One of the larger health problems faced by the United States is the amount of people afflicted with heart disease and stroke. Heart disease and stroke are at the top of the list for diseases with the highest number of deaths per year across the nation; with heart disease being the leading cause of death for Americans. The populations with the highest rates of death from heart disease are non-hispanic black as well as white individuals. And while the risk of death from stroke is lower than that of heart disease, stroke is considered the third highest killer within the country with non-hispanic blacks also holding the highest rates of patients dying from the condition. The leading causes of heart disease and stroke are high blood pressure and high cholesterol; with factors like poor diets, smoking, lack of adequate physical activity, and being overweight and obese exacerbating these causes and heightening the risk in developing heart disease. Stroke and heart disease are typically considered together due to their diagnostic features being related. In both stroke and heart disease patients, their causes typically have to do with damage done to blood vessels of arteries in the body (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 2015a; National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 2015b; H., 2012).
