Being healthy can be defined as the relative state where a person is able to function well physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually in order to express their unique potentialities within the environment they are living (Health 2017). This paper will outline an interview and health promotion plan for L. Brown. The paper will detail the interview, describe Brown’s health issue, and outline her assessment using Gordon’s Health Functional patterns. Brown lacks a positive image of her body and does not feel good about her physical state. She does not possess good self-esteem and is often depressed. Brown does experience periodic states of positive self-worth followed by longer periods of doubt. She says she feels like she is in a vicious cycle.
Role-relationship pattern. Brown has good relationships with her children / grandchildren and is often called upon to babysit and provide daycare. Her middle daughter and family live with her providing her joy and happiness.
Sexuality and reproduction. Since the death of her husband 8 years ago, Brown has not been in a physical relationship. She states she has no interest in “dating” or engaging in sexual activity and is content to let things be.
Coping-stress tolerance pattern. Brown states she uses prayer as a means of alleviating stress. She also states she eats as a way of rewarding herself and feeling better. Brown states she is passive aggressive and will, on occasion, use her tendencies to create divides in family relationships she is in disagreement

Brown, being healthy needs to include a state of mind and physical well-being. Years of neglect have taken their toll on her body, resulting in obesity and chronic issues such as hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. The health assessment of Brown details long standing depression coupled with morbid obesity as a result of poor eating choices and a lack of exercise. More compelling was the rationale behind her choices and her inability to move on from the passing of her late husband. The health promotion plan includes an emphasis on addressing Browns highest concern of major depression followed by morbid obesity. The goal of Brown’s health promotion plan will be her ability move on from the past, get hold of her depression and make better life choices. Health promotion includes providing activities that improve a person’s health. These activities assist patients to “maintain or enhance their present levels of health. Health promotion activities motivate people to act positively to reach more stable levels of health” (Potter & Perry, 2005, p. 97). For individuals to be healthy requires the combination of varying levels of physical, mental and social well-being throughout a person's lifetime. Most people find that maintaining their health requires a certain amount of effort and intention. Health programs can help with this effort, but their effectiveness depends on how well health professionals make sure that an individual's attention and information convert to actions and behaviors that succeed (Issel, 2009).
She allows herself to believe all she is told. She also allows herself to believe that being treated as she is is going to make her better, when in fact it is only making her worse. Her being sent up in a room, like a penitentiary will add loneliness to her illness. Her being told not to write or not to go and see family and friends, again, adds to her loneliness. She is separated from society. Therefore, she feels as though she is alone in society. She gives into the fact that the male-dominated society would rather her alone, than be with lots of women and cause chaos. She gives into everything the world wants instead of listening to her inner self. She ignores herself, causing her to act out in madness. When one does not listen to one's inner self, he or she is then turning away from his or her conscience. It's like the "devil and angel" episode that has been seen in numerous cartoons. If the person listens to the little devil, it will end up being the wrong decision. It the person listens to the little angel, it will be the right decision. The narrator listens to almost neither. She allows what is happening to happen and does nothing but sit back. This would cause anger inside anyone.

I took this opportunity to understand my unhealthy habits and transform my behavior. In my Wellness Recovery Action Plan, the information brought light to the obstacles and how to overcome issues. After filling out the Schedule of Recent Experience (Wieitan et al., 2009) and Tactics for Coping with Stress (Weitian et al., 2009), it was a shock how much I put my body through. A finalized copy of my results can be observed in Appendix A, and the results of the Schedule of Recent Experience (Weitian et al., 2009) can be viewed in Appendix B. In the outcome, I conducted coping mechanisms such as therapy, exercise, and nutrition. Nutrition has been a challenge as a waitress and full-time student. I am always around food at work that led to overeating.

For this health promotion assignment, the subject I have chosen to discuss is sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). STIs are spread from one person to another through intimate sexual contact but can also spread through non-sexual means such as via the blood or from mother to child during pregnancy (World health organisation (WHO), 2016). According to Mudhar (2013) groups that are particularly at a higher risk are young adults, men who have sex with men (MSM), black African and Caribbean communities. The elderly have multiple health problems and struggle to stay healthy and able to care for their own needs. The elderly in the rural areas tend to have a number of needs that may be compounded because of their choice of dwellings. The rural person may need to seek health care in different nearby cities, or may find some health care providers in their own local communities. Many elderly or older adults would benefit from a health promotion plan that would focus on the needs of this age group. The World Heath Organization defines health as being a state of wholeness in a person’s mental, physical, and social well being (Gurung, 2014). Different models of health are used worldwide to assist in achieving this state. Two widely used models of health in the United States include the biomedical model of health and the biopsychosocial model of health. They both strive to help individuals and communities achieve wholeness, while approaching this in different manners. Each model of health has strengths, drawbacks, and practical uses in the field of medicine.
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being.
