Being healthy can be defined as the relative state where a person is able to function well physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually in order to express their unique potentialities within the environment they are living (Health 2017). This paper will outline an interview and health promotion plan for L. Brown. The paper will detail the interview, describe Brown’s health issue, and outline her assessment using Gordon’s Health Functional patterns. Next the paper will summarize Brown’s assessment and prioritize the concerns relatives to her health. Brown lacks a positive image of her body and does not feel good about her physical state. She does not possess good self-esteem and is often depressed. Brown does experience periodic states of positive self-worth followed by longer periods of doubt. She says she feels like she is in a vicious cycle.
Role-relationship pattern. Brown has good relationships with her children / grandchildren and is often called upon to babysit and provide daycare. Her middle daughter and family live with her providing her joy and happiness.
Sexuality and reproduction. Since the death of her husband 8 years ago, Brown has not been in a physical relationship. She states she has no interest in “dating” or engaging in sexual activity and is content to let things be.
Coping-stress tolerance pattern. Brown states she uses prayer as a means of alleviating stress. She also states she eats as a way of rewarding herself and feeling better. Brown, being healthy needs to include a state of mind and physical well-being. Years of neglect have taken their toll on her body, resulting in obesity and chronic issues such as hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. The health assessment of Brown details long standing depression coupled with morbid obesity as a result of poor eating choices and a lack of exercise. More compelling was the rationale behind her choices and her inability to move on from the passing of her late husband. The health promotion plan includes an emphasis on addressing Browns highest concern of major depression followed by morbid obesity. The goal of Brown’s health promotion plan will be her ability move on from the past, get hold of her depression and make better life choices.
