One of my main motivators is learning to believe and have faith in myself that anything is achievable if you work hard for it. For example, I embarked on the Masters’ degree in Health Informatics Administration (MHIA) program with no experience in the field and here I am close to the graduation day which would not have been possible without my self-belief and determination to succeed. Additionally, I received a lot of encouragement from my husband and mother to never give up in pursuing my dream; for the sky is my limit. According Bicak (2013), there are many factors that can affect the success of students in examination. These include the teacher, quality of teaching, methods of teaching, personal studying habits, motivation and test-taking anxiety. Although these factors can positively affect a student’s success in the exams, however, it is still necessary to use appropriate strategies and have a special preparation in the methods of responding to the exam questions to …show more content…
Most, in particular, the health informatics management system (HIMS) classes such as HIMS 661and the current HIMS 670 capstone class. Learning about the overview of the current and emerging health information systems and technologies especially the electronic health record system and data analytics in HIMS 661 has given me the confidence and determination to learn more about the proficiencies and competencies required of me as a future health informatics professionals. As someone with little knowledge and experience with health information management, I believe the knowledge I have acquired over the past 12 weeks in this class will accentuate my interest in pursuing a career in HIM. The information appeared well constructed and informative which in no doubt enhanced my knowledge about health information
The advent of the Electronic Health Record is ushering in a new era in advanced healthcare. The next 20 years will be an exciting time to be involved in health care as a Health Information Manager. Analyzing the myriad of health information which could reveal astonishing medical breakthroughs excites my imagination. I see the perfect pathway for my future. I am on track to graduate with Honors from Portland Community College’s Health Information Management Program in June 2016.
The potential for growth in the field of Health Information Management (HIM) is undeniable. With the diversification of the HIM profession, the implementation of new technology, and with an ever growing population, the HIM profession will undoubtedly continue to grow. The HIM professional is experiencing an expanded role in the development of standards on both the national and international levels (AHIMA, 2014). A key component of the HIM profession is the acquisition of new technology. As the current infrastructure of the hospital ages and becomes obsolete, HIM professionals must actively seek technology which is compatible with their organization’s current equipment but also able to support future equipment. Another cornerstone of
In light of the implementation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR), the traditional role of the Health Information Management professional is experiencing major transitions. The dynamic changes are affecting every aspect of the Health Information Management field with the greatest overhaul taking place in reporting methods. Amidst the change, the HIM professional must remain rooted in the quality standards of the department by ensuring “providers, healthcare organizations, and patients have access to the right health information when and where it is needed while maintain the highest standards of data integrity, confidentiality, and security.” Fortunately AHIMA is leading the profession by outlining the changes and offering tremendous support
It has only been within the last five years that health information management (HIM) has experienced exponential changes, due to the healthcare reform. The electronic health record (EHR) is connected to health information exchanges and other systems of interoperability. The timely completion of charts, coding and release of information (ROI) has become much more efficient with the electronic record. Traditional HIM functions will just be transformed and will always be an integral part of successful patient care. Professionals must be flexible and willing to adapt and even generate change. As Health Information Technology continues to evolve, so will the roles
Preparations for tests should ideally begin much earlier than shortly before the actual test taking period. Indeed, many students perform dismally in their tests because of their failure to understand this and many other principles of test and exam preparation. In addition to discussing how students should prepare for tests, this text will also identify the various strategies which should be embraced by students during test taking in an attempt to enhance performance.
My ultimate goal at the moment is to complete my Masters in Health Informatics Administration and sit for the RHIA exam in December prior to embarking on a new career in Informatics. Having worked in the healthcare industry for the past 12 years, I have some knowledge with electronic health records such as with Cerner Millenium and EPIC Portfolio and how they contribute to efficiency in clinical documentation in order to improve patients' care. As a current registered nurse, I use the EHR on a daily basis to document patients' health and physical assessment including medication administration. However, my ultimate plan eventually is to leave bedside nursing entirely once I am able to secure a job position in either health or nursing informatics.
