore outrageous events they may have to endure to become part of the organization. Hazing is classified into three types subtle, violent, and harassment. Subtle hazing is mainly deception, or not having to do the same thing other new members had to do. These falls under “reasonable hazing” to others, but to me it is not. With subtle hazing when a pledge is lining up you could call a guy run a lap but referring to him as a girl. Mainly, required greeting of members in a specific manner when seen on campus. With harassment hazing is causes stress, a relative degree of discomfort, physically or emotionally, to the new members
In her article, “The Dark Power of Fraternities,” Flanagan argues that,“The also have a long, dark history of violence against their own members and visitors to their houses, which makes them in many respects at odds with the core mission of college itself.” In other words, there may be a lot of positives to fraternities; however, there are also some very serious issues that need to be dealt with and acknowledged. Because fraternities tend to get off with little punishment, it shows that the behavior is okay. Therefore, the number of injuries/deaths, assault, and rape continue to grow. For instance, a 19 year old sophomore, Amanda Andaverde, spent her first and only month at the University of Idaho. A member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, she spent a weekday with her sisters at Sigma Chi. Getting bored of continuous “drinking games” and forced flirting with an “assigned date,” Amanda left to go to another fraternity, Sigma Alpha. This is where she would fall three stories off a “sleeping porch,” and suffer traumatic brain injury. Sleeping porches are referred to as “rack rooms”. These rooms are usually found on the top floor with huge windows that stay open around the clock (Flanagan 6). Andaverde’s family filed a lawsuit against the University of Idaho, SAE, and Tri Delta. In the end, the court dismissed the case due to a “summary judgement because there was no dispute that Andaverde fell out of an open window,” and they found no proof of threatening circumstances in her presence (Flanagan 6). In other words, the court dismissed the case before it even reached a full trial, concluding that Andaverde was aware of the open window and that the university or fraternity did not have the responsibility to protect her from her own behavior. Basically, the court claimed she initiated her own accident. How can a university or fraternity blame a victim of permanent brain damage for their accident? Especially when the
Often times hazing is a big problem we see occurring in our society. Whether it is occurring within a sports team, sorority, school, friends, or even a group of co-workers, we hear about it on a relatively frequent basis. Often times hazing stories are justified by the person committing the act of hazing and over dramatized by the media. Conducting a full study on whether hazing actually exists and the multiple ways it exists can help members of our society to further understand the implications of the action. Throughout this study the definition of hazing has been explored as well as superfluous examples to prove hazing is prominent in our society and laws and actions taken against
Greek life plays a major role in colleges and universities all across the United States. Greek life allows men and women to join an organization and create a long lasting bond, as brothers or sisters, which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. College campuses explore and boast about the positive impacts that Greek life has on students as well as the community around them. However, even with fraternities and sororities being on college campuses for decades, few people outside the Greek life community have discovered the real, enduring process that it takes to become a "brother" or "sister". Throughout my research, I will be focusing on the negative effects that fraternities and sororities pose upon pledges. This includes hazing
Hazing in universities across the nation has become an increasingly dangerous ritual that is seemingly becoming more difficult to put an end to due to its development into an "underground" activity. Though a regular activity in the seventies, hazing, a possible dangerous act of initiation to a group, has now become an activity that is banned in thirty-nine states (Wagner 16). However, this ritual has not been stopped or become less severe. In fact it is becoming more dangerous. Since it has been banned, with many colleges imposing their own penalties against those participating in it, many fraternities and sororities have pursued this activity in an underground fashion. Since these groups have gone underground, some victims of these

Furthermore, fraternities are infamous for their requirement to pledge in order to join the brotherhood. Although the specific acts inflicted on pledges is known only by members of fraternity, it is commonly known that hazing is part of the initiation. The pledges have to complete a series of humiliating and sometime dangerous rituals in order to join. They could be forced to consume excessive amount of alcohols and drugs, or be physically beaten or be publicly humiliated. Little known fact, white fraternities generally use alcohol for hazing while black fraternities result to physical violence. In a survey conducted by Dr. Susan Lipkins “31% of Fraternity and sorority members agree that a significant element in an initiation rite is humiliation.” “Also, many of the Greek Leaders agree that
Hazing is defined as any action taken or any situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule and risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a group or team. Many people have become a victim of this horrific act. While it may start as a fun tradition that is performed in different groups, it can become very tragic. Hazing takes place in high schools, sports, and fraternities which has led to an increase in media attention due to victims revealing personal accounts of hazing incidents.
Hazing has often been thought to exist primarily in fraternities and sororities; many people are starting to realize the pervasiveness of these harmful rituals. In fact, a recent study by Alfred University and the NCAA found that approximately 80% of college athletes had been subjected to some form of hazing. This total comes to more than 250,000 athletes during the 1998-99 school year alone. Half were required to participate in drinking contests or alcohol related initiations while two thirds were subjected to humiliating hazing. The majority of hazing occurs during the initiations to club sports and fraternities/sororities.
