I really enjoyed reading your post. This is a good example of how poor health literacy can have a detrimental effect on a patient’s health. In a journal article the authors stated that health literacy is a strong predictor of a person’s health status (Schwatz et al., 2013). As seen in the AMA video and in the example that given here, it is clear that health literacy has a direct effect on one’s ability to make important healthcare decisions. Your example also reminds me that fear may play a big role in health literacy and one’s ability to make healthcare decisions. Making healthcare decision for yourself at time can be a daunting task no matter the culture, level or education, of background. It is so important that providers consider
Looking ahead into the coming century and seeing that life is becoming only more complex and busier, the program attempts to make its plans as easy as possible and to customize them to people's lives. To that end, it presents tools and calculators to help their clients keep their health on track, as well as personalized health sites and personal assessments to help people know where they stand in terms of their health (http://www.uhc.com/health_and_wellness.htm). United Health Care realizes that people spend much of their time on eh Internet and some
In 2010, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services crafted the nation’s 10 year health agenda. Healthy People 2020 outlines key objectives aimed at improving the standard of care health consumers receive by improving both the quality and format of health information offered to consumers as well as improving the consumers’ ability to obtain and process that information. These objectives included supporting shared decision-making between patients and providers, increasing health literacy skills, and delivering accurate, accessible, and usable health information that is targeted or tailored to the individual. Health literacy has been demarcated as the measurement of the individual’s capacity to obtain, understand and process simple health information. It is needed to make satisfactory health decisions and determine services needed to treat or prevent illness. Health literacy requires knowledge from many topics, comprising the patient’s own body, appropriate conducts towards healthy results and the difficulties to understand the health system. It is influenced by many conditions such as our communication skills, age, socio-economic status, and cultural background, past experiences, educational level and mental health status (U.S. Department of
While exploring the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) website I was able to find items that can relate to my capstone project. The HHS had a webpage under a tab called program and services. Under that tab, I was to locate information about nutrition & fitness. Items that relate to my project since it’s about health promotion and promotion positive health behaviors. The HHS has information about the basics of healthy eating, the lasts dietary guideline and physical fitness information. One thing that I found interesting on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality AHRQ website was information about pharmacy health literacy center program. I believe that this program is important because patient education is important in

In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be

Health literacy refers to an individual's ability to obtain, process, and comprehend health-related information and services to make informed decisions that can improve their overall quality of life. The content of this pamphlet is very strong from a health standpoint and also from a reading standpoint. It is easy to follow, but not childish in nature. There are simple, practical tips that can be followed, and there is enough content to feel as though something was learned. Still, it is very easy to get through and there is not so much content that one feels he or she has to read a lot to get the information. That is the mark of a high-quality pamphlet that can really help people with their health.
The concept of health literacy was first originated in early years and it was recognised as an autonomous research field in 1990s (Andrew pleasant and Shyama Kuruvilla, 2008). The
This paper explores several articles; studies, programs and campaigns that report on results conducted both online and offline, in relation to health communication, specifically in minority populations and the aging in America. The paper also introduces subset definitions within health communication itself, and how each piece of that communication is affected by several limitations within the aging and minority populations. From what has been seen in recent trends, health literacy and adherence levels are poorest amongst seniors and minority populations. According to Andrulis and Brach, of the nearly 60 million of American adults with limited health literacy, almost 32 million are Non-White and/or Hispanic (2007, p. S122). The CDC (Centers for Disease and Prevention Control), Healthy People 2020, and Health.gov offer several recommendations to tackle this issue that not only affects health statuses because of the miscommunication, but drives up health care costs as well. This paper will break down the various components of health communication, address the issues it has for “special populations” in the United States, offer solutions based off of proven methods to increase awareness, point out limitations of studies and programs and a future study.
Health literacy is both a consumer and public healthcare issue. As a health care provider, it is not only my responsibility to ensure that you understand your health and what is going on

Throughout this complete health assessment, I will approach my patient, a 49 years old, female, married patient, and perform a head to toe examination. Starting with the gathering of information, I will start with biographic data, reason for seeking care, present illness, past health history, family history, functional assessment, perception of health, head to toe examination, and baseline measurements. The subjective data will be collected first, where the patient will provide necessary information about every organ system for further examination while the objective data will be amassed in every system based on my findings. This assignment serves as an opportunity to establish a nurse-client interpersonal relationship that
