Current Issues in Informatics In health care, different types of data, information, and knowledge surround nurses. Nurses make clinical decisions based on the information they process and interpret. As a result, informatics influences the field of nursing in a multitude of ways. Furthermore, informatics paves a way for great change in health care, in which the nurse assumes a responsibility to implement and evaluate these technological advances. With many issues surrounding informatics in health care, the nursing student must identify what influences informatics has in nursing; what changes informatics has on health care and what role nursing plays in those changes; and what responsibility the nursing student has regarding informatics. Influence of Informatics in Nursing All nurses utilize information skills in their practice. The influence of informatics in the medical field has encouraged nurses to specialize in nursing informatics. Nursing informatics is “defined as the use of information and computer technology to support all aspects of nursing practice, including delivery of care, administration, education and research” (Hebda & Czar, 2013, p. 6). The area of nursing informatics focuses on developing and implementing solutions for the management of health information to better influence client care.
