In addition to the chronic condition the children also require a higher level health related services than those that are normally needed by children who do not have chronic conditions (Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs [AMCHP], 2014). The U.S Department of Health and Human Services states that dental or oral health is one of the major contributors towards overall health for a population as well as for an individual (HSS, 2010). Noted as the main point of entry into the body, the mouth is under continuous attack by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi (NIDCR, 2014). This vulnerable population of CYSHCN are at an increased risk for oral disease, and in a recent national survey, children with a chronic condition birth to age 18 represented approximately 15 percent of the entire child population in the United States (AMCHP, 2014). Relevance to Public Health The category of oral health in Healthy People 2020’s goal is to “prevent and control oral and craniofacial diseases, conditions, and injuries, and improve access to preventive services and dental care (Healthy People, 2010)”.
