Health Literacy resides beneath the umbrella of social determinants; aptitude in this form of literacy is a determinant of wellbeing, and influences vulnerabilities and capacities towards disease formation and prevention (Reading & Wien, 2009). Historically, health literacy had a subservient role in condition-focused care, and possessed an approach that lacked partnership, capacity building and thus empowerment. The significance of the relatively new and evolving concept was unveiled due to implications of suboptimal levels, and addressed through accessible education within the realms of nursing/medicine and primary/community healthcare (Egbert & Nanna, 2009). Health literacy is not disconnected from literacy, and as such can be identified as a sub-group, which necessitates four domains inclusive of fundamental, scientific, community and cultural (Vass, Mitchell, & Dhurrkay, 2011). Health literacy has numerous definitions, however, can be defined as ‘the degree in which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions’ (Parnell, 2010). Health literacy proficiency dictates the ability to navigate the healthcare system, read/comprehend medication labels/health-related terminologies, and understand language conveyed by healthcare professionals (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). There are correlations between low literacy skills and inadequate health literacy due to reading barriers – which is indicative of the need for basic literacy skills (functional) to build upon foundations through scaffolding, an educational teaching form (Department of Education & Training, 2014).
