The variables that I have chosen for my proposal are how confident male and females are in their ability to take good care of their health. The independent variable that I chose is whether the person is male or female and the dependent variable is how confident is their ability to take good care of their health. I selected these variables because it would be interesting to knowing how women and men go about taking care of themselves. My null hypothesis would be that gender does not matter when it comes to taking care of one’s self. One can simply just be confident that they are able to take good care of themselves.
Methods
For my hypothesis, I will try to prove that females may be more confident to be able to take good care of their

HINTS are the Health Information National Trends Survey a program that monitors changes on the field of health communications. They provide updates on changing patterns and information opportunities in health. The best thing is that they offer a great deal of surveys for researches to test new theories in health communications. By updating their surveys it makes the website credible and easier for people to use the information that they provide. While researching the HINTS website I saw that, “HINTS was developed by the Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB) of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) as an outcome of the National Cancer Institute's Extraordinary Opportunity in Cancer Communication.” It is their goal to keep updating their data so that people can, “refine their theories of health communication in the information age and to offer new and better recommendations for reducing the burden of cancer throughout the population.” Their data is also open to the public.” Hints data is also available for public and anyone who is needs their data done quickly. In the frequency table for HINTS it shows that 554 males took the survey and 946 females took the survey for a total of 1500 people. The confidence levels are rated from completely confident, very confident, somewhat confident, a little confident, not confident at all, refused to answer, and not at all
Oh Lord, help all of the black communities to fight back against poverty and give them strengths the disparities around of their communities. Martin Luther King offered his life and died for the cause of inequality, hoping that one day there would not be any discrimination, disparity, poverty and the segregation among the people of color. Nevertheless, people who lived in the black community receive less attention than the elites.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 1978), health can be defined not only in terms of absence of disease, injury or infirmity, but also, as a state of mental, physical and social well-being. Over the last decades, many studies have emphasized the role of social circumstances on health status. The tight link between health and a wide range of socioeconomic, environmental and demographics factors have been increasingly recognized and proffer an alternative perspective on how to consider public health, social justice and even restructuring of the health care system (Daniels et. al., 2004). The increasingly acknowledgement that health is also a result of cumulative experience of social conditions and exposure to environmental
Healthcare plays a crucial part in our lives. Health disparities “phrase references black-white differences as well health disadvantages characteristic of other ethnic groups “of color,” such as Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans” (Coreil, 2010 p. 167). Many socio-ecological factors that contribute to the existence of health disparities when it comes immunizations. An individual ability to have access to health care, insurance status, income level, provider and patient knowledge have a significant impact on vaccination rates.
Environmental Racism and Health Disparities are two of the many issues that affect the African American community. Environmental Racism occurs when people of color, who disproportionately live in lower income communities, are revealed to dangerous materials consisting of waste and toxins which are used or disposed of in their communities. Health Disparities occur when a group of people suffers inequalities of health advantages when compared to the access to quality health care and health advantages of another group besides the African Americans. Factors that contribute to issues of health disparities are the lack of health care coverage and vulnerability to toxins in the air. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity are common health disparities that deals with heart disease within the
Chapter one starts by telling the reader all the different kinds of health that we as humans experience. Ranging from physical health talking about the shape and size of the body to environmental health talking about the positive and negative impacts of where one might live. The chapter also expresses how if one chooses to start caring about their health it can lead to a longer, happier life. The choices people make when they are younger greatly impact their health later on in life.
The Southeast Asian American community faces many different health disparities. All the disparities this community faces can be directly attributed to their social barriers, language barriers, and socioeconomic status. Primary health disparities include the prevalence of Hepatitis B and liver cancer, cultural stereotypes that undermine health, and decreased health based on age. The stem of health disparities among Southeast Asian Americans could be explained by Hepatitis B.
