I really enjoyed reading your post. This is a good example of how poor health literacy can have a detrimental effect on a patient’s health. In a journal article the authors stated that health literacy is a strong predictor of a person’s health status (Schwatz et al., 2013). As seen in the AMA video and in the example that given here, it is clear that health literacy has a direct effect on one’s ability to make important healthcare decisions. Your example also reminds me that fear may play a big role in health literacy and one’s ability to make healthcare decisions. Making healthcare decision for yourself at time can be a daunting task no matter the culture, level or education, of background. It is so important that providers consider

Human beings are social creatures, therefore have an innate desire to be accepted as part of a group, which delivers a sense of safety and security. Once accepted into established groups, intimidation can sway individual attitudes and behavior towards conforming to group norms, resulting in discouraged creativity, and decisions void of critical thinking. Because team-based structures are popular in today’s companies, it is important for managers to understand how to avoid conformity pitfalls. When utilizing team leadership theory, managers can mitigate negative consequences that group conformity instigates, by offering a leadership style that facilitates team member autonomy, creativity, healthy debate, and openness to new ideas.

When one thinks of Vincent Van Gogh, they may not initially think of his multiple health issues. Moreover, their thoughts will progress the multitude of artworks he produced during his lifetime. They will be more excited to speak of his impact on impressionism which had a substantial impact on the world of art. Along with the other impressionist greats such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Leonardo Da Vinci, Edouard Manet etc. What is little known is that how troubled he was during his lifetime and how he experienced a tumultuous series of ‘attacks” and depression. This troubled time in his life ranged from 1880, when he was institutionalized at Arles to the time of his unfortunate death on July 29, 1890. What is still left to be answered is did his multiple addictions improve the quality of his art or was he suffering from something else that drove him insane and contributed to the great prowess of his artwork?
