We will be examining substance abuse among adolescents in Orange County (OC) and assessing the contributing factors and different interventions currently offered. Adolescent substance abuse is difficult to identify because, unlike diseases, there are generally no physical manifestations. Therefore, proper education and resources geared towards at-risk adolescents must effectively address the underlying contributors of substance abuse. National statistics generally suggest that poverty is directly related to substance abuse. However, Courtney Perkes, a writer for the Orange County Register, notes that wealth is associated with substance abuse among teens, especially those living “in south Orange County and
When I started applying to colleges, one of the things I searched for was a good nursing program. Being a registered nurse has always been my passion because I believe that I possess the skill set for this career, and with the right credentials I'll be able to pursue nursing. Whenever I try to explore other careers, I find myself coming back to nursing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides information on the job description, job outlook, and median pay of registered nursing.
Money and outlook- “Overall, job opportunities for registered nurses are expected to be good. However, the supply of new nurses entering the labor market has increased in recent years. This increase has resulted in competition for jobs in some areas of the country. Generally, registered nurses with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) will have better job prospects than those without one. Employers also may prefer candidates who have some related work experience”. “The median annual wage for registered nurses was $67,490 in May 2015. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,360, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $101,630”.-(www.bls.gov). There are a lot of people trying to become a registered nurse but, just becoming a registered nurse won’t get you as much money as getting your BMS and working with the government. A registered nurse can get up to $101,630 a year depending on how far you got into your education. For example getting your BMS can help a lot.

Nurse practitioners, or NPs, primarily work in a specific specialty of care. Their training involves about six years of schooling, or master’s degree in nursing. Through not as highly trained as doctors, NPs have more responsibilities than registered nurses. Nurse practitioners assess, diagnose and treat patients. They also educate patients on staying healthy and maintaining a plan to recover from injuries, as well as advising them on things like child or nutrition, depending on their specialty. The job outlook for nurse practitioners is very good, and, on average, NPs earn about $82,590 a year, according to StateUniversity.com (Amanda Williams, EHow Contributor). My Occupational Nursing Job is Registered Nurse. Registered nurses(RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and their family
Nurses have great income. “Average Registered Nurse salaries for job postings nationwide are 7% higher than average salaries for all job postings nationwide.” (“Nurse Journal” 10). There are many opportunities for advancement as well. The longer you work for one specific place the more likely you are to be promoted and potentially be given raises. “The top 10 percent in the field earn over $94,000. Generally, these professionals have many years of experience, and usually have their master’s degree in nursing.” (“Nurse Journal” 10). This will give you a decent amount of pay as you begin nursing, and even more the longer you are a nurse.
There are a few general types of nurses- a certified nurse assistant (CNA), a licensed practical/vocational nurse (LP/VN), a registered nurse (RN), and a nurse practitioner (NP). All are important to the healthcare industry but, all have very distinctive attributes. A certified nurse assistant generally takes two years at a community college and you need to complete a certification exam. This is the lowest nursing qualification you can receive and a lot of small offices, like Dr. Lustig’s pediatric office, will hire them “We used to have registered nurses here but, found that they often left to go work in the hospital almost as soon as they were trained” (Lustig 2016). Medical assistants make an average between twenty-thousand to thirsty-thousand dollars a year. Becoming a licensed practical/vocational nurse will take about two years but, there are some training programs that are doable in one year. The annual salary is about forty-three-thousand five-hundred dollars, which isn’t bad at all. A registered nurse which is the most common, involves four years in an undergraduate bachelor’s program and completion of the licensing exam. After you do this you can make your way to earning about sixty-five-thousand to seventy-five-thousand dollars a year. Lastly, a nurse practitioner whom earns the same if not more than a RN,
Heartland Career Center offers a Health Science Education program (HSE) taught by Brandi Pennington. The students have this class five days a week and approximately three hours per day. While in this class the students have clinicals which take place in surrounding nursing homes, and the second year students are able to do internships. The class also goes to elementary schools to do height/weight and vision screenings for the community. In this class the students are able to receive dual credit at Ivy Tech and could get a CNA license/certificate by the end of the year.
Three health problems that are affecting the community are diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and asthma. Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the pancreas. It is the body’s inability to produce insulin. During the past five years, diabetes is up on the rise. The disease is becoming an epidemic (Bingham, 2016). About 18 million people died from the disease annually. People are becoming increasingly overweight and obese. It has been argued that it is close to two billion people around the world who are over weight and over 300 million obese. It is estimated that over 2 hundred million people between ages 40 to 59 years old are diagnosed with diabetes and that number expected to increase to over 3 hundred million by 2025 (Bingham, 2016). Diabetes is one of the major health problem that is affecting the community I live.
A nurse’s job is not only to help cure the illness of a patient, but to also help the patient emotionally. The two countries that I have chosen to compare to the United States are Germany and Canada, because I believe that they represent the two avenues that the United States may go down in the next ten to twenty years. There are two kinds of accessibility: the ability to afford needed treatment, and the ability to actually receive that treatment in a timely manner. The two can blend together or be distinct. For instance, in America, many individuals cannot afford acute care, but they nevertheless can go to any emergency room and be treated. But the inability to pay for chronic care can be, in many cases, an absolute bar to securing that care. In Canada and in Germany, accessibility in the “ability to afford” sense is far
