Health Promotion for Age-Related Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common health challenges world-wide, especially in older adults. In this paper, I am going to delve into how health promotion can be a significant factor in reducing the risks of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the aforementioned demographic. Through academic research and resources, in my first paragraph I will be providing the definition of Health Promotion and its importance for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. My second paragraph will be discussing the pathophysiology to aid in the comprehension of how this health challenge is present in the body, along with patient responses and complications. Lastly, I will be touching on health promotion interventions, which will also be incorporated with specific ideas and information to aid individuals in promoting health and preventing development and/or advancement of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

According to Rural Health Information Hub (2017), the fundamental purpose of disease prevention is to keep individuals healthy. One implements health promotion interventions in an effort to promote healthy behaviors and to decrease the risks of developing chronic illnesses (RHIH, 2017). According to the ADA (2016) individuals that participate in health promotion behaviors are more likely to have better health outcomes compared to those who do not. The EBP change project has shown that educating patients with prediabetes can increase diabetes knowledge and promote an increase in health promotion behaviors. The EBP change project outcome has indicated that participants who completed the 6-week diabetes education program were able to increase their knowledge regarding type 2 diabetes. Therefore, with the positive outcome of the EBP change project, the EBP change project site can incorporate certain aspects of the diabetes education program into their patient education to increase diabetes knowledge, picking healthier food options and participants in activities that would increase physical fitness.

This project will focus on changing lifestyle behaviors and providing up to date education for the patient to make the best informed decision regarding her environment, health behaviors, and developing a support system with her primary care physician.
