Health Concerns with Food
In today’s society, children are at higher risk for unhealthy food consumption. The increase in unhealthy food consumption has led children to become obese, and it has produced the need for parents and schools to add healthier options to our daily diets. Furthermore, the reason for childhood obesity is widely due to the lack of nutrition that children are getting. In addition to the lack of nutrition, children are also becoming obese because “children are consuming more calories than they burn” (Childhood Obesity: The Challenge). To stop this problem, we need to be cautious with the food we choose to give to children and even to us adults and only offer healthy options.

Parents offer the most control over the food we consume. Even certain parenting practices have affected the food we eat. The parenting style that needs to be used is authoritative this style of parenting is high on demandingness and responsiveness to their children which lets the child make choices but to a certain limit (The Role of Parents And Schools In Promoting Healthy Dietary Behaviors). This gives the parents ascendancy over what the child consumes. We should be opposed to any form of parenting that gives the option to the child to choose what they are going to eat. Even though authoritative parenting style may not work for everyone, it has shown to improve the health of children. It also helps when you go grocery shopping for food to make sure you have those healthy choices available and avoid the ones that are not. “Role modeling from parents involving children in shopping, while gardening also preparing and serving food, and providing only healthy options can help foster a positive attitude to healthy food.” (The Role of Parents And Schools In Promoting Healthy Dietary Behaviours). Repeated exposure to healthy food increases the chance of the children eating those foods. Again our parents are important role models when it comes to food because if when we notice them enjoying the food, we are more likely to eat the food that they are enjoying. Everyone absolutely adores the smell, taste, and the mere thought of when it comes to consuming food. In the United States, an abundance of food supply has affected and caused the increasing weight gain of all people, especially children leading to serious health and emotional problems today. The article “How America’s Children Packed on the Pounds,” by Jeffrey Kluger, gives insight to why this is a problem and the hasty need to be solved now for future generations.
Eating a well balanced meal is crucial for someone in their early childhood stage. During this time period, between the ages of two and six, a well-nourished child can grow up to three inches and gain up to four and a half pounds per year (Berger, 2010). Children at this age also need fewer calories per pound of body weight than infants do. Since children need less food than they did before and many do not diminish the intake of their food consumed, obesity becomes a problem. The article “Child and adolescent obesity: a part of a bigger picture” states, “The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity has risen substantially worldwide in less than one generation” (Lobstein, 2015). Obesity is a main factor that is present and can lead to other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. The article also states that, “The food industry has a special interest in targeting children. Not only can the companies influence children’s immediate dietary preferences, but they can also benefit from building taste preferences and brand loyalty early in life, which last into adulthood” (Lobstein, 2015). Once children are hooked on the foods they eat during their childhood, they tend to follow those habits as they grow up. Children in low-income families are vulnerable to obesity because they rely on cheap fast food.
Health issues like obesity are rampant due to low levels of nutrition in food served in public schools. Childhood obesity is a serious disaster in today's world as it is on the reverse spectrum of as eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa, but still carries with it serious health implications that can affect an individual throughout their lifetime. One specific factor playing a role in childhood obesity is the fact that the food eaten by children is not nutritious.
It is an established fact that childhood obesity in America is a developing disease that has become an epidemic with ongoing psychological effects, this is due to many reasons, among them are the wide spread of fast-food advertisements and bill boards, the lack of physical activities and parental control. This has made food become a major health issue in many young teenagers’ life today.
According to National Heart Lung and Blood institute, in America, 1 in 6 kids are obese. Although obesity might not seem that much of a big deal, it is. Childhood obesity can lead to much worse health problems later in adulthood, such as higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, and even cancer, among many chronic health issues all caused by obesity. Many kids get about half of their daily calories at school, and for some, school is where they get all of their daily calories. Since school plays such a big part in affecting the lives of many kids across America, special attention should be shown to nutrition. This can help kids with obesity, as well as kids that don’t have much food at home to eat and only rely on school food. For many poor kids, they don’t have a lot of healthy foods at home, because they can’t afford it. So, they rely on cheap school food for their vitamins and nutrients. Because cafeteria foods, like hamburgers or beef and cheese nachos, are highly processed and filled with unnecessary fat ,those kids that rely on school for food won’t get the nutrients and vitamins they need and will go home hungry. Since kids are growing up, it is especially important for them to get the right food they need to grow up healthy and strong, and in a place full of kids that are growing up, it is only right to provide them with good and healthy food that will allow the kids to grow up into healthy adults without obesity, malnourishment, or any kind of health
The obesity epidemic here in the United States affects a mass portion of all children and adolescents. The rapid growth in childhood obesity has become a prevalent health concern that is overlooked due to its’ normality. The main focus of this issue has always been fixated on how to help those facing current problems with obesity. Instead, attention needs to be brought to the prevention of our country’s #1 leading health concern, which has yet to be compromised. This ignorance has led millions of children ill-educated on the importance of lifestyle and the simple concept that “we are what we eat”. The reality of this issue is not one many want to take responsibility for, but the significant impact education has on what children consume is greater than we may think. The lack of effort in our education system and the simple changes in the education we provide can significantly help reduce the obesity crisis we face. Our education career is one of the most influential aspects of all of our lives and though most of children’s time is spent in school, it lacks teaching the importance of food, the consequences of unhealthy diets and its’ little value on health as being part of our future success.

In a recent news article, American Obesity Rates Are on the Rise, Maggie Fox states “about 28 percent of the people in America admits that they are obese.” The United States has become the country with the highest rate of obesity in the world. Besides adults who are obese, obesity is also a common issue to children and teenagers. Childhood is an important period when parents help their child avoid being obese. Eating habits during childhood can have an impact on a person as they age. Children in the U.S who are obese, will most likely develop a higher risk of having medical issue. According to the website, letsmove.gov, children who are obese, could cause to wide range of health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, high glucose levels, and more. Also, children who are obese at a young age, are likely to remain obese in adulthood. The establishment of the bill, H.R. 2627 Salad Bars in Schools Expansion Act, could reduce the percentage of obese children by providing salad bars during lunch times. This exposure to healthy eating habits can help children to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to avoid future health issues.

One out of three people in America suffer from obesity; they suffer from large amounts of fat stored and accumulated in their bodies causing them health issues such as gastritis, diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer. Unhealthy and harmful foods for our bodies are at every corner; ads for fast food are at every road, and TV commercials are full of delicious looking burgers being advertised on a daily basis. It is almost inevitable not to harm one’s body with this unhealthy food everywhere we turn. However, it might be easier not to consume these types of foods if living a healthy lifestyle started with children.