The higher incidence of prostate cancer in African American/Black men compared to other racial/ethnic groups is a major health disparity. The statistics surrounding this health disparity are scary, with African American men having a prostate cancer mortality rate twice as high as whites and a prostate cancer incidence two-thirds higher (Modlin, 2012). The health disparity of African American men’s incidence of prostate cancer is a huge problem from a public health perspective because it makes African American men less productive, there are higher costs in the healthcare field than would be if the gap didn’t exist, and a loss of sense of control from African American men because of financial concerns/aftermath of treatment. One behavioral influence
In this chapter there are certain key points that can be distinguishable between gender and race in terms of health inequalities. This chapter has lots of comparisons made regarding gender between male and female, and race including aboriginals. The book demonstrated that research has shown that male and female differ in factors of health and their life expectancies. These studies indicate that men and woman go through different health illness and health risks. The same thing applies for aboriginals in Canada, but it is slightly lower due to their living conditions in poverty. The chapter also mentions socio-economic statues, which is basically the concept of the social class, it is mentioned
In “Prevention is Primary” (2010), health disparities are described as “conditions that are avoidable, unjust and unfair” (p. 36). The situation in Florida, with pain clinics on every corner of Broward County handing out prescriptions and/or dispensing copious amounts of extremely potent pain medications, is certainly avoidable. Today our national pain medication abuse has reached epidemic proportions forcing our president to declare a national emergency. As highlighted in the film, the OxyContin Express, anyone is susceptible to the lure of abusing prescription drugs. Todd, a younger, white male, had been abusing oxycontin for years despite the loss of both his brother and wife. The availability and sheer number of pills with little restrictions or regulations in place has brought unfavorable conditions to Florida that promote abuse (Foster, Tanner, & Van Zeller, 2009). The fact that anyone can walk into a clinic and purchase an MRI, have strong medications to regulate “pain” prescribed, and walk out with copious, deadly amounts of drugs speaks to the fact that anyone can and is impacted by health inequalities.
Sex and gender play a big part in american society today and are often misconstrued. These two topics have become progressive as people are starting to express their gender and sexuality in ways other than what is and has been considered the norm. Many people believe that sexuality and gender are synonymous with one another. Gender is socially constructed while sex is biologically determined. In society’s past, Americans often strayed away from discussing controversial topics, but with the rise of different ways of addressing people, it is deemed more important to understand. Along with the blurred lines of gender and sex comes sexuality, who someone is attracted to sexually. When people stray from society’s heteronormative mindset, they are often faced with many more challenges than the average hetero man or woman. People often have the preconceived notion that if something does not concern them, then they should not be involved in it. A person who could be your neighbor, co worker, or even child, may have to deal with the troubles of people confusing their gender identity with their sex. While also facing challenges that deal with the sex of the person they choose to love. Learning the difference between gender and sexuality will open the eyes of many people and see how the two are different but relate to one another very much.
This essay will discuss ways in which a person’s socioeconomic class and his/her social situation can have an impact on his/her health, using examples. We believe that there is a direct link between socioeconomic/social class and health (Adler et al. 1994). I will be defining the key terms: socioeconomic and health, social class then proceed to discuss about how poverty, income, employability, environment and housing can impact on a person’s social situation and their health.
It is often challenging to have health care services that meet the needs of Canada’s diverse population and the needs of both men and women. Gender influences access to care and women in particular are at risk for face difficulties to care (Ontario Women`s Health Equity Report, 2010 p.1). Women are more likely to be poor and have greater caregiver responsibilities in contrast to men. These both factors are barriers to accessing health services. The way the health care system is organized creates barriers to accessing effective care for women because it has failed to take into account that men and women use the health care system very differently. Canada’s health care system reinforces gender inequity rather than eliminating
According to McAllister (2006) food and drink “must be viewed as part of a broader social and cultural context” (p. 281) in order to understand the anthropological and sociological meanings of food and drink within society. This essay will apply an anthropological and sociological lens to explore the relationship between food, sex and gender. It utilises examples from anthropological and sociological literature to further explain the relationship between food, sex and gender. This essay will focus how food and can be a marker of identity, and how food and drink express gender roles.
"However, boys crawl away from their caretaker earlier than girls. Male infants startle more readily than female infants" (Eisenmen par 22).
The Vogue Magazine cover features Lea Michele wearing a pink tank top with a white miniskirt embroidered in colorful patterns. A celebrity is used to intrigue women into reading the magazine by surrounding Lea Michele in bold text that suggests tips on looking younger and healthy. Behind her is the text “Women’s Health” in bold, pink elegant letters. She is wearing a gold bracelet, a necklace, and a gold ring on her fourth finger of her left hand. Her face appears to be glowing as she grins towards the camera with her wavy hair flowing around her. The text surrounding her are in pink and black text in contrast to the white background. Above the magazine cover reads “Your Fast Track To A Flat Belly”.To the non-critical eye, it could be an informative magazine that gives woman an insight on taking care of their body and giving exercising tips. However, it could be implying that women should only look a certain way and should look more youthful to become more desirable.
