Tanya Waddell Sociology 120 Instructor: Amber Anderson December 21, 2013 Healthcare in the United States! Now that is a question for the ages. Is Healthcare a right or a privilege? Ask 10 people and you will get 10 different answers. Some say yes some say no, however almost all have caveats to their answers. This is where the dilemma starts. (Whitehouse.gov) Do we wonder how the relativist thinks of Healthcare? Do they believe it is a right or a privilege? The Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary Tenth Edition (1993) it defines relativism as; 1. A. a theory that knowledge is relative to the limited nature of the mind and the conditions of knowing. B: a view that ethical truths depend on the individuals and groups holding them. If a person thinks about this they will instantly know that a relativist believes that healthcare is a privilege. That no one has the right to have healthcare. It is an unpopular view point to take at this time in the United States. With healthcare being the largest battle being fought in the House and the Senate, with unemployment at an all-time high (no matter what the statistics in Washington are reading), and there being more people seeking healthcare than ever. As I stated previously I think that all people should be allowed access to Health Care and I do think it is a right as an individual. I do believe also that it should not just be free. I feel that all persons should have to pay something for the services and medication they receive. With the cost of medical care estimated to reach the trillions in the next decade we must do something to help to keep those costs down as low as possible.
