When evacuating a health care facility, it is the job of healthcare staff to make sure the patients exit the building quickly and safely. In the event of an emergency, it is critical that patients and staff remain calm and courteous. There are stairs located in the waiting room as well as in the rear of the building. Patients should exit the nearest stairs available during an evacuation. Elevators are also located in the front and rear of the building, both next to the stairs. Patients and staff are discouraged from using elevators in the event of a fire. Patients who need assistance will be escorted out of the building first, followed by ambulatory patients. Ambulatory patients will be encouraged to help those who need help. There is a staff member assigned to assist each exam room and waiting room. Dr. Smith will be the last person out of the building and will clear all rooms, including restrooms and waiting areas, to make sure every patient has exited the building. Once downstairs and out of the building, staff members will gather all the patients from the clinic and wait for clearance to reenter the building. There are critical elements that should be included in any emergency plan. In response to a natural disaster (i.e. tornado), you should take shelter in the basement. If there isn’t one, then you should take shelter in an interior room on the lowest level and stay away from doors and windows. In response to a fire, you should call 911 and evacuate the building. If