Frighten by the information I received, I almost made the biggest mistake of my life by leaving. At the end of the session, a woman stood before us and changed my life from that point on. On that day, I was introduced to the Clinical Health Informatics
In a time of constant changes in regulations and continuous technology advancements, the Health Information Management professional must adapt to meet changing industry demands as it becomes more dependent on electronic Health Information Technology (HIT) to process and manage health information. The HIM professional’s job traditionally
The Intro to Health Informatics course has provided a broad range of health information that introduces the core concepts in the biomedical community. Throughout this course, my learning experience in health informatics has advance, for I was able to learn a list of materials including: the relationship of biomedical informatics and its related field; the roles of informatics in decision support systems and related health IT applications; and the importance of biomedicine and the use of biomedical information. In the Biomedical Informatics (4th edition) text book, it reflects the outstanding changes in both computing and health care that continues to occur. These changes have set a high rate of interest in the roles that health IT must play in the health care.
Many people are not aware of what professionals are responsible for in the fields of Management Information Systems and Health Care Information Systems or what well-paying jobs are available in those fields. Some people know a small of information about them but do nor do they understand why someone would want to major in these fields. This information obtained research of these fields will help the reader become more familiar help you become more familiar with what they are, what they do, the career choices they can provide, and how these fields is very dominate in today’s job market.
While being a Health Informatics and Information technology student at Community College of Baltimore County, not only I was able to start my career as a billing coordinator at Johns Hopkins University’s Pathology Department but also continued to fulfil my dream of completing my education. I have a very strong understanding of computer system while expressed keen interest in learning about various diseases and diagnosis. With immense gratitude, I give credit of my success to this wonderful program offered at CCBC campus that allowed me to expand my horizons by learning in depth about healthcare and healthcare delivery system. Starting a career in such big organization, without any prior experience within healthcare industry makes me feel
I became interested in the informatics field through my experience as an informatics epidemiologist at the Houston Health Department. I started this job in January 2015 without any prior experience in informatics; I had to teach myself about health terminologies such as HL7, LOINC, and SNOMED, and learn the health department’s electronic disease surveillance system with little training. Based on the job’s annual performance evaluation criteria, I was required to write at least two research abstracts, lead several informatics projects, and produce monthly analytical reports. Driven to succeed in my role and knowing that my master’s in public health (MPH) had limited informatics training, I decided to enroll in SBMI’s certificate program to expand my knowledge and skills in informatics.
The profession of health informatics is a relatively new one, blending the use of technologies with collecting, organizing, storing, using, and evaluating health information.
First off, who I am as a learner has changed over the past years. At times before, I wouldn’t take certain classes or assignments seriously and have learned my lessons when I failed. I believe having classmates at the time who weren’t as focused as I wanted to be, played a big role in my lack of understanding in classes. I understood later that if I felt learning was so important to me, I need to realize that it is my future and I needed to focus on my own. Having learner in my top 5 strengths defines me very well. Rath (2007) explains that, “The process, more than the content or the result, is especially exciting for you” (p.133). I believe this defines me as a learner because I enjoy having books in hand, opening up my notebook to write notes and learning new ways to understand the class. Regardless if the content is something I have to get in to or if I don’t do well on tests, I enjoy the process of studying and learning more even when I know I didn’t do so well; that is what motivates me. I believe as long as I keep this mindset and understand that this is my strength, I will continue to grow and further my education as much as possible. Even though I have failed a few of my last classes, I never let that stop me from continuing. Knowing that I have “failed” makes me realize I know I can do better and I try my hardest not to let it get me down. I will not get further if I don’t keep trying and as a learner I am a motivator to myself in my studies.
For students, it is impossible to pass the examination only by cramming, which urges the learning ability to a certain extent; meanwhile, the teachers are also required to strengthen contact with students in the ordinary teaching, fully understand the students' learning condition and make an equal record and evaluation.
