Health psychology, anther division inside of the American Psychological Association, or APA, is a “specialty applying psychological principles to the scientific study of health, illness, and health-related behaviors.” Empirically based, or in other words “vast in growing research literature is the outcome of scientific methods” (Jones & Bartlett, n.d)“Health psychology focuses on how biological, social and psychological factors influence health and illness. Health psychologists study how patients handle illness, why some people don’t follow medical advice and the most effective ways to control pain or change poor health habits. They also develop health care strategies that foster emotional and physical wellbeing” (
American Psychological Association, 2007). The field of health psychology is closely related to the many realms of health care, such as the bodily functions and their causes and effects or chain reaction of events. “Health psychology formally began in the 1970s when the behavioral sciences began to contribute more to the understanding of health problems” (Schwartz & Weiss, 1977). Health psychology knowledge can include multiple fields such as “psychological, social, and cultural influences on diagnoses, treatment, and rehabilitation of ill and injured people” (Jones & Bartlett, n.d.).
