The services Head Start offer to children, “support the mental, social, and emotional development of children from birth to age five” (Office of Head Start). The type of services depend on the area that the center is established and the needs of the community. “Early Head Start services are provided for at least six hours per day, whereas Head Start preschool services may be half-day (four hours) or full-day” (Office of Head Start). Maloney shared that Shirley May’s Head Start preschool had always been half days to provide more children with the benefits of enrollment. The program has a bridge program that consist of teacher visiting the children’s home and talking with parents about nutrition, educational information, or possible services that might benefit the family. “Children and families who receive home-based services meet twice monthly with other enrolled families for a group learning experience facilitated by Head Start staff” (Office of Head Start). Maloney stated that the Shirley May Head Start center offers classes to parents over many subjects, such as child rearing, community services, job trainings, and free resources that they might find useful. Head Starts also offer financial counseling. The Kansas Early head Start program started a financial literacy project in 2012. This program utilizes the financial knowledge of local banks and their employees to teach parents about financial stability. “The ultimate goal of the project is to establish a statewide system for delivering evidence-based financial literacy programs to all Head Start programs in Kansas” (Kansas Head Start Association). Head Starts provides assistance to parents wanting to complete their own education. Parents can get assistance in to learn to read or learning to speak English. The program also helps parents who want to get their high school General Equivalency Diploma (GED). The staff at the Head Start also does referrals for family members that need assistance with medical, social welfare, or employment to community based specialist. Then the staff does follow ups to insure the family received the help they needed.
