Health education in Victoria is designed to aid young people in improving their own health, and the health of others (Wright, 2014). With such a broad goal, there is great emphasis placed on the teaching methods used to achieve this outcome. The approach for teaching health has changed substantially over time with new emerging ideas on what is the best way for students to view health. In fact, the latest modification to health education was introduced this year. Therefore, this paper’s intention is to illustrate the role of health education in society, how health education has been altered in the past, what the new curriculum involves and critique these changes by discussing the implications upon teaching and learning health.

In 1973, the Educational Department proposed six new areas that they wanted to incorporate into the curriculum: pre-driver education, international education, work experience, health education, community education and human problems. Included in the proposal was the recognition that teachers required more skill and knowledge to be able to teach these areas. This recognition comes as no surprise due to the lack of resources teachers supposedly had.

The mid-eighties saw the creation of the Personal Development Framework in Victorian schools. Six distinct areas were targeted to widen students health knowledge: Health education, traffic safety education, physical education, textiles and clothes, home economics and outdoor education (St. Leger, 2006). These areas still exist in the curriculum in contemporary times. The ever-changing role of health promotion has played a key role in the holistic approach that health education now takes (Leahy et al., 2016). New areas have developed and existing areas built upon, such as alcohol and other drugs, food and nutrition, health benefits of physical activity, mental health and wellbeing, relationships and sexuality and safety (VCAA, 2017).
